Free Music Notes for The Young and the Hopeless

Free Music Review: Brilliant!
Hit: 5 Stars

Ok, so the only types of music I can name are rock, country and classical. Keep in mind that the music I generally enjoy is usually stuff like Eric Clapton and Norah Jones. I heard this CD because my kids were playing it and I was stunned. This is fantastic - musically and lyrically. Intelligent songs with something to say (and they say it so well) that rock your heart and soul. I rarely get tired of listening to it - each track is different although their style is maintained throughout. If I didn't see it classified under "punk" here at Amazon I would have called it just some powerful, poetic rock with an edge. I guess I would call it rock with a punk edge. The drums are incredible and whenever we play it in the car I tell my daughter "if you practice your drums, maybe someday you'll sound as good as Good Charlotte".
The CD could easily stand alone musically but what really makes it rise above the ordinary is the lyrics. I would not call it at all commercial - just sincere and moving (Emotionless, Hold On), brilliant (Lifestyles of the rich & famous), poetic (The Day That I Die), edgy (My Bloody Valentine) and intelligent (all of it). I'll also add inspiring (The Anthem), witty (Girls & Boys) and fun (Riot Girl). Add to that the excellent messages they send (Hold On, The Story of My Old Man, Anthem, Movin On) and I don't know how you could ask for more. Vocals are perfectly suited to the songs and the emotion they project makes them a joy to listen to. The fact that you can understand what they are saying is what drew me in at the start but WHAT they are actually saying is what made me love this CD. These guys are talented poets as well as musicians.
If there are other groups (punk or otherwise) that have something better to say in a better way with a better sound I'd be anxious to know about them.
I don't know if it's to their credit that they have blown away a 46 year old mother of three or not, all I can say is this is beautiful music. I think it is a classic CD that everyone, no matter what their musical tastes are, should own.

Free Music Review: "Still Young, Not Quite Hopeless"
Hit: 5 Stars

"Keep representing GC, because you know were representing you!" -Benji (GC)...
And they are... no worries here; the boys of Good Charlotte have their feet on the ground and their heads where they belong. For all the Good Charlotte fans out there who didn't think the boys could pull it off or were worried they might forget the hard core fans who have been there since the beginning, this reviews for you! On October 1st 2002, Good Charlotte dropped their sophomore album "The Young and the Hopeless" and this time instead of a tiny splash in the music world, they made a wave! Breaking the dreaded "Sophomore slump" many bands have fallen under. From the 80's inspired track "Boys and Girls" to the hard heating "Bloody Valentine" GC proves that they have what it takes to keep you coming back for more. "The Young and the Hopeless" which is similar to their first album, (the self titled "Good Charlotte" which dropped in 2000) the boys: Billy, Paul, Joel and Benji capture the amazing energy they give off at live shows, and showcase their musical talent with hard hitting lyrics and a new amazingly powerful sound. "The Young and the Hopeless" talks about personal opinion (the song "Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous" which criticizes everyone from OJ Simpson to the D.C. mayor) and even more personal experiences (their song "Emotionless" deals with the twins (Benji and Joel) forgiving their father for leaving them and their family and letting go). Since the bands beginnings almost 6 years ago, in a small town in Maryland, Good Charlotte has had to deal with changing drummers, hard edged critics, and hard core fans concerned with the danger of the boys "selling-out", all of which helped to fuel this album. The group may have had to grow up, but they haven't had to change their sound, just make it better! For all you GC fans out there who were worried that the guys might sink back into obscurity, sellout, or forget where they came from, take a deep breath. This album proves that the boys of Good Charlotte are still here and by the sound of it... they aren't going anywhere!

Free Music Review: So Good... I Couldn't Stop Listening
Hit: 5 Stars

This was an amazing CD!! I didn't fall in love the first time I listened, but by the second and third times, I was hooked. There are no songs on here that deserve less than 5 stars. So what if they're overplayed?? Does that make them any less good? No! Definitly not! Some of the best songs on here are the ones that you haven't heard on the radio, and they are the reason to buy this. I won't say much about each song, since other people already have, but I have to say something.

