Free Music Review: Better than God
Hit: 5 Stars

Every 5 star review of this album's got it right, it's a masterpiece. Everything good has all been said before, but yesterday as i was getting ready for another long day of work, i had this album playing and providence started to pick up its pace and i turned up the stereo really really loud. The drums came in, simply amazing, and i couldn't help but do a sort of vibrating dancing thing, tears dripped down my face, it was the greatest spiritual trance i've ever experienced. GYBE truely know what they are doing, and in the best kind of way. I wish I was in a band like this, it would be my religion, i would cry in joy at every show, the music is so powerful. Check it out! (btw, this album is my favorite of all GYBE's stuff, but all of their songs are worth owning.)

Free Music Review: Not For Beginners
Hit: 3 Stars

Warning. Do not drop acid to this music unless you are a trained, experienced shaman. This music definitely not for beginners. It will take you places whether you like it or not and a lot of them, while interesting, sound like places I'd never want to be. The "black" in their name undoubtedly refers to their mood, as none of what is on this album sounds anything like what we typically recognize as African influenced. It's tempting for me to assume that Umma Gumma was GYBE's favorite Pink Floyd album but I wouldn't be surprised if they'd never heard it when they made this record. While definitely influenced by the band, I doubt they'd have risked being called "copycats" by being intentionally as similar in style and approach. It will be interesting to see whether they develop some pop sensibilities down the road or rather stick with these dark, amorphous swirlings that are actually better suited for the cinema than the home stereo. This album has drawn a lot of acclaim in independent and underground circles since its release. One reason is probably that it appears to actually be a singular, cohesive body of work, like an opera. Perhaps this one tells the story of mankind's post-apocalyptic evolution. Scary.

Free Music Review: ~Haunting~
Hit: 5 Stars

Godspeed You Black Emperor!. Incredible? Visionary? Artistic? Pretentious? Of course. Thank the heavens for this group of unbelievable musicians. I have never experienced, and I can bet that most of the people reading this review will fall into the same category, anything like this before. Is it music? I can say without reservation that indeed it is one of the finest compositions that I have ever listened to. East Hastings is a phenomenal piece of "song-writing." Richly textured, terrifying and unbelievably intricate (without actually being pretentious), f#a# (infinity symbol) is a masterpiece of emotion, exploratory musical arrangements, haunting spoken-word pieces, and industrial noise. With only three songs (epic each in their own right) it may seem a strange purchase to the casual music fan, but you must put faith in the fact that you will NEVER hear anyone like GYBE! (or GY!BE as they are now known) anywhere else. While centered around the premise of the end of the world, the musical compositions that layer this CD still bring the listener a ray of hope -- a lacuna of optimism and despair that leaves you quivering. HIGHLY recommended -- A MUST BUY!

Free Music Review: Go Canada Go
Hit: 5 Stars

If you haven't heard of Godspeed You Black Emporer, that's okay, because a lot of people haven't. But don't make the mistake of judging this by the weird band title, or weird album title. Actually, in a way it fits the music perfectly, because this is a beauty not easily described or captured. You must have some patience, but not much, because the first track will grab you and hold you until the last throbs of sonic texture fade out on Providence, the climactic third and final track. With street preachers screaming about the end of the world and such, one would get the impression that these guys are entrenched in depression, but the beauty of the guitar solos and stretched out rhythms shows that they understand the essence joi-de-vivre: hitting that special place during the crescendos that only a long, slow buildup can bring you to, and cannot be simply achieved with a catchy guitar riff in a 2 1/2 minute song. The only other type of music which can do this is classical, you know, with the orchestra and stuff.
People have tried to mix classical and rock music for decades, and the result is usually a blatant compromise between the two styles, leaning more in one direction. Godspeed is different. They create, on this three song masterpiece, what I would picture grandchildren listening to in the year 2100 and wondering why nobody composes music with such beauty and grace anymore, much like classical buffs do today. Buy this and you WILL be thankful.

Free Music Review: This is it
Hit: 5 Stars

Three tracks totalling over an hour is just the first sign that you're headed towards something big. Big doesn't even describe what this album is. Enormous, epic and prodigious might be better descriptions of this album, but they still can't quite adequately portray what f#a# has in store for you.

Please please get this album. Don't just listen to it, immerse yourself in it. Shut off the lights and the telephone and let the the music take you to a place you probably wouldn't really like to see in real life. The songs are incredibly dark, and very draining to listen to. But its worth it, if you can invest the time commitment. Don't cut this album short by just listening to one track. You must experience the entire 3 songs to get the full effect of that this album has to offer.
