Free Music Review: They may be young, but they shouldn't be hopeless!
Hit: 5 Stars

I would say this cd is majorly kick .... Their last cd was superb, and is difficult to top, however. The first track is just some music entitled "A New Beginning". Fitting, is it not? Its kool to hear them just playing, and not singing. It's something differen that I haven't noticed many bands exhibit. One of the unique factors that is Good Charlotte.

The second track is "The Anthem". This song is probably the one I've heard the most, seeing as how I wanna have all of them memorized before the concert on November 9th. I'm starting at the beginning. This song is definitely awesome. They lyrics that make it up are just great. "Do you really wanna be just like them? Do you really wanna be another trend?" Just great... its a kick ... song.

Which leads me to the 3rd track. "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous." I'm sure every GC fan out there has heard this track. Now, I have to be honest. At first I didn't really like it. It sounded much more produced than any of their old stuff. It didn't sound like what I was used to. However, change isn't always a bad song. While the video is awesome, I would say this is definitely not their best song. Not bad, but not their best. (they have no bad songs XP)

The 4th track is "Wondering." I've also been memorizing this song. So I've listened to it a lot as well. Its definitely got a very odd rhythym to it. But its unique. Thats actually the best word to describe this album. Its different from the usual sing-songy stuff. And you just have to love it.

The 5th track is "The Story of My Old Man." Yet another mockery of fatherhood. It's a good song. Kind of presents both sides of the case. Shows the life after leaving. Reasons for leaving. Its a good song. Definitely worth listening to time and time again. Aftre tat we find "Girls & Boys" which I'd say is one of my favorites. It's completely stereotypical and untrue in my life, but its funny, and its cute. It made me laugh, and honestly, this how society can be perceived. As stereotypical, and superficial. And It's like a mirror to some people's lives and priorities. Gotta love mocking those people. ^_^

Which brings me to the 7th track "My Bloody Valentine". This is one special song. Through the whole song you wonder what exactly happened to him. And then at the end the irony of the situation is revealed. It's completely kool. This song is kind of like something you'd find in a movie. Its a mini story. Another one of my favorites.

After that we move on to the next page and track number 8 entitled "Hold On". This is a very mellow song. We saw a few songs relatively close to this one on the last album (like seasons or changes, but this song is a tad slower than that). Its nice that not every song they sing would fit into the 'punk' catagory (whatever that is these days.. -_-) And its good that they have range. I really admire them for being able to explore other genres. As for the song, its good. Its the type of song that could inspire people, and put hope into their hearts in cases of depression. I know I'll be listening to this song a lot.

Next is "riot girl". This is another funny one. It's a good song. Not one of my favorites. I dont really like songs that have people's names in them. I don't know why, I just don't. This song has "Christina" in it. Other than that its an awesome song. As are the rest.

After that we have "say anything". This song isn't a bad song. It's relatively slow, like hold on. It shows separation, and moving apart. This is a dillemma my friend has been dealing with lately, and it realtes to my life. I like it a lot for that, because I can relate to it. I also like it because it has a nice rhythym, and it once again reminds me of their old album. :) Next is "The Day that I Die". This reminds me of some of my poems. Also reminds me of a new found glory song, and another song (I forget who by). Its a kool song. Not the niest message, but it shows a nice passing. Its not bloody and gory. I like it a lot.

Now we go onto the next page of songs and find the title track "The Young and the Hopeless". This is at the top of my list. Great song, and awesome choice for the title track. Its quick, and it reminds me of their old sound. Its new, and spunky, but has old reminders. ITs hard to top this one. :)

Then is "Emotionless". I had heard this song before the release of the cd. Another slow song. But I like it a lot none the less. Its a kick ... song. The whole message of the song is great, and fits in tune with the general idea. Great song.

The last track on the cd is "Movin' On". Sad to see it end :'(. But hey, all good things come to an end, hey? This is a song most people can relate to. Whats gonna happen to me in the future? How will I be living, if I'll be living at all. Its a good song to have the last track. And an awesome song in general.

