Free Music Notes for Gorillaz

Free Music Review: Unidentified, excellent, music.
Hit: 5 Stars

Before Gorillaz I had never heard of Damon Albarn, or Blur, or anything like that. But I had heard of Del Tha Funky Homosapien who raps on Clint Eastwood and Rock The House. I also knew Dan the Automator who produced the Gorillaz Self-titled debut. I'm a pretty big rap fan but I like rock as well. So being a big Del fan I heard he was going to be involved in a brand-new, experimental rock band. It sounded cool so I awaited the album. Then I started hearing Clint Eastwood on the radio. What an excellent song. A dark sounding hip-hop beat with an incredible piano loop. I loved the sleepy vocals on the chorus and Del's rhymes were tighter than ever.

After that I had to pick up the album. I went out that day and got it. And to tell you the truth I didn't like it that much. I was expecting an album of "clint eastwood" thinking Gorillaz was a hip-hop band. But after getting over that and listening to the album more it grew on me and I fell in love with it. This is truly one of the most creative and abstract albums i've heard. I like all kinds of music and that's one of the reasons why I love this album. So many sounds come together in this album. Hip-hop, blues, jazz, rock, reggae it's all there. Even the idea behind the band and image is great. The idea of a cartoon band with each member being represented by a crazy cartoon is excellent. This also makes their videos pretty awesome.

So if you're looking for something new, and are open minded I would suggest this album. Over anything else. It's got the best from so many different kinds of music it's hard not to love it. One problem though, I need the second album!!

Free Music Review: Great CD!
Hit: 5 Stars

This CD rules! When I first bought it I thought "Oh no, I just bought a really bad album with 2 good songs", but I kept listening anyway and it is my favourite CD of all time because I gave it a chance, it hasn't left my CD player since I got it. However, my CD does not have Dracula or left hand suzuki method, it has a 19-2000 remix and a Clint Eastwood remix.

19-2000: Great beat, great lyrics, great song, nuff' said.

19-2000 (Soulchild remix): Same as before, just faster.

5-4: Pretty good beat and funny and good lyrics, "she turned my dad on!!"

Clint Eastwood: The hit single and best song of all time, a must listen to, a treat to the ears, and great lyrics.

Clint Eastwood (Sweetie irie refix): Ruined because it doesn't have del's lyrics in it, it has some guy with a rough voice. Still a great song.

Double bass: weird jungle beat. Good song.

Latin Simone: Absolutely mad spanish beat, mexican music never seemed good until now.

M1 A1: Keep listening past the "HELLO" bit and a great song is in store for your ears.

Man Research: once again, Gorillaz strikes with their beat and lyrics.

New Genious: My favourite song besides of course Clint Eastwood.

Punk: Simple Punk rock, didn't like punk rock till now.

Re-Hash: Lyrics, beat, another strike.

Rock the house ...(speechless at sheer greatness of song)...

Slow Country: Although this song is great, it's the worst song on the album.

Sound Check: after the girly lyrics, great Dj song.

Starshine: just keep listening and it's a good song.

Tommorow comes today: good song.

Free Music Review: Excellent Collaboration
Hit: 5 Stars

I suppose that I probably carry a little bit of prejudice to this album. It just so happens that I had encountered Cibo Matto before this album, and I have recently discovered that I'm partial to Del tha Funkee Homosapien, so it's probably pretty safe to assume that I'd like a collaboration between all these individuals. Fortunately, I don't think that my take on this album is all attributable to my personal lean.

Gorillaz is probably the most interesting new major market release that I've heard in a long time, which is a welcome event in the overproduced, bulk music environment of today. While I hate the concept of the album (postmodernism is a beast that should never have reared its ugly head in philosophical circles, and expanding the notion to music is just offensive), the music is superb. I won't try to categorize the songs on this album, essentially because that'd be quite a trick to perform. Clint Eastwood (and all the other tracks where Del plays a major role, for that matter) play with various mixtures of hip hop, while Latin Simone sounds like a remix of something off Buena Vista Social Club.

Ultimately, there should be something on this album for everybody, regardless of their peculiar interest, and I'd venture a guess that most people will be able to enjoy the music here. Cartoon character bands don't have the best history (Alvin and the Chipmunks anyone?), but maybe Gorillaz can turn that trend around. Collaborative efforts like this aren't famous for lasting, but as long as they're here, Gorillaz can offer just about anybody something to listen to.

Free Music Review: the best hip hop rock dub cartoon band ever!
Hit: 5 Stars

I have never heard Damon Albarn before, i found about this album from a combination of play on mtv and knowledge of past projects including Dan the Automator and Del, a unique halfway underground rapper who pops up in the strangest places. Anyone coming from my perspective will be surprised by this album - hell, anyone will be surprised by this album. It is an utterly effortless fusion of delicious lo fi hip hop, relaxed dub, and energetic punk rock. The combination of such bold and surefooted experimentation and the catchy hooks that got it on mtv in the first place is unprecedented.
The album is varied and it has a few slow points (Man Research, Sound Check), but they don't really get in the way, they just give breathing room between the joyful and dark whirlwind of culture. As for good tracks, there is the rhythmic gimmick of rock joint 5/4, the impenetrable lyrics and the pure punk power of Punk. Clint Eastwood (why is it called clint eastwood?) is a perfect single, with its catchy hook and Del's paced lyricism, and Rock the House and Double Bass are excellent bits of rhythmically infections production. Latin Simone is a great song, and the whole Cuban thing comes out of nowhere, and M1 A1 - well, I don't get it, but I can't help singing along with what I think Albarn is saying.
All in all, this Gorillaz project is a total success of an experiment. The persona of the band is fascinating and adds to the fun and humorous but kind of dark atmosphere of the most delightfully weird pop cd ever made.

Free Music Review: Refreshing Change of Pace
Hit: 5 Stars

Since I don't live in the UK, I wasn't all that familiar with Blur, except for a couple of songs. And after watching the "Clint Eastwood" video on MTV2, I thought that it was cool to look at and listen to. But since this is a high-concept project, I was skeptical that a whole album could be produced by an "animated" band that was any good. Boy, was I wrong. This album rocks! It's a wonderfully creative and totally original dark mix of rock, punk, and hip-hop, with a little foreign language song thrown in. The beats are infectious and the sounds are all over the scale and kind of weird. The best tracks include "Tomorrow Comes Today", "Clint Eastwood", "Double Bass", "Rock The House", "19-2000", "Dracula", and "Left Hand Suzuki Method". After the last track comes 2 1/2 minutes of dead silence before we get the Ed Case/Sweetie Irie remix of "Clint Eastwood". I don't know why we get silence, but don't turn off your CD player after the violin fades out. Parents should not be put off by the "Parental Advisory" sticker. Except for a couple of F-word utterances, this album is harmless. You probably won't miss much if you buy the edited version. I wish I could see more videos, but MTV and MTV2 have only played "Clint Eastwood". This album is a wonderful departure from the usual prepackaged pop and rap.
