Free Music Notes for Ladies & Gentlemen: The Grateful Dead

Free Music Review: Olg but Grate
Hit: 5 Stars

If you only have room for one more CD on your rack, this is it! "2-11-69", IMHO, was the best live Dead ever, but this is better. From a recording standpoint, it's almost studio quality. Not your typical Dead bootleg.(You know. The guy in the 67th row holding a mic up in the air). Musically, Jerry's at his best either out front or noodling in the background. Not a bad cut on the entire album, but my personal favorites Bird Song, Me and My Uncle, Cumberland Blues, Morning Dew and China Cat/ I Know You Rider which no Dead album is complete without. This collection is perhaps the Dead at their very best. Buy it or in Deadhead fashion tape it from a friend.

Free Music Review: Great introduction to the GD.
Hit: 5 Stars

I didn't get into the Grateful Dead heavily until recently. The main reason I think is that its my dad's favorite band. Rebellion for me was not being a hippie and listening to the Grateful Dead. However, I recently came around. My dad gave me Europe '72 and I bought this album. I know a lot of people say Europe '72 is their best live album, but I think this is even better. There is more interaction with the audience, Pigpen is great, and they play most of their most recognizable tunes from the era - its a 4-CD set without very much of their repertoire left out. This CD I think gives the listener more of a feel of the excitement of their live shows than did E72.

Free Music Review: The Other One
Hit: 5 Stars

Great songs sung and played at a peak period for this early formation of the Dead and before McKernan's untimely exit. I saw part of this concert broadcast on Public TV back in the early '70s and the performance made me a fan. Before that I thought they sounded like a poor Elvis imitation. But what did I know; I was only 16 at the time. I do prefer their earlier, rockin' version of Cold Rain and Snow, than the slower-paced version here. Also, I miss Hart's percussion and Constantin's organ and the entire band interplay on the Other One. But, those can be found on other just as respectable CDs. I'm glad this was finally released.

Free Music Review: What negative reviews?
Hit: 5 Stars

What negative reviews? This is the best live set the Dead have released since the limited edition Terrapin Stn. 4 disc set. This is unbelievable. Deadheads--wake up--you are sick of cowboy songs? Too bad. The Dead liked 'em and there are a couple on almost every live set they've put out. At least this time they rock out.
Disc 3 has got to be in my all time top 5 favorite Dead discs period. Studio, bootleg, Dicks Picks, whatever. If you aren't stoned or dosed and actually at a show, sometimes the way big jams aren't what you thought you remembered them to be. Not here--everything on this set in the top notch. GET THIS.

Free Music Review: Finally!
Hit: 5 Stars

There are so many Dead recordings out there. Bootlegs, CDs, Box Sets,Dick's Picks (19,wow--keep em'comming), etc. They range from fair to exceptional. With very few being exceptional. This one is exceptional. It should be purchased immediately by anyone who loves the Dead, especially those of you who loved their shows. Honestly, if I could only have one recording, this would be it. If you miss Jerry, his wonderful voice, his unique, mystical way of playing the guitar, you are in for a treat. I cannot wait to take it snowboarding in the Spring. I just wish it were in route from a Spring Tour.
