Free Music Notes for Grease (Original 1978 Motion Picture Soundtrack)Free Music Review: Grease Was My Word Hit: 5 Stars
The soundtrack to Grease is actually one of the five albums that changed my life. When I was a tee weeny little boy, this soundtrack and the film were the first real adult type of fare that I came across which actually affected me in any way. T
he film was so exciting to me I made every relative I had take me to see it claiming I had never seen it before. My Aunt and I listened to it on my Grandma's big record player in the living room - one of those things that look like a cabinet but actually house a record player and in Grandma Ferlie's case an 8 track player. Then I made my mom buy me the 8-track for myself.
I sang every song as if it were my own and as if I knew what half the words meant. "Summer Nights", "You're The One That I Want", "Greased Lightning" - not to mention the 1,2 punch of sassy pants Rizzo with her teaser "Look At Me I'm Sandra Dee" and "There Are Worse Things I Could Do", plus the Sha Na Na whole middle of 50's dance music, and the Cindy Bullens sung "It's Raining On Prom Night", "Freddy My Love" and "Mooning" from the original play (which I didn't even know existed at the time). The soundtrack to Grease made me grow up and to this day I still get sucked in to both the flick and the soundtrack and it made me a life long Livvie fan.
Plus my very first ever time performing live was as a 6 year old kid getting up with a live band and singing the duet "You're The One That I Want" as a solo - yeah I was cool like Zuko.
Free Music Review: A wonderful soundtrack album Hit: 5 Stars
The musical Grease, like West Side Story, is based loosely on the theme of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, so we have the theme of opposing gangs, and the storyline of boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back. The movie of the musical is a wonderful seventies take on a fifties theme and I would imagine that most people who enjoyed the movie-- and there must be millions of them-- would also enjoy this CD.You have quite a variety of performers here. Olivia Newton John, with her crystal-pure voice sings the movie's greatest hit Hopelessly Devoted To You, and then you have her in duets with John Travolta, who also has some solo numbers nicely done with an adolescent break in his voice that belies his maturity at the time of the recording. Also from the movie are a couple of songs by Stockard Channing, one of which, There Are Worse Things I Could Do (Than Have A Boy Or Two) is one of my great favorites, even though it is rather short. Then you have a bunch of period fifties rock and doo-wop songs by top artists like Frankie Avalon and Sha Na Na. Almost all the songs are enjoyable and very well recorded. It really is one of the best, probably THE best, soundtrack albums you can get, better even than Dirty Dancing, which is also a favorite of mine. Wonderful music for driving in the car, listening to while you do the housework, or just about anything else.
Free Music Review: So much 50s fun in one CD!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I never, ever liked soundtracks. Because I usually never liked enough songs from movies!!! GREASE, though, is an exception! I bought it because I am part of the ensemble in a local production.
There are so many gems! We have the fun ones: Summer Nights, Greased Lightning, Born to Hand Jive, We Go Together. These are famous! But, there's also one gem from the Boradway version: Rock N' Roll PArty Queen, sung by Louis St. Louis.
There are also pretty, soulful songs: Sandy, There are Worse Things I Could Do. John Travolta and Stockard Channing add so much emotion to their "too cool for school" characters. I think many women could relate to Stockard's ballard- it isn't just for the "trashy and no good" girl of the 50s. However, don't skip over It's Raining on Prom Night, sung by the wonderful Cindy Bullens. This is a cute, sweet song about a girl whose prom night has been ruined by "the cruel force of nature from the blue".... "and the Asiatic flu". Poor thing, she "don't even have my coursage oh geez. It fell down the sewer with my sister's ID."
Finally, Those Magic Changes is an upbeat, touching love song about a teenager who is reminded of his love whenever he hears their song.
This CD is perfect for parties, boring nights, nostalgia, and work-outs. Chang chang changity chang shoo bop!
Free Music Review: I Own The LP And If You Love Fun Music, You'll Love The CD Hit: 5 Stars
Seen the movie, loved it, own the LP, love it too. Are you a Frankie Valli fan? Or one of John Travolta or Olivia Newton-John? Then you'll love this CD packed with fun pop/rock songs as well as some romantic music. Just to give you an idea of how popular this music is, the song (sang by John Travolta and Olivia Newton John) "You're The One That I Want" went number ONE and several other tunes, namely "Hopelessly Devoted To You" sang By Olivia, "Summer Nights" sang by Olivia and John, "Greased Lightnin" sang by John, "Grease" sang by Frankie Valli, all did great on the charts. You also get performances by Sha Na Na and Stockard Channing, plus songs by other cool artists. There are 3 songs performed by Olivia and John together, two by John himself, and two by Olivia by herself. You get funky music, romantic tunes, and pop rock. This is great music to sing along too. Great for 70's parties, and music without cursing like you hear in much of the stuff today. You know it's really interesting, of all the music and movies ever put out, the ones that made the most money were ones without alot of profanity. This is a CD the whole family can listen to and enjoy. The music has a 50's slant to it, though it was released in the 70's. My Shibani also loves this CD as well as the movie.
Free Music Review: Always a Classic Hit: 5 Stars
I've had this album since 1997, back when my school's chorus class was singing some selections from the musical. I wanted to get an idea as to how the songs went so I bought the tape and played it non-stop all spring.
Being someone who likes the old doo-wop sound, this was an instant hit with me. I not only learned the gist of the songs for my chorus concert but also found the melodies stuck in my head during class, at home, even on the baseball diamond.
Since then I've always associated the album with the spring and usually bring my old tape out every year for at least a few weeks every spring. The songs never grow old and have the same freshness to them year after year. It brings back memories not only of the spring of 1997, but also now that I've gone through high school myself the feelings that I used to have back in those magical four years of my life. It's like a fun trip down memory lane--and with good vocals to boot.
While some may prefer the original versions of some of the actual 1950s standards to the remakes on here (Blue Moon, for example), these are well done and are in authentic 1950s style. Franki Valli is a bonus.