For the cd on a whole, it is EXTREMELY good. The last cd was a 10, this cd is a 9.9 repeated. Its great. They expose a new sound, as well as the elements from their past that made them as great of a band as they are. I would really reccommend this album, whether or not you liked their old stuff. Because its different, its new, and then again its not. Theres something for everyone, great messages in the songs. You can relate to it, you can laugh at stupid people *LOL* and you can totally see how kool the band really is. GO GOOD CHARLOTTE!!

Free Music Review: Good Charlotte's The Young and The Hopeless
Hit: 5 Stars

There is this huge controversy going around whether GC is punk or pop. Or even either. Well--news to everyone, they don't care. Neither should you. Judge a band by their music, not if they fit into the genre of music you want them to. If you are a fan of: Sum 41, Simple Plan, Mest, or Goldfinger you should try this cd. Any current, old, or new GC fans: first of all, check out their first (self-titled) CD. Others to try: Mest (new CD coming out 6/10 feat. Benji Madden on "Jaded"), Goldfinger, Taking Back Sunday, Simple Plan, Sum 41, The Juliana Theory, or New Found Glory. I won't sapp up this review with how great this CD is... but it's one of the best of my collection. A great variety of really good songs. If you don't like them... don't bother arguing about how they're not punk. Or pop. Or emo. Or whatever you call them... just appreciate them for what they are: a band from maryland that started from complete scratch and managed to make their way all the way here, all on their own, with criticism all the way. So: the songs. Here's a quick run-through:
1. A New Beginning: an interesting beginning to the record--a short, catchy intro that sets the mood for the rest of the CD.
2. The Anthem: The second radio single. I hate how the radio ruins these but... once you get by this... it lives up to its name, an "anthem" for all those shunned and left out... as its lyrics say, "another loser anthem."
3. Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous: practically ruined and poisoned by being overplayed way too much on the radio. This was a great song until the pop-world caught on, and all those teenies out there were buying GC's cd just for lifestyles. Well, there's more to GC than that... but this is still a pretty good song, despite the fact that it's SO overplayed.
4. Wondering: very catchy, great for a first-listen. The rumor is that benji wrote it originally about his legendary dog, Cassius Clay ("Cash") but it's a sweet song with a punk twist.
5. The Story of My Old Man: a pretty good one about the twins' father who left them when they needed him most. It's a good song, as always, but not the best... these first five songs aren't the greatest to get a sample of (i know on amazon they only let you sample the first five), but they will begin to give you an idea...
6. Girls & Boys: One of my favorites, upbeat, and fun. This was just released on the radio... i'm wincing to see what the overplay will do to it... i'm hoping it'll stay pure. A great, fun song about, well... girls and boys.
7. My Bloody Valentine: a song that really grew on me. At first listen, it's kind of disturbing... a rather upbeat song that is describing some other things, apparently based on edgar allen poe's the Telltale Heart. This is a really original song.
8. Hold On: the best song on the album. It's written about suicide... "hold on/if you feel like letting go/it gets better than you know" and its really for anyone who sits in their room wondering why they are there... well... hold on. its a really emotional song that can help you if youre in the depths of despair or if you are just along for the music.
9. Riot Girl: an uplifting, great song about a punk-rock chick basically. a fun song to just rock out to...
10. Say Anything:another favorite, good for friends in a rocky place in their relationship... could be a love song, for friends, for anything... another good song.
11. The Day That I Die: an ironic sort of song... it's upbeat and happy sounding, but the lyrics: "i swear the happiest day of my life/is the day that i died" its a good song, another uplifting one (which isn't really implied by its title).
12. The Young and Hopeless: i'd have to say this one could be my favorite. Depending on the mood, it competes with Hold On. It's basically about all of us teens, we're young, and we're hopeless in everyone else's eyes. But it's about accepting that fact with style! Yeah, we're hopeless but we're young and we're living life to the fullest!
13. Emotionless-great lyrics, about the twins' dad and how he left them... they are healing and getting over it. A good song to listen to, even if you choose to ignore the lyrics.
14. Movin' On: a great song! Perfect end to the record. It does what the name suggests... after wrapping up all the emotions that were touched upon in the whole CD, it basically leaves you with hope, that you're moving on. It ends with the wise words: "This ain't dyin', this is livin!"
Ok enough with listening to me. If you don't like Good Charlotte, then you don't like them. That's that! But if you do, this is a great CD. If you're a new GC fan: buy this CD first. It's got a great variation of songs, and every one of them is worth listening to. If you're a returning GC fan: I highly recommend their first CD... a fun mix of rockin out tunes for the gc fan. So to end this: in the end, a great CD. It surpasses boundaries set for pop, punk, emo, ska, rock, alternative, whatever the hell you want to call it. A good addition to your collection--you will enjoy it. peace.

