Free Music Review: Before the Great Schism
Hit: 4 Stars

This 1978 album by the tall handsome French singer was produced by Jacques Morali at Sigma Sound in NYC so the music sounds like your fairly typical disco of the era, a style dominated by strings, horns and guitars. In addition, Juvet's high voice resembles the BeeGees falsetto vocals of the phenomenal Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, making I Love America even more characteristic of the time. That, however, doesn't mean that it's derivative or mediocre. The catchy uptempo Got A Feeling which was a club hit I'm sure, is followed by the rather tepid ballad Another Lonely Man. Then the fun starts with the 2nd best track Where Is My Woman, a tuneful foot-tapper with a mix of French and English lyrics and an expansive, spacious sound. This song was co-written by the French synth-master Jean Michel Jarre. There was also a French only version titled Ou Sont les Femmes? which was a chart hit in Europe.

The highlight of the album is of course the 14-minute suite I Love America, an exuberant celebration of the United States, its sounds, its cities and its sense of life. Over a hypnotic beat, the intricate arrangement intrigues the listener with the most arresting variations in percussive timbre and sonic color representing different genres of American music like disco, salsa, soul, rock `n roll and funk; even country and western is favorably appraised! Now and then Juvet's enthralling vocals are interrupted by propulsive rhythm breaks that serve to accentuate - when the vocals resume - the ever-shifting textures giving rise to the distinctive flavors of e.g. Latin-American and Rock music, spiced by sound effects like enthusiastic applause. Listen quick, there's Little Richard banging the pianoforte! And `Quero baila la salsa' at that festive street party? An exciting journey through place and sound, this charming opus mentions New York City, LA, Frisco, California, the East and West Coasts. Infectious and uplifting, I Love America is right up there with timeless disco classics like Le Freak by Chic, The Trammps' Disco Inferno, Donna Summer's Bad Girls or the BeeGees' Staying Alive.

The disco era gave popular music much more than just four beats to the bar or one to shake your booty to! The best songs of the style had personality, melody and flair, plus faire, as in Savoir, by Chic. That's why disco transcended the club scene, conquered the airwaves and ruled the charts from New York to LA as Patsy Gallant affirmed and from Munich to the Antipodes in Giorgio Moroder's achievement. In its relentless optimism, disco was the direct opposite of and antidote to the anger and the angst emanating from so much of the punk, goth and early industrial music of the mid to late 1970s. This spirit of aggression migrated to Hip-Hop's Gangsta Rap in the 1990s where without any redeeming innovative or arty aspirations it decomposed into the totally tasteless and the viscerally vulgar.

The demise of disco round about 1980 signaled the start of dance music's fragmentation into bewildering niches like EclectoTechno, Slime & Grime and Regressive House. All of these sub-genres derive from the original Great Schism between the sound of the human voice (often a wailing diva) and the soulless sounds of the machine. Of today's familiar or umbrella genres, the most vapid is called Ahr and Bee (an insult to the real R&B of the 50s and 60s) and the most mechanically inhuman is covered by terms like Techno & Electro. The death of disco was moreover followed by the regrettable birth of Rap that, exceptions noble like Arrested Development or at least quirky like Eminem aside, poisoned popular culture with its violent and misanthropic themes. Let us therefore appreciate Patrick Juvet's appealing blend of American and Euro Disco as emblematic of the golden age of dance music, and let us drink often from the well of its still frisky joie de vivre that is absent from contemporary dance music's multitude of mutations.
