Free Music Review: Indispensable Piece of '60s Musical History

As a diehard Jefferson Airplane fan I may be biased, but in my mind The Great Society was the most influential band of the 60s that most people have never heard of. Recorded in 1966 about the same time the Beatles were laying down tracks for Revolver, it reveals a band considerably ahead of its time stylistically. Though they had some rough edges such as David Miner's vocals, these are easily forgiven with Grace's crystaline pure voice and the creative drive of the band that produced two of the great anthems of the decade: "Somebody To Love" and "White Rabbit".
Grace's talent and balls as a songwriter are also on display with "Often As I May". When you listen to this "love" song, remember this was only two years after "I Want To Hold Your Hand". It was also a year before the Stones caved to Ed Sullivan with "Let's Spend The Night Together" and the Doors got permanently banned from that show for "Light My Fire". That song should have been a '60s anthem as well and might have been if it had carried over to Surrealistic Pillow.