The Young and the Hopeless Review by Chelsea Ciufo

Being a long-time Good Charlotte fan, I anxiously counted down the days until their new CD The Young and the Hopeless came out. There was a month left to wait, a week, a day, and then finally it was October 1st. All through school I squirmed and fidgeted, not paying attention to anything. Glancing up at the clock I was disappointed to find out that only 2 minutes had passed since the last time I glanced up.
"Is something wrong, Chelsea?" my 4th period teacher asked with a quizzical look on her face.
"Uh... no, I'm fine." But I continued squirming.
Finally, the final bell of the day rang. Thank God. I raced out of class, only to remember I had to wait for my best friend to come out. She understood what was on my mind, though, as all best friends do. She laughed and we quickly through our books into our lockers and bolted out of the school in record time. I said goodbye, and raced to my moms car. She greeted me with a smile.
"Lets go buy that CD." She said and shifted the car into gear and off we drove to [the store].
Finally we arrived at the store and I saw a girl in a Good Charlotte t-shirt leaving the store, furiously tearing at the annoying plastic covering that covered her new CD. I just had to get mine. Less than a minute later I breathed a sigh of relief as I held my prize in my hands. For a brief moment I was worried that they had sold out, or this store didn't carry Good Charlotte cd's. But, realizing that it was going to be located under the `new releases' section, I was happy again. I had gotten many odd looks by bolting to where the cd's were located, but I didn't care. It was worth it. I ran back to my mom and walked alongside her next to the cart. I couldn't take my eyes off the cd... it was beautiful. But finally, I managed to tear myself away from it and pay for it. My mom, to torment my I'm sure, made me carry all the bags back to the car. Being the multitalented person I am, I managed to carry 6 bags and unwrap the cd at the same time. Thank you, thank you very much.
Without hesitation I popped it into the cars cd player, cranked the bass and volume, and we were rocking. The first time I listened to the cd, I just soaked everything in. I belted out Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, and sat quietly listening to the rest of the tracks. I was in heaven. I smiled the whole time I listened to it.
Out of the car I ran up to my room and stuck the cd in my stereo. Would you believe that I played the whole album 5 times in a row? I loved it. Every minute of it, I love. Even today, a couple weeks after I bought it, it isn't unusual to find me listening to it over and over again.
I guess I should actually write some reviews huh? I just want to say that I love all the songs.
1. Intro- A nice intro, showing off all of the talent in the guitars, basses and drums. It all ties together nicely. It kind of sounds like something from Titanic mixed with a kind of Harry Potter sound. But, I like it.
2. The Anthem- It says it all, "Don't wanna be just like you" very true
3. Lifestyles Of The Rich And Famous- The first single off the cd, it's really catchy, kind of poppy and it'll get stuck in your head.
4. Wondering- A nice love song
5. My Old Man- I like how it goes from fast paced to slower. I like the line "Last I heard he was at the bar, doin' his own thing, I know I got that same disease I guess I got that from him". About... their dad.
6. Boys And Girls- This was the first song on the cd that was my favorite. It's changed now, but I still like it. It shows just how shallow girls can be.
7. Bloody Valentine- A song that you can't really picture them doing what they are singing about, but I really like how it's put together. It gets stuck in my head and it makes me feel good. Not in a violent, killing way, but it's kind of soothing in a twisted way.
8. Hold On- Tells everyone to hold on and everything is going to be okay.
9. Riot Girl- Sing about their `girl'. She's got tattoos and piercings, she also likes Minor Threat and Social Distortion.
10. Say Anything- This song they sing about they're in a fight with a girl and they just want her to say something to make the awkward silence go away.
11. Day That I Die- The day that I die will be the best day, according to them.
12. The Young And The Hopeless- They're not young and hopeless, well, not hopeless.
13. Emotionless- I really, really, REALLY like this song. I can't relate to it, but on a bad day I'll listen to it, and it'll make me cry.
14. Moving On- A nice outro.

