Free Music Review: A good album for non-owners of the singles... Hit: 4 Stars
The Gorillaz self-titled debut from last year one, in my opinion, was one of the year's best. But the B-Sides, or G-Sides, whatever, from the singles were also excellent, and have now been packaged in one CD that you can buy without having to shell out your hard earned bucks for imports that contain songs you already have on another CD...sort of like Megadeth's "Hidden Treasures"...anyways, most of the songs on this CD are very much above-average. The Soulchild Remix of "19-2000" is amazingly superb. The feel of the song is much different from the original, but I feel it's a much more catchy tune. This also contains a few tracks with some raps being dropped, not by Del, or Russel if you wanna be like that, but Phi Life, I think he's called. He appears on "The Sounder" and, naturally, the "Clint Eastwood Phi Life Cypher Remix." The Sounder is an excellent song, which has a LOT of rapping (The song clocks in at about 6:16) and another Gorillaz trademark incoherent chorus. "Ghost Train" is a typical Gorillaz track: Very odd song structure, very out-of-the-ordinary sounds, and very listenable."G-Sides" seems like an expansion to the Self-Titled album, as if it was a DVD release of an old movie only with special features...yeah...anyways, if you liked the Self-Titled album, and crave some more Gorillaz, this is a must-have.
Free Music Review: Almost perfect... almost. Hit: 4 Stars
I'm a huge fan of the Gorillaz. I love every aspect of this project... from the animation, to the beats, to the vocals from Damon... er.. 2-D. The self-titled debut was my favorite release of last year, so I was very, very anxiously awaiting this release. I hate to say that I'm a little disappointed with it. It fell just short of my expectations, which were perhaps built up a bit too high. Keeping in mind that this is a b-side compilation, the songs are brilliant, and have more hip hop to some of the tracks than the original album did. My only complaints really have to do with what was promoted, and what was delivered. The major disappointment was that it did not include the videos for Rock The House and Tomorrow Comes Today, which have been scarely availible stateside. I've seen both, and Rock The House is just a great clip, so it was a pretty big downer when it didn't appear. I also didn't really like how they placed the 19/2000 mixes so close to one another. I loved how the original tracklisting (and I believe the one Amazon displays above) bookended the disc with them. Coming in at fewer than 40 minutes, they could have easily slapped on a few more tracks as well. These minor (and selfish) complaints aside, if you love the Gorillaz, you'll probably dig this compilation.
Free Music Review: Not bad for only 9 tracks... Hit: 4 Stars
Ok this was really short and I have no clue why it has a PA they dont even cuss, parents let your kids get this its not like its icp or anything. Here is the track review 19/2000 (Soulchild Remix) 8/10 Really cool alternative song, with nice rock beats. Latin Simon 5/10 I never really like the latin version, the english version inst that much better. 19/2000 (wise guy remix) 0/10 ....for hardcore techo fans only. The Sounder 8/10 A really decent rap song with awsome vocals by Phi Life and 2-D. Faust 10/10 Really really great song, one of Gorillaz best! This song is really relaxing and great vocals by Noodle (Hatorie) and 2-D (Albarn) Clint Eastwood (Phi remix) 9/10 Better than the del version, all rap though which is really cool. Ghost Train 8/10 Awsome song with really cool rock bit. Hip Albatross 7/10 The song was kinda wierd, but I liked it how they blended it with dawn of the dead. 12d3 8.5/10 Really cool acustic song with nice keyboard sounds in the backround.
Free Music Review: Won't you buy me? Hit: 4 Stars
The style of this CD is definately consistent with the first one and I like it alot, even though it has the only songs on any of their albums that I don't like. I think that songs like Dracula and Slow Country on the first CD probably could've been switched with songs like Faust and The Sounder. The 19-2000 Soul Child remix is really good too. Another interesting track is the version of Latin Simone with Damon Albarne singing it in English. I really love the original, but the English version is alot better because 2D's voice goes well with Gorillaz beats. Ghost Train and the Phi Life Cypher version of Clint Eastwood are also very worthy. I really don't like the wiseguy house mix of 19-2000, which would go ok in a dance club, but doesn't belong on any Gorillaz album. And also Hip Albatross is sort of pointless. It has sounds from Dawn and Day of the Dead, but that's the only thing that's really interesting about it. This is good if you like Gorillaz 1st CD. So, pick it up. It may be short, but it's worthy.