-A New Beginning- An awesome instrumental. A great beginning to the CD.
-The Anthem- It's overplayed, but it's still a great song. I love the chrous, but the whole song is great.
-Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous- Also overplayed, but that's because it's good. Very catchy.
-Wondering- One of my favorite songs on the CD. It's fun, but also meaningful.
-The Story of My Old Man- Great, very catchy. I had this stuck in my head for days, which is a good thing!
-Girls and Boys- Pretty good. Not one of my favorites, but still lots of fun to listen to. The chorus is catchy.
-My Bloody Valentine- When I realized what they were saying in the lyrics, it kind of grossed me out, but it couldn't make me like this song any less. I just try to ignore what they say ;)
-Hold On- A powerful song that made me want to cry. This was great to listen to when I was feeling down.
-Riot Girl- I really liked this when I first listened to it, but now I'm kind of tired of it. It's still great though.
-Say Anything- The chorus is really the only part of this song that I like, but that's ok.
-The Day That I Die- Fun to listen to, even though the lyrics are kind of, um, upsetting. Catchy.
-The Young and Hopeless- One of my favorite songs on the CD. Totally thrilling, great lyrics, very, very good.
-Emotionless- Probably the least memorable song the CD. I don't even remeber how it goes until I listen to it. But when I do, it's ok.
-Movin On- A great ending for the CD. Catchy and lots of fun. It made me jump up and down.

There you go. Hope it helps.

Free Music Review: This album is great!
Hit: 5 Stars

First, let me ask a few questions to the people who wrote the latest negative reviews: Since when are you a teenybopper just because you call them GC? Also, why do you only talk about the fact that they're not punk, and say nothing about their music but just give them one star? Anyway, I'm going to rate all of the songs and give an explanation.

A New Beginning: 9/10 A good intro, although sometimes I'm a bit inclined to just skip it.
The Anthem: 9/10 The Anthem is what Little Things was for the previous album. It deals with all the troubles at high school.
Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous: 9/10 This is simply a punk song about rich and famous people, and what sucks about them.
Wondering: 9/10 Although I doubt that this song, as said in another review, is about Benji's dog, it's still a very good one. Woof!(Edit: after reading the lyrics once again I suddenly also feel that this is about a dog! :D)
The Story of my Old Man: 10/10 One of my favorites, a fast song about the twin's father that left them on christmas eve.
Girls and Boys: 9/10 Great song about materialism and shallowness.
Bloody Valentine: 9/10 The lyrics sound a bit freaky, but it seems to be about crazy love.
Hold On: 10/10 This one is about suicide. The twins felt they had to do this since they lost quite some friends to suicide, and they've done it very well. The lyrics are great, and this is definitely one of their best songs.
Riot Girl: 9/10 Simply a very fast and cool punk song.
Say Anything: 9/10 Can't be sure, but I think this is a love song. Good lyrics, quite catchy too.
The Day That I Die: 9/10 A sort of light-hearted song about death.
The Young and the Hopeless: 10/10 One of the best songs, that resembles Festival Song from the older album.
Emotionless: 8/10 Lots of people consider this song the best, but for some reason it never really grew on me as much as the other songs on the album.
Moving On: 10/10 A great way to end the album. Fast, catchy, and good lyrics, awesome song.

Free Music Review: Great Charlotte
Hit: 5 Stars

I noticed a few reviews that referred to this band as "posers." Maybe if understood what the word means I could apply it to this band. It seems to refer to their not being "punk" enough. Being a long-ago Ramones fan, I refuse to put this band up against them and judge them in that fashion. Who can compare to the Ramones??? Give me a break. I will agree that this band looks more punk than they sound but that should not cause you to automatically dismiss them as "posers." LISTEN to the music and judge it on how it makes you feel, because, to me, that's what music is all about! Does the band believe in what they are singing? Does that feeling come across to the listener? In my humble opinion.... YES!!!!!
I have just recently began delving into the "new" music which I gave up on long ago as self-serving whiners from the suburbs acting like life sucked and we should all die because it was so pointless. It was very depressing and monotonous and caused my attitude about anything "new" to plummet.
Then I recently got turned on to the "new" punk. I love it! It has given music a new life, I think. And bands like Good Charlotte are the reason why. You can't call them "punk" because they do other styles of music too. It's not just two minutes of raw pounding that the Ramones made famous, so in that sense maybe they are posers! If so, give me poser bands any day!!!!
I just recently purchased this CD and was totally blown away by it's diversity and sincerity, and I don't blow away easily. There isn't a weak song in the bunch. It's a CD you just put in and walk away. From the driving punk slash of "Riot Girl" to the pathos-packed heartbreak of "Emotionless" and everything in-between, you will be hard-pressed to find a better CD on the market today.
I eagerly await the arrival of their first CD which I have ordered from here but haven't received yet.
POSE ON BOYS!!!!! I'll be there to cheer you on!!!!!
