Free Music Notes for Fillmore East: April 1971Free Music Review: What Joy Sounds Like on Guitar Hit: 4 StarsThis was my first Grateful Dead CD, live or otherwise. It took a few days but I soon found myself listening to this CD and this CD only. Two months later I have bought 3 more Grateful Dead CD's and its all I listen to now!The singing is a little off on this album, but the energy and amazing jams more than make up for it. On CD 3, China Cat Sunflower and I Know You Rider are amazing, and the jam session that starts on Dark Star, and goes through St. Stephen, Not Fade Away, and Going Down the Road is just too much. You can listen over and over and again and again you will catch the sound of pure joy. Wow! Check it out!
Free Music Review: classic Hit: 5 StarsIf you love the Grateful Dead you've heard it, and have it, wore it out and are on seconds.
Free Music Review: Simply the Best Hit: 5 StarsOf course, if you are a deadhead, you will want this. If you are just "getting into it", and are looking for a concert recording, look no further (well, maybe the 1970 Harpur College concert). The band is in fine form. The best songs are sung by Pigpen and driven by the rest of the band. Hard to Handle is out of this world, I have never heard a song played with such energy. The Good Lovin' jam out of the drum set is amazing, simply amazing, to hear Pigpen tell his story in song and to hear how the band backs him up. Midnight Hour is also tops. I'm a big fan of Cold Rain and Snow and the rendition here is one of their best. Many of the other songs are just great. When you listen to this, you will know what the Grateful Dead were all about.
Free Music Review: Great earlier Live Dead Hit: 4 StarsSome Dead fans separate themselves into lovers of the Pigpen era from 68-72, and then others to the late 70's era w/ Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux. For me, there is no point in trying to choose between the two periods as both are equally good and unique. Some might think that the Dead didn't fully develop their 2nd set jammin' until later in the 70's, but that would be wildly inaccurate. I have purchased about 17 or so of the Dick's Picks series and I love both the 68-72 period and the late 70's equally. This live set from two nights from the same tour shows is fantastic. I would be hard pressed to pick this one or the new Steppin' Out, but I would have to recommend the the Steppin' Out England '72 box first because it is so good, consistent and comprehensive. I would not buy "Live Dead" first, or "Europe 72". This Fillmore and the Steppin' Out are both better for sure. I do not agree with the reviewer that complained about Pigpen. His voice was not always perfect, but at times, it was outstanding in a very Allman brothers type of way and really anchored the Dead with the southern blues character. His keyboard playing was the best the Dead ever had in my opinion. Bob Weir and Jerry still anchored the other tunes well, but Donna Jean never stood out like Pigpen and I didn't think Keith's keyboards were as good. She was always just in the background and I don't know if she could have ever held up a tune on her own. She got out of control at times as well. That said, also pick up the new Dicks Picks 25 from 1978 as it along with this one are probably the best the Dead has to offer of the two periods. I absolutely love both of them. START WITH STEPPIN' OUT and DP 25(get DP25 from dead.net). But don't stop there. The Dicks Picks are fantastic. Get 18 and 10 after the two previous mentions. They are only a slight step down from DP 25 and Steppin Out UK 72.
Free Music Review: Buy the cd...just do it. Hit: 5 StarsPlease just do your self a favor and buy this item. Sure all Live Dead stuff is unfathomably amazing and trancending in every way, but this 4 discer is no exception. Of course Pigpen's vocals and keys are featured cause these were his final good days with the band. So a lot of his old shouters are there, mixed with other old favorites, and some solid covers. Disc one is pretty good, but probly my least favorite. Especially because so much of it is just drums and good lovin. It's good, but i rather discuss the three other discs. Wow, sugar magnolia, a classic, followed my loser, aint it crazy, king bee, all great tunes. The highpoint on the disc is some solid vocals on uncle j's band, followed by a long lovelight, where we hear pigpen at his best, and jerry rambles for a while. Disc three is by far my favorite. China cat-->rider seems to be on every live release, but i still love it. Sing me back home is nice. Then comes a solid cover of hard to handle, followed by the always beautiful, dark star. Then as dark star ends, the first few notes of St. Stephen begin. Wow. Then a not fade away sandwich with goin down the road in the middle. Quite a disc i must say. Disc 4 is also great. A great morning dew, then new minglewood. I love wharf rat, which follows, then of course alligator, "talk about a time when we were mutual friends". Some solid pigpen vocals. This through cold rain... is great, then a nice casey jones. Please buy this, do it for your ears who are so good to you. I bid you goodnight.
