Free Music Review: A great moment in time...

With the modern recording technology available today, any pedestrian musician can be enhanced into the "second coming." Hell, the damn machines are even replacing symphony orchestra musicians in live performances. That's what makes a live recording like "Easy Street" such a pleasure. Superb players in an informal setting just doing their thing. Showing off their diverse influences, the Mule take on a number of crowd pleasing favorites. Highlights for me are the epic keyboard and then guitar jams that energize the powerful "Time to Confess." Warren Hayne's playing is truly inspired and it continues throughout the album. Sometimes overlooked amid all the musical pyrotechnics are Warren's vocal skills. His strong, soulful voice gives substance to the emotions conveyed by his guitar playing. I've only listed the one song as you can see the rest of the list here on the web page. My only criticism of the set is that the tempo is very similar throughout. And, while I like the reggae tinged songs like "Soulshine" and "Unring the Bell," a little more variety would be nice in such a short set. I saw the show the following night at the Moore Theater in Seattle. I wish the sound had been as clear as on this recording: the bass and keyboards were mush except in spots. I hope Mule fans will find a way to pick up this disc. It's a great snapshot of great live act at that point in time.
