Free Music Notes for Gounod: Romeo Et Juliette AlbumFree Music Review: Best Romeo On Record Hit: 5 StarsThis is a fine recording of Gounod's Romeo et Juliette, and even surpasses the gorgeous Placido Domingo/Ruth Anne Swenson edition that was made in 1995 or the even mor recent Angela Gheorghiu/Roberto Alagna recording made in 2000. This classic studio recording features the talents of two fine artists- Mirella Freni and Franco Corelli in a performance that captures the spirit of the Shakespearean tragedy and French lyric opera it is. Franco Corelli can always be counted on to do outstanding work, despite all the hogwash critics spewed claiming his French diction was a mess. Although it is true it was a weak point - his strengths like so many tenors in his time was the Italian department in opera - Corelli makes the most of his rich, seductive and powerful voice to great dramatic effect. From a purely vocal quality, he is brilliant. His only true successor was Placido Domingo, who at the older age of 50 something sang a successful Romeo. Other beloved Romeos have included Alfredo Kraus. Roberto Alagna makes a fine modern Romeo, though I dont much care for the mature-sounding Angela Gheorghiu as Juliette, whose voice is too "wordly" for the young Juliette. Mirella Freni, on the other hand, benefits from her youthful age in this recording and the fact she was still singing purely lyric roles and she was not quite the star she became later in the 70's and 80's. Corelli is the older one in this recording, which dates from the 60's. At this time, Corelli was still in fine shape and taking on a lot of projects, including several operas he sang opposite the formidable Birgit Nilsson. As Romeo, he is better than Don Jose in Carmen, a role he could never truly master in the original French. Singing opposite the vibrant and youthful Mirella Freni, they are the epitome of the tragic lovers. The music is handled like a priceless lost opera. This is hands down the best Romeo et Juliette on record.
