Free Music Notes for The Golden Road (1965 - 1973)Free Music Review: Long Live the Dead +++ Hit: 5 Stars
Even if NOT even close to the Live Dead -- hoping to have the most of the best of the Grateful Dead on CD -- I got this great box-set of a dozen CDs with many musical hours of the best years of the Dead. Well-and-good indeed, this box-set has a great musical quantity and quality their very special MELLOW BLEND -- kinda like blues, jazz, country, acid with soft rock. The box-set is sturdy and artistic, with a generous background booklet inside, along with a dozen oh-so-smooth CDs of the first [for me the best] years of the Dead -- like '65 to '73 [circa the COOL Sixties]. Even if NOT even close to the Live Dead -- zone-out via hours-and-hours of the GOLDEN YEARS OF THE DEAD +++
Free Music Review: All Praise Rhino Records! Hit: 5 Stars
This is the Box Set that all future Box Sets need to be measured against. Rhino have gone above and beyond the call of duty with this set. In one word: Incredible! The book is awesome with tons of tidbits about the Grateful Dead. Each digipack CD is a gorgeous reproduction of the original releases. The digital re-mastering brings out every intonation of the Dead's music. The music has never sounded sooooo good! A must have for every Grateful Dead fan and for anyone who just likes music that is packaged together in a glorious Box Set. Record companies, please look at what Rhino has done, and try to do things similar. Although, I doubt anyone will be able to beat this one!
Free Music Review: Absolutely Essential For Music Lovers Hit: 5 Stars
This box set is this Dead fan's dream come true. It seems that most everything you would want to know about the Grateful Dead's Warner Bros. tenure is included. There is a profusely illustrated 60-page essay by Dennis McNally that wonderfully illuminates the early history of the Dead. Oh, yeah-and the music. No need to go into detail here, but suffice it to say that this is one hot ticket for physical and mystical adventures for an eternal moment. I hope that the other eras of thier career recieve the same loving treatment expressed in future boxed sets like this one. God love ya Jerry & Co. And thank you Rhino for your intrepid trips into our shared aural experience!
Free Music Review: This is it ! Hit: 5 Stars
The Dead's studio material has always been under-appreciated when compared to their live releases. Is it justified ? Probably. The Dead were always better in a live setting, but the studio stuff is still essential. When Rhino chose to release this 1st box, they satisfied both camps. The original studio albums with TONS of previously unreleased live material. I find myself programming the CD player to stop after each original studio disc , getting a beverage of choice , and then tracking the bonus material. Totally different listening experiences. This makes me appreciate , even more , just what quality those studio releases had.
Free Music Review: Treasure chest for the Dead's journey on "The Golden Road" Hit: 5 Stars
I cannot imagine how "The Golden Road (1965-1973)" could be improved. It is quite simply a perfect treasure chest chronicling this portion of the Dead's journey. The packaging, booklets, etc. are beautiful and would be worth the price of the set, even without the music, which, of course, is beyond value. From the first chord of Gordon Lightfoot's Early Morning Rain," on "Birth of the Dead" through the last chord of "Sitting on Top of the World," a bonus track to "Bear's Choice," this is fifteen hours of memories and surprises that will make any Deadhead smile, smile, smile ...
