Free Music Notes for Ladies & Gentlemen: The Grateful Dead

Free Music Review: Groovy man
Hit: 5 Stars

Have you ever opened a puzzle, poured the pieces out on the table, and thought how could the picture on the lid be in this pile of pieces? Well this 4 CD set is like that at first, but then all the pieces start to fit and all of a sudden there is a beautiful picture. Ranging in styles from psychedelia, R&B, blues, improv jazz, bluegrass, and country, this is the Dead in all their glory. They charm with their acoustic numbers, they paint pictures with their country stories, they rock your bottom with funky R&B, make you smile out loud with their awesome bluegrass licks, and then they take your mind on a warped out space trip only to set you gently back in your living room, and this is sometimes within one 15 minute jam.

But the great thing is their ability to mesh all these styles without becoming a parody. The sincerity and reverence for these styles are what makes each live set by the Dead worth listening to. I applaud the Grateful Dead powers that be, for each release they put out, giving us the opportunity to hear them in their natural habitat. This box set, as well as all of their live CD`s shows the Dead weaving musical magic in every song, without glossing over the warts, and thus this is where the magic lies. This was a band who loved their fans and they continue to give back the love a hundredfold.

Listen, twirl, smile, cry, gasp, but most of all, enjoy the latest gift from your beloved band. Peace Jerry.

Free Music Review: A very solid 5 stars

Every Deadhead has thier personal favorite live Dead show. Maybe you were at a particular show and the recording brings back fond memories. Maybe it was a highlight of your favorite band line-up. Or maybe it has that one Jerry solo that makes your hair curl. This show however stands out as perhaps thier finest recording ever commercially released. I know it's a pretty ballsy thing to say, but one listen and you'll be carting this 4 disc set around with you wherever you go. First, the quality of the recording is flawless. The mix is perfect, it doesn't have that flat "soundboard" sound some of the Dead's tapes have. There's a real presence to the mix, like you can locate where everybody is just by listening. But that's just the beginning. The versions of the songs are some of the finest I've ever heard. Jerry's "Second That Emotion" is amazing. The jam in the middle of Pig's "Too Hard To Handle" is some of the best blues ever played by anybody. Bobby's version of "Me And My Uncle" is actually inspired. I could easily go on & on about every song in this collection, but I'd be wasting your time. Even if you think you don't need another live Dead album, you've GOT to have this one. (I actually haven't played a Dick's Picks in about a month!)

Free Music Review: The best Vaule in the world of Music Today
Hit: 5 Stars

It is safe to say the the Grateful Dead is probably one of thefew group in the world who has a 4 CD package out for around [this price]. Combined with very high quality music, there is no way to go wrong with this. The sound is crisp, clean and amazingly clear. Remember the tape are over 30 years old.On disk 3 we have one of the best versions of Hard to Handle ever produce by any group, anywhere. Pig Pens contribution to the band during this 5 Night run was priceless. The rap during Good Lovin about a man buying a women on the corner from a salesman, who has anything you need, is pure fun. Every song is tight and picture perfect. Some songs like Loser and Wharf Rat are too new for the incrediable guitar solos that formed years later, but the vocals by Garcia are sung with such passion that they are must have versions. If there is a person out there that enjoys Rock & Roll from the 60's and 70's and has not really got into the Dead, this is the one I would strongly recommend. The Dead have a balls to the wall attitude here, not the long 30 minuet jams, just tight jamming which is a little more accessible. There is no way to go wrong with this, the best vaule in the world of music today.

Free Music Review: Best ever

I mislaid my tapes of these shows years ago, so they stayed in my mind as a vague memory of something truly great. Now, released in a shiny new package (notes by blair jackson) with pristine sound quality, these shows are an absolute must have.

The band at this stage still had a spirit of adventure and a close link with their devoted following: this was pre deadheads, pre gold records, pre myth, and pre Keith Godchaux. And the Dead at this time could really kick out the jams, showing a tireless energy and inventiveness again and again.

The last CD of the four is justly famous as one of the truly legendary shows - what gets revealed here, though, is some wonderful organ flourishes from Pigpen, and a wonderful lesson in dynamics from Garcia. He did not always know when to leave notes out, but in the jam that follows Alligator, Garcia shows an exquisite touch, every note well placed.

Bill Kreutzman also shines, with a drum solo that bristles with swagger and experience. Oh so very different from the plodding beats of late era Dead.

Then there's Casey Jones! Have a listen, and discover just why this band built up its fanatical following.

Free Music Review: Ladies & Gentleman & Deadheads Of All Ages
Hit: 5 Stars

With perhaps as many as a dozen or more great albums recorded live at the famed Filmore East, (Hendrix's Band Of Gypsies, Humble Pie's Somkin', The Allman Bros Live at The Filmore East, portions of CSN&Y Four-Way Street, etc.) Ladies and Gentleman stands along side a long list of inspired performances by classic rockers. Not only was the Filmore East the absolute ultimate venue for concert-goers, in terms of atmosphere and ambiance, the sound was, as Bill Graham was fond of saying, "like a prime cut of filet minion".

With the Dick's Pix series, Live Dead, Europe '72, Bear's Choice, Without A Net, Skull & Roses, etc. There's seemingly countless live recordings available. Obviously, die-hard fans will continue to collect and savor every new release and bootleg they can get their hands on. I love this collection, in that it finds the band at their stripped down, leanest and meanest, with tons of energy, playing a a dream set of tried and true chestnuts. I'm sure there's tons more in the vaults, but I doubt there are many as good as Ladies & Gentleman. This is one for the ages.
