Free Music Notes for Ladies & Gentlemen: The Grateful Dead

Free Music Review: Great Stuff; very accessable and good for newbie's (my 1st)
Hit: 5 Stars

It's pretty simple, this album is absolutly amazing. I doubt many people disagree with me. There are four discs and is a compilation of the grateful dead's 5 day show at Fillmore east.

The first cd get's you going real well with tracks like truckin', bertha, beat it down the line, the good lovin' is great on this disc, just to name a few. The 2nd is pretty amazing, with sugar magnolia, one of the coolest "wah-wah" solo's along with an explosive rythm section in the last 2 verses, this is actually Duane Allman your hearin'(if i'm not mistaken). This is followed by a completely amazing loser, altough there are better, which slows you down a bit, goes into ain't it crazy, and then slows down again with a slow el paso. Then comes Muddy Waters' I'm a king bee. Ripple, uncle john's band and again, amazing. Turn on your lovelight is a great track pigpen is very much into the groove. What follows is nothing short of perfect, china cat..i know you rider., again nothing like the '73 china>riders with the feelin' groovy jam's in between, but we're two year too early..Then you have great versions of st. steven, and the nfa is absolutely amazing. The next disc starts of with one of my fav. songs, morning dew. There is also a drum solo and jam, which is flawless. This collection is for everyone.

This was my first Live grateful dead compilation/disc/whatever. I completely loved it, it's great for an introduction. You will find, however, that when you get deeper into the vast unknown that is "the grateful dead...live" you will not pay much attention to this recording. I'd say it's a great disc, and anyone who truly appreciates music should have this, all great.

I would reccomend Dicks Picks 8 as a follow up. You should also get a good taste of primal dead (my personal fav). Two from the vault, DP22....oh and you can't go wrong with dp18.

Ladies & Gentlemen: The Grateful Dead Poster

Grateful Dead, Fillmore East: April 1971

This four-disc set documents the Dead's monumental five-night final run at New York's Fillmore East in April 1971. Coming from the same period as the live Skull and Roses album, it finds the band at its most sinewy--without second drummer Mickey Hart and without much in the way of Pigpen's keyboard work. What stands out here, beyond the intense, emotionally charged yet somewhat playful performances, is the strength and diversity of the repertoire. In addition to the plethora of newer originals, we hear a number of Pigpen's beloved blues shouters: "Next Time You See Me," "Ain't It Crazy," "I'm a King Bee," "Turn on Your Love Light," "It Hurts Me Too," "Hard to Handle," and "In the Midnight Hour." Also of note are readings of lesser-played material such as "Second That Emotion," "Ripple," "Sing Me Back Home," and "Alligator." All in all, it's a worthy celebration of one of the Dead's most legendary venues, as well as a prime slice of vintage Dead music. --Marc Greilsamer