Free Music Review: Good Charlotte proves itself not Hopeless with new album
Hit: 5 Stars

Eclectic. Life changing. The best album of 2002? That's what the boys of Good Charlotte have to say about their second release, "The Young and the Hopeless." And you know what? They aren't that far from the truth. Give me your Eminems, your Bruce Springsteens and your Justin Timberlakes, and I'll show you the true number one album of the year.

The year 2002 has been filled with a variety of chart toppers. Rappers, pop stars and even old-timers like Springsteen have shared the top of the charts this year. However, all it takes is this pop/punk CD.

Long awaited by their fans, "The Young and the Hopeless" picks up in a big way where Good Charlotte left off with their 2000 self-titled debut. This CD is a must-have for any fan of punk or rock music. Admirably referred to as "The Twins," brothers Benji and Joel Madden once again take the role of the lyric writers for this album.

One major difference for this album is in the drum position. When former drummer Aaron Escolopio left the group just before the 2001 Warped Tour to join Wakefield (his brother's group), Good Charlotte was forced to look for a replacement. As of press time, however, a permanent replacement has yet to be named.

Good Charlotte experimented with several drummers this year. While Dusty from Jesus Eater, New Found Glory's Cyrus Bolooki and Autopilot Off's Phil Robinson played dates with the band this summer, it was The Vandal's Josh Freese who got the gig for the album.

Straight out of the box, you are hit with the unique guitar intro, "A New Beginning." But, the second song on the album is one of my favorites. The transitions from verse to chorus on "The Anthem" are exceptional and are guaranteed to get nearly any listener interested. Another thing I especially enjoy on this track are the convincingly dominant chords of bassist Paul Thomas. The next track, "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," is the debut single/video from the album. This upbeat yet harshly realistic track takes some stiff jabs at some prominent people. One of the more harsh jabs is at former NFL player O.J. Simpson when singer Joel states, "Did you know that when you're famous you can kill your wife/ and there is no such thing as 25 to life/As long as you got the cash to pay for Cochran." Other than that, this new TRL mainstay is full of pop/punk that thankfully is not your everyday Blink 182/Fenix TX sound.

While the entire CD is very diverse in the pop/punk styles, it's the realism of the lyrics that catches your attention. With this disc, Benji and Joel defiantly join a short list of extremely talented writers in the industry. Along with Dashboard Confessional's Chris Carraba and Eminem, Benji and Joel's real life experiences push them to write lyrics that are not recycled garbage. This can be seen the most on "The Story of my Old Man." Although Eminem has been complaining about the ill-hearted father he never knew on discs since 1999, "the twins" tell a different tale about their relationship with their father. They sing about growing up looking up to their father and how he always portrayed himself to them as a loving father until he promptly walked out on them when they were young teens. "Emotionless" also delves into the rage that "the twins" hold against their father for deserting them.

The next extreme dose of realism comes on the emo/punk-esque "Bloody Valentine." This song is about how a relationship can cloud one's mind and confuse even the extremely strong-minded.

Benji takes over on the lyrical front and joins Joel for the darkly melodic "The Day That I Die." This song will hit home with people who have felt depression. I would compare this track to the Blink 182 hit, "Adam's Song." Though the song takes you to a deep, dark place, Benji and Joel make you feel that it's all about trying your hardest and doing your best in the time that you have.

The title track, "The Young and the Hopeless," once again portrays the emotions of anger and the unknown. In my mind, this is the breakout track for guitarist Billy Martin as he hits you from both sides with his energetic style.

