Free Music Notes for Good Morning RevivalFree Music Review: Good Charlotte, Great Charlotte or the Greatest Charlotte? Hit: 4 Stars
I may be in the minority but I was actually a huge fan of The Chronicles of Life and Death album. I have both of GC's first two albums but they really didn't stick with me. I'm 23 and they weren't the first pop-punk band I had heard so I liked GC but also saw them as Blink-182 knock off #23751. I liked their work in a "background music" kind of way, but the only song of The Young and the Hopeless I loved is My Bloody Valentine.
It was when TCOL&D hit that I really appreciated this band, because they took a risk in toying with evolving their sound after having such a hit record, and sounded a heck of a lot better and more memorable then their previous work. They tried to move away from the pop punk stigma and it worked for me.
I understand that TCOL&D had split fans 50/50, so with Good Morning Revival I was hoping they wouldn't revert to their old sound just to please people. I'm happy that they didn't.
With Good Morning Revival, Good Charlotte has kind of evolved into dance rock band. It's got a lot of 80's influence and that works. It's a CD you can throw on and just enjoy. It reminds me slightly of bands like Franz Ferdinand and Shiny Toy Guns, while still having that Good Charlotte sound. GC works really well with this sound and having listened to this CD about ten times already I can say that even my least favorite song on the album, "All Black" is catchy enough that I don't skip it, and I can't call any song on the album flat out bad.
The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it's not as epic and not quite as ballsy as The Chronicles of Life and Death. But with more albums like this I can see Good Charlotte continuing to maintain and gain fans, and stay in the upper-echelon of the pop-rock scene.
Free Music Review: Decent music, bad lyrics Hit: 4 Stars
Good Charlotte waited so long to come up with this album, I can say I was pretty curious about it. Well, it's here now and I admit I bought it the first day it came out, after listening to previews of the songs. My first impression was that every song is pretty catchy and has a good 80's sound to it. The style is radically different from the pop/punk of the previous albums , they now have turned to techno/rock. While the music is good, I have a little trouble with the lyrics of most songs. They are extremely shallow and it sounds like the Maddens wrote them in a week. The rimes are weak and the themes are pretty uninteresting. So I basically try not to focus on the lyrics and I just listen to the songs as a whole background music. There is no way I am going to be moved by any of these songs "Her daddy's a lawyer, mine's not around, she has good manners, I'm rough all around". I will give this album 4 stars because it is addictive enough for me to play it every two days in my car. If you're looking for light and very upbeat music, this album is for you. If you're looking for good content and lyrics, you will be disappointed and frustrated. If you're looking for punk: wrong band.
Favorite songs: Misery, Broken Hearts Parade, Keep your hands off my girl
Skipped tracks: March on, Where would we be (gasps)
Free Music Review: Good Offerings Hit: 4 Stars
I've read some of the other reviews of the album and I have to confess that I've never listened to any other Good Charlotte albums and that may account for my difference of opinion.
I think the album is very good! There are a couple songs on it that just miss. To me, Something Else and Dance Floor Anthem are rather poor. But I would say 7 tracks are very good. The remaining 4 are ok. My favorite track is Misery, the second track, which emerges out of the weak intro track with a simple, but powerful drum/guitar combination.
If you came to the table expecting big things from the album based on their prior work, it seems like people have generally been disappointed. I listened with some new ears and found myself enjoying most of the album. It'll definitely be one I listen to regularly.
My bottom line? If you've got extra cash to spend, buy it. If cash is a little tight, it's not great enough to pick-up.
Free Music Review: Hard to get use to!!!! Hit: 4 Stars
I heard an import copy in a Japanese CD Shop. I must admit I expected more. I am more of a fan of their style when they made the first two albums. There is considerable growth displayed by the band members in this cd. But if you are an old school GC Fan then you mostly will have issues adapting to their new sound. I give them credit for being brave enough to venture from their successful formula on the first 3 albums that brought them into the light. Now we shall see if they lead the groups like them (Sum 41, Simple Plan, etc.) into a new age of punk/pop or if artists like fall out boy have taken the lead and GC heads down a road on its own.
Free Music Review: People are just impossible to please. Hit: 4 Stars
I don't even really listen to Good Charlotte (their style isnt my cup of tea) but I figured I would give this album a shot since I liked their single The River.....and I was right to take that shot. The first 7 songs on this album are solid...lyrics are nothing to right home about, but they get the job done...the music is definitely a step up from their previous efforts....I really dont know what people expect anymore....I think they expect too much, especially from bands like Good Charlotte.
