Free Music Notes for Ladies & Gentlemen: The Grateful Dead

Free Music Review: Ladies and Gentlemen:
Hit: 5 Stars

After careful consideration and many many hours of listening to this one and, well frankly, all the other ones..and then some, I have come to the conclusion that "Ladies and Gentlemen" is sonically the best record the Grateful Dead have released. These discs are just so warm and lovely sounding - more so than anything else in the Grateful Dead canon. The variety found on this offering is dizzying (a good thing). And while some of the playing and harmonies are a bit loose (to be polite), remember it's 1971 Grateful Dead we are talking about; they didn't become "just exactly perfect" until around 1977. And despite its few weak points (this wouldn't be a Grateful Dead album if there weren't any), there is some exemplary jamming here and a few beautiful and melancholy tunes. The Alligator>Going Down the Road>Cold Rain & Snow sequence is classic Dead, one of their most famous (among Deadheads)jams. And the Bill Graham rap memorializes Graham and the funny dynamic between the promoter, the band, and the audience - "more, more, more."

I've been listening to the Grateful Dead for quite some time now, and this 4 Disc run from Fillmore East is unbelieveable. It was everything I'd hoped for when I saw the setlist. Disc one starts off with some nice and easy jams, nothing real fast till the end with Good Lovin-->Drums-->Good Lovin'. There are great versions of Cumberland Blues, Bertha, BIODTL, one of my favorite Bird Songs. A great Disc.

Disc two is the one I listen to the least out of this set, but it still has it's moments. Uncle John's Band of course, Bob Wier does a great job on Sugar Magnolia as usual, Ripple is good, Lovelight is the highlight here.

Disc's 3 & 4 are majestic. From the opening notes of China Cat to the last strumms of We Bid you Goodnight on Disc 4 its all unbelieveable Dead. Each song is played magnificently. If you want to hear some GREAT music from a tremendous band you need this set. My review doesn't really tell how wondeful this is, you need to hear it to get the full effect. Pick this up and enjoy. Also try DP 4 & 8, they're both stellar as well.

Free Music Review: Best Dead album to be stranded on a deserted island with...?
Hit: 5 Stars

For longtime Deadheads this was a legendary run--well represented on this "highlights" compilation. These shows were on the crest of the most prolifically creative period in the band's history. Most of the tunes that would carry them for the next 24 years were in place by then. Thus, IMO the particular appeal of this release is that it serves as a terrific anthology of "essential" live Dead. I'd highly recommend it as the place to start for newcomers. For anyone looking for a thorough sampling of Dead music it is a much more accurate depiction of the GD experience than the perfunctory "best of" releases Long Strange Trip and Skeletons From The Closet (which most hardcore heads don't consider "real" Dead albums, as they were relased merely to satisfy contractual obligations), and the value is outstanding at 1/2 or less the price of most "box sets". For the more experienced Deadhead, well, other reviewers have thouroughly covered those bases, but, admit it...you're gonna buy it anyway aren't you (~);>

Free Music Review: A great piece of music
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a great collection of music from a historic run that the Dead played in 1971. The dead were greatly evoloving in the early 70's, haven gone from American blue-grass, to defining music of psychadelia of the late 60's, to a new phase which is captured here. Songs like "Birdsong" and "Bertha" were just introduced into the mix. Pigpen was probably expressing himself more than he had in before (probably in reaction to Janis Joplins recent death) and it comes out in all it's glory (one listen of the good loving tells it all!). This is not produced dead, this is raw, straight out Rock and Roll, and it doesn't get any better!

Anyone who complains on the sound quality of this needs to do two things 1) buy better stereo equipment 2) appreciate 30 year old reel recordings for the beauty they provide. This is not digital music. This is the cleanest, all out, highest damn quality of any recording possible at that time and it is great.

Free Music Review: DEAD FOR THE AGES
Hit: 5 Stars

With Pigpen still in fine form and a multitude of new songs, this actual recording looks similar to many a "dream set" this reviewer has imagined over the years. First and foremost, all of Pigpen's signature tunes are here together on one recording for the first time. Where else can you find "Lovelight," "Next Time You See Me," "King Bee," "Good Lovin'," "Hard to Handle," "It Hurts Me Too," "Alligator," and my personal favorite, "Midnight Hour," all on one excellent quality recording. This concert marks the perfect combination of raucous rock n' roll and free-flowing jams that took center stage about three years after the Fillmore East concert. I could go on to list off great song after great song, or I can simply say that IT IS ALL HERE. This is desert island Dead for sure. If you love the group or if you've never loved them before, this is the album to buy.