To sum it all up, this is the most concise album you will ever hear. All 14 tracks will hit hard with melodies, rock and punk like you've never heard before. The live stage show only adds to the power of Good Charlotte's studio recordings. The outrageous and hyper antics of Thomas is reason enough to see the group live. Finally, a CD that will overpower the weak attempts of some of Good Charlotte's inadequate pop/punk competition. Good Charlotte proves once and for all on this CD that they never will be just another track act.

Free Music Review: Great!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

This is one the best releases for 2002. They (the radio stations) are playing stuff off of here a lot and that's good and bad. I'll get to that after I review the album.

1. A New Beginning - a cool little instrumental, nothing really all that extrodinary here though 7/10
2. The Anthem - an excellent song that I know what they are talking about; it's basically ignoring all the negative BS that goes on at school and just being yourself; i like it, it gives the stupid preppy school cliques the finger and says f-you in so many ways without saying it(Joel and Benji are good people unlike me and don't curse in their music) 10/10
3. Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous - you've probably heard it on the radio, it's about how rich people are always moaning about something and how there life should really be like an average person's 9/10
4. Wondering - it's basically describes a relationship with a person and joel basically says what he'll do to keep the relationship alive i also heard that's it's about cashdogg their dog, cool pet name 8/10
5. The Story of My Old Man - this is a masterpiece both lyrically and muscially (nothing to hard to play though) it's just that type of song that the words go great with the music; it tells you about joel's and benji's dad (they are twins by the way) that left them; to me this is written almost on the level of an Everclear song 10/10
6. Boys and Girls - again, another brilliant song, however to me the music wasn't written as well (it has a weird techno feel to it), but the lyrics make up for that and then some; this describes your typical jock/cheerleader relationship 10/10
7. My Bloody Valentine - a complicated song that most people won't get about you having to kill another person that loves the same person you do to get that person; I or Good Charlotte are not suggesting that you go out and kill someone; this is where you have to look at this as just a song, it's still good though 9/10
8. Hold On - a great song that tells you that they (Good Charlotte) had to go through the same ... day after day that me an you have to go through day after day at school 9/10
9. Riot Girl - it's o.k. i guess it's the albums only song that doesn't really fit in, but for Joel it might be about the person he loves so it depends on who you are 7/10
10. Say Anything - I can relate to this because I liked a girl that was everything I wanted in a friend in middle school and now she goes to a different high school and it ..., if I ever see her agian this is exactly how i will feel 10/10
11. The Day That I Die - Joel and Benji both sing in this one; its basically talking about being sick and tired of living and then killing themselves and wondering if they lived their lives how they should have; remember that Good Charlotte does not want you to kill yourselves or do anything stupid because if one of their fans died from a song that they wrote they could not live with them selves; if you know blink 182's adam's song, this is kinda a downbeat version of that 8/10
12. The Young and Hopeless - this is great song that reminds me alot of blink 182's anthem part 2 without all the cursing 10/10
13. Emotionless - Benji sings this one it's soft, but very powerful just listen and you'll find out thankfully I can't relate to it 10/10
14. Movin On - this is by far my favorite on this whole album, they close the album with a kick ...track that brings knowing God and the meaning of life together all into one.
In summary, get off your ..., get some money and go get this album.

Now I'm going to explain why all this media coverage hurts the image of great bands like Good Charlotte, Blink 182, and Sum 41. I just want to put it blountly that Good Carlottle is a kick a** anti-prep band and the bad thing is that half of the so-called fans are preps. If they hear something that appeals to their taste on mtv just because it sounds good that pisses me off because they will have no idea what the music stands for. I hate mtv, the only thing that I watch is The Osbourne's because I'm also a huge Ozzy fan (how I like Good Charlotte and Ozzy, only the good Lord knows). Most the people watch The Osbourne's to make fun of Ozzy which I would love to strangle the filthy idiots. Now Joel and Benji are on all things rock which plays a bunch of generic rock music. I do feel sorry for them having to be on mtv because they are going to get percieved now as what they aren't, they're punk and will always be until they decide they want to change. That's about it for now. ROCK ON GOOD CHARLOTTE!!!!!!!
