Free Music Notes for Greatest Hit (...and 21 other pretty cool songs)Free Music Review: Decent introduction to the band Hit: 3 StarsI am a long time Dream Theater fan who began to lose interest in the band with Six Degrees, since at that point it seemed like they were making long songs just to be long, and it was more about instrumental wizardry than songwriting.
Recently, I have rarely been listening to the band - but I picked this up since I wanted to see how these songs stood up now, many years later.
First, this set does contain almost all of their great songs (note, nothing from Systematic Chaos or When Dream and Day Unite - I assume rights/permissions issues , or from any of their many live albums).
If you have heard much from the band, then this is a decent introduction. However, I don't like the separation of the 'dark' (heavier) and 'light' (the less heavy) - makes the 'light' side difficult to get through.
Portnoy does hint that there should have been a third side - the epic side - and I agree. At they very least, they should have found space for their best epic - A Change of Seasons. other songs missing are Surrounded, 6:00, Space Dye Vest, Burning My Soul, among others. They could have found space, Disc 2 is about 50 minutes, so there was space left over for additional songs.
So, in the end, a decent set, but mainly for new or 'lapsed' fans like me.
Free Music Review: For 15 Dollars You Can't Go Wrong Hit: 5 StarsI Love Compilations Because They Give A Little Taste Of A Bands Catalog. And This Compilation Is Just That. This Set Includes Alternate Versions Of The Original Albums Tracks (Remixes,Edits,B-Sides,Alternate Takes). This Double Disc Album Is The Price Of Most Single Disc Albums That Is a Deal If You Ask Me.
Free Music Review: If you like DT, you must have it but if you don't know their music this album will show you who they are Hit: 5 StarsThis is an album that all the DT fans must have, and also the people who likes their music, it shows two sides of the band, one is the smooth (white) side full of pretty songs and the other one is the progressive and metal side (dark)very powerfull and atonishing, you will enjoy it a lot!!!
Free Music Review: Great Compilation... but not a Best Of. Hit: 5 StarsFirst, I have to comment on another review that I read. They basically say that a compilation like this doesn't do the music justice because it takes away from the story of the full albums. Would you then say that when DT plays a concert they should only play sets that are put together like a full record? No... it's about hearing the different songs that you love from one of the greatest bands ever!!
That being said, I would have liked to have seen this include such songs as "The Mirror", "Burning My Soul", "Take Away My Pain", "The Way It Used To Be", "Under A Glass Moon", "Blind Faith", "Constant Motion", "This Dying Soul" and maybe even the previously released live versions of "Fortune In Lies" and "Another Hand - The Killing Hand"
But I guess we can't have it all. A collection of all b-sides and unreleased songs would be a nice treat though!!!
Overall, it's still 5 stars. There's not a single bad song on there.
Bravo
