Free Music Review: OK, I sprung. OK, I listened, but ...

(...) Most of this collection is wonderful. Yes, it's high quality production _ Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, two of the greatest albums ever recorded, have never sounded better. Nor has Skull and Roses or Europe 72. All have been among my favorites for 30 years.
But if you're like me, I'm not sure you need this, even with the enhanced quality. If you've just started listening to the Dead (Jerry's death has made them more popular than ever) this is a wonderful collection to own. I think the earliest stuff is funny _ some producer tried to get them to sound like one of the second-rate British invasion bands. Then they figured out they were better and far more original and we got some of the best music ever written or played.
Make up your own mind. It's a great introduction for someone just getting into the group. But if you're a deadhead ...
You probably don't need it.

I love the Grateful Dead. Those who are into this band and who prefer the live recordings will probably buy it if they do not already own live tapes of the period.Those who bought the studio albums in the late sixties and early seventies and replaced vinyl with CD probably will not want to spend this much money on the set.
As a product the quality is high and the packaging is very nice and it is very attractive. For collectors and completists it is especially nice to have. Maybe though for most of the people who remain avid or deadicated fans this set is a distraction.
Good gift idea for kids to buy their granparents who were around at the time.
Now I am showing my age.

If you already have most of these releases on CD, this collection will not add much to your collection that is new. The bonus tracks are mostly alternate studio versions of the same songs that are already on the CD, and do not add much else. I don't find myself greatly appreciating the remastered sound and essays and pictures are not why I buy Grateful Dead CDs. What we need is more fantastic music from concerts, CDs like Phil Zone, or Ladies and Gentlemen...
