Free Music Notes for Gorillaz

Free Music Review: One of the greatest debut albums of the 90's
Hit: 5 Stars

The gorillaz have created a masterpiece in one attempt. They songs are beautifully constructed, layered to all hell, completely original, and have a sense of cohesion (strange when you think of how many styles this album exhibits). These are all traits you would usually expect from a band that's been around for years. But the album, despite it's electronic palate of sounds, is incredibly raw, the best part of a normal debut album.
The controlled genious, playfullness, and raw studio sound bring to mind Odelay, Outkast, the Pixies, the Presidents (RIP), and even Exile on Main Street(!). It actually is incredibly similar to Odelay. If you're one of those people that has memorized every sound on Odelay, I command you to purchase the Gorillaz. You'll thank me later.
The next amazing thing about this album is its length. It has seventeen tracks, and maybe three weak ones. It seems like a combined cd, with an lp and an ep, but it's just one lp. Believe me, you WILL GET YOUR MONEY'S WORTH WITH THIS ALBUM.
There are weaknesses, though. The songs, or at least some of them, could use some conciseness. Rock the House, Sound Check, and Slow Country (the best song on the album) go on forever. Which is a shame because songs like 5/4 (yes, it's named after the time signiture, which is actually 5/4 over 2/4), Clint Eastwood, 19-2000, and Re-Hash are perfectly paced, disjointed pop songs made in another universe. The other songs just sound rushed. Then there's the weak tracks that are a result of packing too much material into the album. It looses steam after Double Bass as far as cohesion goes, and there's a drop in song quality after Latin Simone (except for Slow Country).
But don't let the cartoon characters scare you away from a VERY seriously good album. Pretend they aren't there, if you must.

Free Music Review: One of my favorite albums ever
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought this album right when it came out and it was the first album I ever bought (I'm only 19). So, I've been listening to this album for nearly ten years. I know a lot of people never heard of them until Demon Days, which is pretty unfortunate, because I think you really have to hear this album first to really appreciate it. When people hear Demon Days first their expectations are too high.

On to the songs. I have to say my absolute favorite is Clint Eastwood. You have to understand, as a kid, I only listened to the songs on an album that I was really familiar with so until a couple years ago, I never listened to it all the way through in one sitting. I would just sit there with Clint Eastwood on repeat everyday. However, I've grown to realize this album is a classic and I wish I would've listened to it more as a kid. The only songs I really listened to as a kid were Clint Eastwood, 19-2000, Slow Country, and Sound Check (Gravity). Those songs are still some of my favorites but listening to this album again I discovered another favorite, Starshine. Reading the reviews on here no one thinks this song is anything special and that kind of disappoints me. The guitar riff in it is simply brilliant. Listening to the album in one sitting is also a completely different experience. Hearing just the first five tracks in a row made me realize this. Keep in mind, this is a very experimental album and a lot of the tracks are completely different. Re-Hash is a brilliant opener because it's right in the middle and perfectly represents the album.

I think I've pretty much covered everything. All in all, it's a classic and if you're a new fan because of Demon Days and Plastic Beach, please give this album a listen. Those two albums are classics also and I feel that Gorillaz are one of the best bands ever.

Free Music Review: Funky Hip-Hop Alternative with Style
Hit: 5 Stars

Style should be the name of the genre that the Gorillaz are making their name in, as their sound can barely be classified into any one category except new age and it definitely runs in its own path. Some have called it funk, some hip-hop, I've called it alternative, others have called it techno. They use all sorts of instrumental sounds: drums; electric and acoustic guitars; possibly a bell; a harmonica; a piano and keyboard; and with plenty of base backing these sounds.

And we can't forgot the characters that make up the Gorillaz or their distinct, sometimes creepy, always funny appearances.

Gorillaz Gorillaz is as varied as mentioned, but there seems to be one theme in all their songs: unpredictability. None of these songs seem to make much sense, and with their cool instrumentals a chaotic lyrics. The lyrics, all of them, are still great, from the slow voiced songs, to the classic-style raps, to the foreign language, all of them have a sound that's addictive.

The stand-outs on this CD, and believe it or not there are some I think are a cut above the rest on this excellent CD, are Clint Eastwood, both the normal version and the remix; Sound Check, a haunting song about gravity; 19-2000 and the remix about cool shoe-shines (I think); and Rock the House, which carries a classic rap style that throws itself back to the days of the Sugerhill Gang's Rapper's Delight. But like I said, this CD has so many hits that the ones I consider the best are not the best by far.

I can't really recommend this to any one group. Just buy it and you won't be sorry. The Gorillaz, with the release of this and their later CDs, have solidified themselves as a rare breed: that breed being the one that just doesn't mess up.

Free Music Review: Still a timeless classic, but it is a little bit more punk than hip-hop.
Hit: 5 Stars

Then again, it's a lot more than either punk or hip-hop can fully cover. It is basically everything you have ever heard, but reimagined in a completely different way. Every track on here is great, and not just good, which is something the I can't say for most CDs, including the Gorillaz' own Demon Days album.

The first Gorillaz CD is to Gorillaz as Nevermind was to Nirvana. It is the timeless classic that can be listened to over and over again without a likely chance of growing tired of it. While this CD is less of an acquired taste than the first CD is, and is still very good, it's not as good.

Danger Mouse pales in comparison to Dan the Automater's producing skills in the first work. The reason for this is in the variety. Danger Mouse has set a tone that plays throughout the CD, with each and every track. Dan the Automater on the other hand, delivered a CD with so much variety there would have to be something for everyone. Whereas CD 1 covered the broad range of reggae, Latin, punk, pop, rock, dance, rap, hip-hop, DJ, ska, and just about every type of music available, this CD sticks its feet in firm territory and never moves.

CD 1 is for the music in general lover, CD 2 is for those like the one particular sound that can be heard in most of the Gorillaz more recent videos. If you had to choose between the two, I'd go with CD 1 first, and then maybe get CD 2 later, when you get the chance.

Just make sure CD 1 comes with Dracula, Suzuki Left Hand Method, and the Clint Eastwood/19-2000 remixes as well... as most of original Gorillaz albums these days should have. You wanna get the most for your money after all.

Free Music Review: At last..something new and refreshing!
Hit: 5 Stars

I, like most of the other reviewers was introduced to Gorillaz by the "Clint Eastwood" video on MTV. I knew this was not your ordinary trip-hop combo right away and thought that I could hear something familiar. On a whim, I bought it and was suprised that Damon from Blur was involved (as you can tell by my user name, I was gleeful to say the least). The added bonus was Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto) with her familiar sampling skills and quirky, if not charming voice. This CD is packed with every combination of music you can think of ! It has everything that a Cibo Matto and Blur fan could hope for, incredible lo-fi sound with brilliant synth samples! I have listened to it non-stop since I bought it and I am constantly hearing different nuances and suprises! I am not familiar with Da Funky Homosapien, but now inclined to explore that territory!

It is difficult to pick one track over the other but with if you like experimental blending of all types of music, such as Beck, wry wit, samples you have never heard and what I consider an intelligent style of rapping (a la Beastie Boys) this CD has your name written all over it!

My one piece of advice is that you don't buy it solely on the "Clint Eastwood" track, it gives a slightly skewed perspective on the rest of the CD. If you are looking for more songs like that you may be dissapointed.

This is perhaps the most exciting CD I have purchased in a couple of years. The entire package is fabulous and creative including the "cartoon band" with thier alter egos. I hope for more collaborations soon. Be sure and check out he website as well, that is full of many suprises!

Cheers!
