Free Music Notes for Gordon Lightfoot - Complete Greatest HitsFree Music Review: Gordon Lightfoot: Complete Greatest Hits Hit: 5 Stars
This CD is the best single disc collection of Gordon Lightfoot's greatest hits. All 20 songs are written by Lightfoot. Some of his earlier ones like "Early Morning Rain", "For Lovin' Me", and "Cotton Jenny" were made famous by Peter, Paul, & Mary and Anne Murray. In 1971, he began topping the Billboard charts. All of those songs are here including "If You Could Read My Mind", "Beautiful", "Sundown" which reached # 1 on the pop charts, "Carefree Highway", "Rainy Day People", "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" one of my all time favorites and a lyrical masterpiece (that probably only Lightfoot could have performed), "Race Among the Ruins", "The Circle is Small, and "Baby Step Back". A true fan might better enjoy the multi-disc collection "Songbook" but that costs $60 and this CD is only $14 so it is well worth the price. If you grew up in the 1970's as I did, and you like Gordon Lightfoot, this CD is a must. It is very highly recommended.
Free Music Review: Gordon Lightfoot "Complete Greatest Hits" - "Contains 20 Ultimate Classics" = An Excellent Compilation CD!!!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
This is the "Ultimate Greatest Hits" CD from Gordon Lightfoot. You get all his classic hits, and more, all on one CD, plus you get a track by track history of every song included. This informaion includes the details of the "Wreak of the Edmund Fitzgerald" that happened in Lake Superior, on October 10, 1975. Gordon gives a very good tribute to this ship and 29 crew members who died, in his hit song "The Wreak of the Edmund Fitzgerald", which is included in this CD.
Other top 10 Smash hits include:
Sundown
If You Could Read my Mind
Carefree Highway
Gordon Lightfoot is from Ontario, Canada. I consider him to be the "King of Great Lakes Folk Rock".
This is "Ultimate" CD to have by Gordon Lightfoot. It's all very good smooth music, full of great stories. Gordon tells excellent stories through his songs. Thanks!!!
Free Music Review: Wonderful songwriting makes for a brilliant compilation Hit: 5 Stars
It's difficult to say much that hasn't been said before, and likely said better, by many other reviewers. So I guess I'll just add another voice to those who have mentioned the beauty of the songs in this compilation, and their timelessness.
While a certain track about a ship is the one that my parents played endlessly while I was growing up, my personal favorite track is "If you could read my mind," which I believe is one of the most beautiful and sad songs ever written. Lyrics that touch the heart, sung over spare but perfectly used guitar, ultimately building to an almost heartbreaking finale.
I've always thought, as a Canadian, that Lightfoot was one of our more underappreciated musical contributors. So it's gratifying to read so many wonderful reviews of his work on here, from those who appreciate his artistry.
Free Music Review: Great soulful music created by a master musician Hit: 5 Stars
Born in Canada in 1938, Gordon Lightfoot's rich baritone voice accompanied by his excellent acoustical guitar work has made him a favorite for more than 40 years. In 2002, this Complete Greatest Hits album came out to rave reviews. It contains many of his most-well knows songs, including If You Could Read My Mind Love, Rainy Day People, and his smash-hit The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Overall, I think that this album has a great sound. Each of the songs sounds clear and excellent to me, and I love leaving it playing for hours on end as I slave away at my desk. I really enjoy all of the songs, but especially love Canadian Railroad Trilogy (which I don't think I have ever heard before) and Beautiful.
So, if you like great, soulful music, created by a master musician, then get this album. I highly recommend it!
Free Music Review: Excellent collection of best songs Hit: 5 Stars
Gordon Lightfoot had some great records back in the '70s and had such brilliant songcraft on all his songs. Sometimes, he and his band had some funky grooves and beats, especially on Sundown. If You Could Read My Mind is very revealing song wise. Carefree Highway is still astounding. But one standout is The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald, which has had a long shelf life. And beating radio's let's-cut-it-down-to-3-to-4 minute rules, all 6 minutes of the song were played on the radio! This song showed that Gordon was ahead of his time musically, as he sang about a story about a sunken ship and the people on it in storytelling form. Although Gordon hasn't put as much music output recently, this collection shows his dominance in the '70s as a dynamic songwriter, performer and artist.
