Free Music Notes for Destroyer

Free Music Review: the sounds of hell await
Hit: 4 Stars

Before I even began listenning to black metal, I heard the song Destroyer and it absolutely blew me away. Sheer blinding brutality followed by great musicianship-perhaps it is no understatement I would never be the same again.
This album marks the transformation of Gorgoroth from the more old school black metal to a new more innovative mode. Accented with odd effects here and there, intense guitars and Ghaal's vocals make this album both heavy and dark.
It has been criticized by fans somewhat as not being linear and all over the place. But it is still a fine work from a great band.

Free Music Review: not as good as their other stuff
Hit: 3 Stars

when this came out, I ran out and got it, because all their other c.d.s are awesome. I was disapointed. If you've never heard gorgoroth, don't get "destroyer", but instead get "under the sign of hell"(*****), "antichrist"(****), or "pentagram"(***1/2). Destroyer is still good, but not as flowing, could be partly due to every song being performed by different people playing different instruments.

Free Music Review: WHAT HAPPENED TO GORGOROTH?
Hit: 2 Stars

Can someone please tell me what the hell happened to the mighty GORGOROTH? I was expecting from other reviews that "Destroyer" would be inferior to "Under the Sign of Hell" but not this profoundly inferior. I highly recommend purchasing any of GORGOROTH'S earlier titles as they are truly compositions of supreme Norse black metal, but "Destroyer" does not measure up to the glorious tradition that this band had firmly established with their previous recordings. The point is, that it just doesn't resemble Gorgoroth and there is a very good reason for this. The music was not written by Infernus, nor any other central member of this band. The music was written by the individuals, Telnes & Tiegs. This is a great tragedy in the sense that the musicians who performed these compositions, Infernus, Ares, Vrolok, Gaahl, could have certainly produced far superior material as they have proven to do so in the past. It's quite distressing to write these words but I truly strain to even rate this record with 2 stars. The new album, "Incipith Sathanas" should be released in the near future, although. Hopefully, it will return GORGOROTH to its original high standings. My last words: buy all other GORGOROTH titles and pursue the new but extremely rare cd, "A Sorcery Written In Blood" which is a cd pressing of the original GORGOROTH 1993 demo & '94 promo. However, avoid the "Destroyer" record, especially if you've never experienced this band.
