Free Music Review: Great CD!
Hit: 5 Stars

I first heard "Vuevo al sur" on my Musicmatch radio station and after hearing "Triptico" I knew I had to buy the CD. I really enjoy the CD and it's great background/party music. Not all of the songs are as hypnotic as my 4 favorites (the above two, Santa Maria, and Chunga's Revenge), but the video on the extra disc makes it worth 5 stars!

Also, a note for the music fan from Lemon Cove, CA: "tango" is actually described as a Latin American genre and the word has numerous meanings. We are most familiar with the international definition of the tango, which would be Argentinean. There is, however, a "tango" tradition in Brazil, such as the 'tango brasileiro' (check out Darius Milhaud's pieces based on Brazilian music). The Brazilian tango is based on the Cuban habanera, but nonetheless carries the title of "tango".

So, according to your logic (as so eloquently stated in your review), the Russians may actually have their own style of caipirinha. Probably made with vodka (blech!).

Free Music Review: Chill out Tango!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I was introduced to this CD by my cousin Chike (who is aware that I love experimenting musically), and I love it! The Gotan Project (Gotan is a reversal of the syllables in the word Tango) comprises a multinational trio, and their style is Jazzy Electro Tango (well, that's how I describe it), largely instrumental, with a few vocals usually spoken and in Spanish.

However, an understanding of Spanish isn't necesary to appreciate this calming, beautiful music. Yes, it does sound like what you'd hear in the background at some swanky lounge or bar (like the Amazon review mentions), but it's one that would have you asking the waiter "Who plays that?".

My favourites are "Una musica brutal" (with lovely female vocals), the piano driven beauty "Last tango in Paris", "La del ruso", and the eerie sounding horn sprinkled "Chunga's revenge" (with male spoken vocals), apparently a remake of a Frank Zappa song.

Very classy Chill Out music. Thank you Chike!

Free Music Review: Argentinean Tango, coupled with Electronica....
Hit: 5 Stars

The sleeper hit of 2001/2002, most people didn't catch onto "The Gotan Project" until midway through 2002...and mostly by word of mouth, and was something of a essential purchase for the musical enthusiasts....Think Argentinean Tango daringly integrated with stylish Electronica...and the results were exceptional, first track "Queremos Paz", opens the album with expansive Spanish Guitars & Lush Percussion mixing styles effortlessly, and yet keeping true to it's Argentinean roots...the Electronica side of things it used very subtly to enhance proceedings. Admittedly there's nothing here that is new or innovative, but depth of vision, and perfected Execution go a hell of a long way, to not only producing an album that is as vital as "Bebel Gilberto's - Tanto Tempo", but construct an album not fashioned around current musical trends, which therefore gives this release a Longevity beyond its Contemporaries.

Free Music Review: Slinky, seductive and addictive - listen at your peril!
Hit: 5 Stars

The name says it all - "Gotan" is a twist on "tango", the dance that's famed as "the vertical expression of a horizontal desire. Gotan takes the distinctive sound of the Buenos Aires squeezebox or bandoneon, plus violin plus the basic "slooow, sloooow, quick-quick sloooow" pulse and the sultry attitude of the tango, overlays loping bass'n'drums'n'dub and filters the whole mix through a witty Parisian post-modern sensibility.

It's slinky, seductive and very addictive.

And provocative. The opening track "Queremos paz" (We want peace) samples Che Guevara's 1964 address to the UN General Assembly and "El Capitalismo Foraneo" (Foreign Capitalism) echoes with the ghostly presence of Evita Peron. There are cool reworks of Zappa's piece "Chunga's Revenge" and Gato Barbieri's theme for the movie "Last Tango in Paris".

It's lounge, it's mellow, it's sexy and it has just the right edge of sweet Argentinean sadness.

Free Music Review: Café, Factura y Gotan
Hit: 5 Stars

Memorable.

Aguante, Astor Piazzola :)
