Free Music Review: The Dead Live On Halloween

On a good night the Dead can journey me past the thermosphere. On an atrocious night (and there have been many such nights) they shouldn't have been permitted to secure a deal with a tire smudge on a city sidewalk let alone broker one with a record label. With Pigpen riding sidecar during this gig and tour Jerry Garcia is now the focal point. The band ushers in a new phase where their blues-rock jamming becomes more ethereal.
Jerry was always open to discovery and letting a song evolve. This is why he was sometimes an ace at improvisation. Indisputably, this spirit inhabited him on "Dark Star/Jam". This twenty three-minute plus piece is one of live music's greatest performances in any idiom. Jerry's and Phil Lesh's dual interplay is trance-inducing as they gradually mount into the jam. And when Bob Weir starts in with his two-note motif, more or less halfway into the track, it's whipped up to a state of sonic sensation. Not a second gets wasted as they segue seamlessly into a very good "Sugar Magnolia". "St. Stephen" improves as it gathers pace. But it's at the finish that lightning hits again as they're totally into the moment on their dynamite medley of "Not Fade Away/Going Down the Road Feeling Bad/Not Fade Away".
The audio quality of this now official bootleg is nothing to bellyache about and their harmonies sound good with no studio embellishment required. For these fellas and the listening public, Halloween 1971 was indeed a good night.
