Free Music Review: Oh Sweet Fallen Angel!
Hit: 5 Stars

When you think about the music that was made in the last few decades, there are certain names that come instantly to mind. John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Pete Townshend. But unless you are in your 40s, very hip, or some kind of historian, the name Gram Parsons may still be a little unfamiliar. The CD you are thinking about buying puts together in one place, almost everything you need to have as an introduction to this great artist. If you look at the cover, you will think you are looking at the cover to Easy Rider. Well, thats the vibe. ... Gram Parsons will knock you out on the Burrito Bros. tracks. If you never heard these before, you will be an instant fan. His solo stuff is harder to take, but some swear by it. If you want the coolest country music ever laid down, go no further, but beware, you might want to follow Gram's lead and become a Gram Parsons wannabe. ...

Free Music Review: he sure could sing...
Hit: 5 Stars

Gram Parsons was a brilliant and unique artist, an innovator who dared to mix country and rock, sing songs by black people, and put fuzz-tone on the steel guitar. Needless to say, the country music establishment was even less receptive to new ideas in the late 60's than it is now.

Now, taking a moment to split hairs regarding the song lineup here: in a perfect world, you would have the Byrds version of "Lazy Day", the Burritos' "Further Along" and either "Break My Mind" or "Six Days on the Road", and maybe "Cash on the Barrelhead" from Grievous Angel... BUT REGARDLESS, this set remains a miracle of cross-licensing, and a near-perfect document of an illustrious career that was sadly cut short. If you aren't familiar with Gram Parsons, you are advised to check him out.

Free Music Review: One Hot Burrito To Go, Please.
Hit: 5 Stars

If you appreciate the talents of Gram Parsons and share an affinity for what is now "old Style" country that is fused with "old style" rock, then this compilation is for you. I was a big fan of the Burritos in the seventies and had a deep appreciation for the later solo work of Parsons, but I had never had the opportunity to experience his work with The International Submarine Band. Well, I was blown away! The songs hold up today as a kind of pure country music that tells stories of good old Christian men and women who commit sins every day, but we still love and forgive them. Even when the songs are sung from the lips of the condemned, waiting on death row for the ultimate fate to befall them. There is such depth and texture in these discs that any fan will be totally satisfied with this boxed set. Buy it now!

Free Music Review: Excellent, vital anthology...
Hit: 5 Stars

Read below and you will see why British people know nothing about country music. Stick to the Beatles, okay jerky boy?

I wish I could explain what Gram Parsons did for me musically. He could very well be the reason why there is any good country music left at all. This anthology includes some of The Burrito Brothers stuff, Byrds, and plenty of old Fallen Angels tracks. This is one of those all-inclusive anthologies...I don't find myself wondering, "Why didn't they put such and such song on here?"

It is worth the money for this one if you're a fan of real country music.

Free Music Review: old music for new heads
Hit: 5 Stars

I ride a Harley.
Can't explain to most people what that's like but, then with music and this guy in particular, it's kinda the same.
I placed the cd into the machine, buying after seeing a tv programme here in the UK about the so called 'alternative country scene'...
Now I understand...
The CD is sad and the singers story is very dis-heartening-- Maybe I am getting older- maybe I don't want to hear pop music.
...Buy it because as a 'white' guy singing about 'black' times, this music is better from an underground than an overground!
