Free Music Notes for The Golden Road (1965 - 1973) AlbumFree Music Review: OK, I sprung. OK, I listened, but ... Hit: 4 Stars
(...) Most of this collection is wonderful. Yes, it's high quality production _ Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, two of the greatest albums ever recorded, have never sounded better. Nor has Skull and Roses or Europe 72. All have been among my favorites for 30 years. But if you're like me, I'm not sure you need this, even with the enhanced quality. If you've just started listening to the Dead (Jerry's death has made them more popular than ever) this is a wonderful collection to own. I think the earliest stuff is funny _ some producer tried to get them to sound like one of the second-rate British invasion bands. Then they figured out they were better and far more original and we got some of the best music ever written or played. Make up your own mind. It's a great introduction for someone just getting into the group. But if you're a deadhead ... You probably don't need it.
