Free Music Notes for Gordon Lightfoot - Complete Greatest HitsFree Music Review: Gordon the Great Hit: 5 StarsI never knew how much I loved Gordon Lightfoot or how prolific he was until I heard this cd. Usually even "greatest hits cd's" have throwaway songs but I have to say, every single song on here is a winner.
There are songs on here that never quite got the airplay as "Sundown" or "If you Could Read My Mind", and I was astonished at how great they are. I can (and do) play this cd over and over. The joy his music has given me immeasurable. I can't think of anyone who wouldn't like his music; it really transcends gender and age.
Free Music Review: Wonderful songwriting makes for a brilliant compilation Hit: 5 StarsIt's difficult to say much that hasn't been said before, and likely said better, by many other reviewers. So I guess I'll just add another voice to those who have mentioned the beauty of the songs in this compilation, and their timelessness.
While a certain track about a ship is the one that my parents played endlessly while I was growing up, my personal favorite track is "If you could read my mind," which I believe is one of the most beautiful and sad songs ever written. Lyrics that touch the heart, sung over spare but perfectly used guitar, ultimately building to an almost heartbreaking finale.
I've always thought, as a Canadian, that Lightfoot was one of our more underappreciated musical contributors. So it's gratifying to read so many wonderful reviews of his work on here, from those who appreciate his artistry.
Free Music Review: I love songs about maritime disasters Hit: 5 StarsSo it's obvious why I like Gordon Lightfoot. I'm not going to tell you a giant fib, I dig songs like Sundown and If you could read my mind as well, but Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is just off the chain whack. I have a band in Gretna called, Sons of the seas, we sing nothing but songs about ships that have sunk. It's me on vocals(of course), J abs on drums(duh), Burns on keyboards and pan flute and Kroll on bass guitar, accordian and dog whistle. We have do some covers like this the Edmund Fitzgerald, but have also wrote some phenomenal songs like:
Billy Zane is a meanie(the story of Titanic)
Uh Oh, the Lusitania is sinking!
The story of that ship in Michigan
The tugboat that couldn't float anymore
There be a hole in our boat
We play to big crowds and dress just like Captain Stubing from the love boat with real captain's hats. We throw life preservers out to the crowd to give our show that added spice. Women dig this project and I invite a couple of them to walk my plank after each show.
Free Music Review: This Man is a Master Who Commands Your Respect And Your Heart... Hit: 5 StarsAnd this is perhaps the best place to start with a Gordon Lightfoot album purchase because it includes all of his hits including hits that came after "Gord's Gold" was released in 1975 like "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" and the lesser known but powerful "The Circle Is Small". Simply put, there are some truly perfect songs on here. Listen to the incredible guitar work going on in "If you Could Read My Mind"- one of the greatest songs ever written. And the groove and chords going on in "Sundown". I just saw him perform live in Boston and people in the audience were hailing him almost as much as Brian Wilson.
Free Music Review: The Essence of Lightfoot Hit: 5 StarsGordon Lightfoot gives his all in his Greatest Hits CD. The music takes you to another place of quiet and relaxation. All of his talents are presented solely in this CD.
