Free Music Notes for Demon DaysFree Music Review: also watched the concert on TV...... Hit: 5 Stars
was blown away by it.
This band to me was all about "Clint Eastwood". I'd heard the whole CD and was sort of into it. It was a little too heavy on the hip hop side, so I thought I knew all about what the band was.
WRONG!
The concert, first and foremost, made me see a whole new side to the group. There were strong musical, rhythmic, and lastly melodic stuff in here. And despite the darkness of the lyrics (of some of the tunes, not to mention the mood of the animation being pretty dark), there was an overall joy to the proceedings. During both Dirty Harry and Demon Days, a " musical conductor" was giving a "gospel bounce" in time to the music.
Kind of makes you want to dance. Me, anyway.
And there was a bit of humor, as puppets 2D and Murdoc were throwing popcorn on the audience from the balcony.
So I buy the CD first.
This thing has it all. Sparse mood music, trip hop, an almost gospel feel, light rock, and rock rap. Sometimes in the same song.
The melodies are VERY strong, the rhythms move (tell me you don't want to "snake" to "Dirty Harry"), and the band rocks, even on the more trippy tunes.
I'd advise not only the CD, but also the DVD at the same time.
It's just that good.
Free Music Review: Best Album So Far This Year Hit: 5 Stars
This is definitely the best album I have heard this year, although my exposure to today's music isn't exactly all encompassing. As other people have said, this second album is different than the Gorillaz' first one. The absence of Del really hurts the rap segments in this second album. This is not to say the hip hop is bad, it's just that in the first album, Del WAS Russell and it's now hard to separate the two. As a long time Blur fan though, I like Damon's voice which is (as usual) found throughout the album. The beginning tracks and the end ones are the strongest. The middle ones are not bad, just weaker than the other parts. However, the album is really cohesive and looking at the pictures and the lyrics (found online) you can really see a message.
As for the people trying to rip the tracks off the CD, I had no problem using abcde on my NetBSD box to convert the tracks to .ogg files (in fact there are already two CDDB entries for the CD, meaning people have been ripping the CD). It could just be a Windows thing, which sucks for you guys, because I can listen to the songs on my iRiver. Also there is a pretty cool remix of Feel Good Inc and Cake's Never There online. Just google "gorillaz cake feel good" and you'll find it.
Free Music Review: awsome cd from my favorite band ever! Hit: 5 Stars
Demon days is Gorillaz 2nd album and it is truely kick ass! I am a huge Gorillaz fan, they are my life! I can say that their new album has a different sound to it from their first album (which I love to death! in my opinion i think it is better than demon days) To everyone who is reading my review right now, take my warning--do not bother reading other people's reviews that gave this album and their first album a one star rating. They are all just whinners and complainers and have absolutly no taste for good music. They just wanna see how many Gorillaz fans they can piss off out their on Amazon. "aww this stuff sucks!" "I HATE Gorillaz"....see what I'm talking about. How can you not like this cd? Dont be one of the stupid people....trust me, go out to your local music store (like sam goodys--thats where i got mine) buy this cd, slap it into your cd player or put the songs on your I-Pod, (which ever way works for you) and listen to it, you'll love it. The songs can cause you to dance (like DARE) so its fun to listen to. I am truely a mega Gorillaz fan--i have both of their cd, their dvd (which kicks ass, i cant stop watching it) and my aunt also bought me a shirt with 2D on it from hot topic up where she lives--which im gonna get soon.
Free Music Review: Experimental, quirky, urban. Hit: 5 Stars
I recently bought the new Gorillaz album, Demon Days, which I have been anticipating for quite sometime now ever since I caught a glimpse at their music video for the single `Feel Good inc.' I must admit I was immediately captivated by the intensely original and slightly off illustrations and graphics of Jamie Hewlett while their just as intensely original and experimental sound left be some what bewildered. Their music I admit does take a bit of acquiring when first listened to. With such a variety of integrated beats and instrumentals and not to mention the ghostly vocals of front man, Damon Albern [aka 2D; the animated lead vocalist of the group] it is not surprising to me that it takes more than one time for the ears to take in the full impact of their music. The `Project, Gorillaz' has proven to be a revolutionary movement in music itself, melding together the collaborations of many different artists and styles with the politically and environmentally aware lyrics to back it up. With an immensely urban vibe coursing through the newly released album, smooth vocals, intriguing lyrics and the equally intriguing animated group members, this is definitely one album that you don't want to overlook in the music section.
Free Music Review: Damon Albarn + Danger Mouse = Genius Hit: 5 Stars
Demon Days will be a sure candidate to be on many people's Top 10 lists for 2005. The kind of CD that's both challening and fun at the same time. Maybe the initial novelty of the Gorillaz idea has worn off, but I agree with the Amazon review that this is an upgrade over the self-titled debut. While there were many great songs on the debut, at 71 minutes Gorillaz felt a little too long and not consistently able to match the greatness of "Clint Eastwood" or "19-2000". The addition of Danger Mouse as producer has brought Demon Days to a new level. The enitre CD is full of tightly focused, catchy as hell yet still unique-sounding songs. It has the killer single (Feel Good, Inc. is definitely the equal to Clint Eastwood) and all the other songs have all the right pieces in all the right places. The blend of Damon in all his Britishness with kooky dance/sci-fi vibes and well-placed and delivered raps and background vocals make every song a worthwile listen. Damon has traveled this blend of dance and rock since the Blur 13 CD, and while William Orbit and Fatboy Slim got it mostly right, Danger Mouse helps Damon to finally put it all together. All in all, a brilliant CD that you will want to listen to time and time again.
