Free Music Notes for Demon DaysFree Music Review: Demon Days gives more evidence that Damon Alburn is a genius Hit: 5 Stars
For me, this cd was a letdown waiting to happen. The original Gorillaz cd, while not a 100% great, had 3 or 4 songs that were so good it made the entire cd seem good. With Gorillaz producer Nakamura gone, and DJ Danger Mouse in, Demon Days provides a cd with much more consistancy. A few tracks easily stand out as winners with just a listen (Feel Good Inc., Every Planet We Come to is Dead, and November Has Come), while others may take some time to get into (mainly the last three tracks of the cd, Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head, Don't Get Lost in Heaven, and Demon Days). Dennis Hopper provides a narration to the Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head that creates one of the most crazy songs in years. Feel Good Inc. as the first single provide instant comparisons to Clint Eastwood, but unfortunately, can't match that song's greatness. However, unlike the first cd's numerous bombs (such as Gravity, M1A1, Punk, Clapper, 5/4... basically everything but Clint Eastwood, Latin Simone, Tomorrow Comes Today and depending on one's mood, 19-2000, Slow Country or Starshine). The only real bomb on this cd is White Light. A surprise song is DARE, a catchy song which Gwen Stefani wishes she could make... or at least have made for her to sing. With this side-group, Damon Alburn continues to attempt any pop labels he might have gotten with early Blur albums. Though his constant changing of styles may anger some guitarists, he proves to be a man with great musical talents.
Free Music Review: A Smooth, Haunting Album Hit: 5 Stars
I recently reviewed Gorillaz first self titled album, giving it two stars.
Who can say why things happen the way they do, but somewhere between the release of their first album, and their second, the Gorillaz got their s~~t together.
For the first sound of 2D singing "Are we the last living souls?" to the last haunting sounds of the choir singing on "Demon Days" aside from a slight misstep, this album takes off and doesn't look back.
Each song has its own distinctiveness, but a thread of melancholy invades almost every second of the album, due almost entirely to Damon "2D" Albarn's raspy, intentionally tired sounding voice. This voice fits perfectly with 2D on the Gorillaz music videos, who looks like he's either been crying, or high on pot. LOL
Its hard to choose favorites, each song is a gem (accept, perhaps, for White Lights, but that, I'm sure, is debateable), but if I were to base it on the songs I listen to the most, it would be Last Living Souls, Kids With Guns, Feel Good INC, La Manana, All Alone, and Dare. As you can see that is like half the album, and I definately would have to point out, the other soungs are great themselves.
"Demon Days" utilizes, in a way the first album was unable to do, a perfect blend of solid beats, smooth vocals, and strong raps. I bought this album a couple of years after its release so the only question now is: when does the next one come out!?
Free Music Review: Feel Good Inc.'s background story Hit: 5 Stars
Though the other songs rock, I just wanted to say this: FGI's Music Video rocks. It actually is an insight into 2-D's character's life. It's about how Gorillaz built this giant tower around themselves, called Feel Good Inc. It's a giant corporation for people to get dead drunk and party all day. The line 2-D sings about his dream's kisses, from what I hear, is about how he kisses his dreams goodbye, since he cannot drink. In the part where he takes the mic and sings, he's trying to get everyone to join in on him and leave. Then that rap part afterwards is like your boss telling you to "Shut up and get back to work!" And that character on the Windmill IS Noodle (at least in my opinion; yes, I know she looks a whole lot like 2-D) and some people are saying that she symbolizes youth and freedom. I also think so. And to prove his wanting to get out, when 2-D looks out at the window hungrily at the Windmill, you know he wants out. And during the whole time, the rapper is trying to get 2-D to be brainwashed like the others by forcing him to say this line repeatedly ("Sh-shake it, shake it, Feel Good."), and when the Windmill leaves, 2-D just sits down and accepts his fate. Well, that's at least everything I've heard. I just put it all together (at least in the order I remembered it; go to http://videos.antville.org/stories/1081822 because that's where I read all this.)
And the Windmill, Windmill chorus gets stuck in your head, doesn't it?
Free Music Review: Feels Very Good!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Blistering rock/hip hop laced electronica from Blur front man Damon Albarn and friends.
The catchy ditty `Dirty Harry' features a children's chorus, a very funky bassline, and dramatic strings. I first heard this when they performed it at the MTV Europe awards in November. The upbeat `Feel good inc' features De La Soul and great string/acoustic breaks. Alternative meets hip hop. `DARE' is a bubbly upbeat number.
`Kids with guns' features spoken lyrics set to a choppy, funky bassline. `El Mañana' is another standout. It features brilliant guitars, electronic effects, cutting strings, and soothing vocals.
The Radiohead-like `Every planet we reach is dead' is a sluggish song with ghostly backing vocals, and lashings of piano and electric guitar. `All alone' has a dub feel and almost jungle beats. It features a nice acoustic break with the vocals of Martina Topley-Bird.
Actor Dennis Hopper narrates the dark and mythical tale of monkey mountain on `Fire coming out of the monkey's head', set to brooding humming, a steady beat, and electronic flourishes. Title track `Demon days', after a string laden intro flows into a slight dub sound, with electronic flourishes and choir style vocals. Rather anthemic!
Repeated play is necessary to grasp the depth of sonic and melodic innovation. Already nominated for 3 Grammys, a work of genius!!!
Free Music Review: One of the Best of '05 Hit: 5 Stars
Despite what future releases are in store for us in the remainder of 2005, I think its safe to say this awesome record will be one of the year's prime cuts. "Feel Good Inc." is currently receiving heavy rotation on MTV and is without a doubt a great hook to reel in potential buyers, although after the massive sales of the Gorillaz self titled debut, I doubt they'll have to worry about faltering numbers. This record is without a doubt the best modern pop album I've heard in years. Every song is laden with catchy hooks and throbbing beats that are sure to cement themselves in listeners heads. However, I have to say "Feel Good Inc." does boast the best bass riffing on the entire album but that isnt to say the rest of the record pales in comparison. "Kids with Guns" and "O Green World" pack a nasty one-two punch and its a great lead in for "Dirty Harry" a "sequel" of sorts to "Clint Eastwood" off of their first record. "Every Planet We Reach is Dead" and "White Light" are also first rate but the crowning king is "Dare". A sure fire four on the floor dance fest, but the festivities don't end there, dont miss Denis Hopper's interesting narrative on "Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head". Anyways Demon Days is simply a audio treat and how can you not adore those cool cartoons!
By the way, be sure to check out the Gorillaz official website, one of the coolest sites ever!
