Free Music Review: A great collection of songs by an underrated band...

The Grass Roots my not receive any accolades when compared to some of the bigger heavy-hitters of the late 60's, but did that lessen their impact to us fans? Nope. Not one iota. Rob Grill -- who still tours -- and the rest of the revolving membership of the band just came along at a very critical time in America's history. Rebellion and anti-war sentiments still were very high when 'Let's Live For Today' became one of the biggest voices in a generation which if nothing else loved to express themselves via song.
I had the wonderful opportunity to play Oldies at a radio station for many years and during that time I had the supreme pleasure to not just play some of the greatest music ever recorded, but I got to meet some of the greats in the genre. Paul Revere, Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Tokens, Chubby Checker, Micky Dolenz and of course, Rob Grill of the Grass Roots. He still ranks just behind Paul Revere as one of the all-around genuinely funny performers I have ever personally seen. Rob still sings pretty dang good, too. Unlike many of the performers out there squeezing every ounce of mileage their popularity 35 years ago could muster, Rob still ranks high on my list of the all-time greats. I guess you would have to see him in concert to understand why this factors in so much of my opinion. You may disagree, but I found The Grass Roots, whether you look at the original line-up or what Rob Grill has touring these days, I'll take 'em any way I can.

Originally released in 1996. MCA.As a band the Grass Roots were always a shadowy bunch, a front for studio musicians and professional songwriters looking to get their songs on the radio. They scored 14 top 40 hits during their reign in the late '60s/early '70s and their hits were among the catchiest and most enjoyable of the AM radio era. "Let's Live for Today," "Midnight Confessions," "Bella Linda," "Two Divided by Love," and a slew of others are shameless pop made brilliant by multilayered harmonies and arrangements that liberally borrowed from folk-rock and R&B.
