Free Music Notes for 21st Century BreakdownFree Music Review: A very near tie in greatness to "American Idiot"... Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this album the day it came out, because I knew it was going to be another outstanding release from an outstanding band. But, I (as well as several other million fans) have such a high expectation of this band, that its totally ridiculous to expect great all of the time. Yes people "American Idiot" was groundbreaking and one of the best releases of 2004, but their NOT gods people, their flesh and blood, like you and I. I don't fault them for making another rock-opera. If this is the direction they want to take in their careers, that is fine with me, I'll keep buying their albums. If they produce a more 'normal' album in a couple of years, I'll buy that too. I've liked this band since their "Kerplunk!" days, and my fondness of them and their music will probably never change. Their inspired by a little more than a lot of the 'typical' rock/punk bands out there, so yeah they've became a little more political, and in some ways, mature. Their not young anymore and to me, their writing and producing how they see the current state of America. The next time you insult them for being too much of something, stop and think about the rest of the world of music and see what their doing/writing about, and then take a look at the garbage in our musical landscape, and realize that Green Day at least stays relevant. Also, don't forget, the freedoms we enjoy in America that allowed Green Day to produce great works such as "Dookie" and "American Idiot".
If Amazon had a rating of more than five stars, I'd give Green Day at least 10 or more for this album. Keep up the great music Green Day and I hope you come to Hawaii someday, since that's where I live. I can't wait to see what their next album will bring us, I just hope they don't wait so darn long this time.
Free Music Review: An Album For Aging Rockers Hit: 5 Stars
I fell into Green Day by recently taking my son to a live performance (yes, I somehow missed them for, oh, 20 years). I was taken by the show and purchased "21st Century Breakdown" as a result.
This is an incredible work. Recognizing that, as a 50+ rocker weaned on the Beatles, the Who and Pink Floyd among others, my lens on this album is probably quite different from devoted Green Day fans who have followed them for years. I have little basis of comparison with their past (and note that in reviews I have sensed that some pine for Green Day's punkier roots, but I am comfortable saying I have not heard such a complete CD in nearly 30 years.
I find it engagingly melodic, jarringly surprising and, above all, wholly original. Here, Green Day moves effortlessly between pop, wall-of-sound rock, and beautfilu ballads. The album's richness is its diversity and its cohesion despite moving deftly across (even within, as with "Before the Lobotomy") styles.
Musically, this is a worthy successor to loosely themed albums like "Abbey Road" (listen for Lennon in the pretty "Last Night on Earth" and the frenetic "Restless Heart Syndrome")and "Dark Side of the Moon."
I also enjoyed he transposition of dark-as-night lyrics with poppy melodies ("Last of the American Girls"). Is there such a thing as a whimsical apocalypse? I can almost see Billy Joe Armstrong smiling wryly.
I tend to believe that, if there is a message in this, it is that in the jumble of modern (or any) socirty, only love makes sense. Maybe in making such a statement, Green Day has grown up, philosophically as well as musically.
Open yourself to that journey.
Free Music Review: The Best Hit: 5 Stars
I've been a Green Day fan since "39/smooth." That's right, "39/smooth" the single, even before "1,039 smoothed out slappy hours" was released. Green Day got me through high school, college and several crappy jobs. I'm 28 now and Green Day is part of who I am. I didn't like Warning as an album although Macy's Day Parade is still one of my favorite GD songs. And I think the reason that American Idiot was breath of fresh air was because it was in fact the follow up to Warning. Let's be honest, other than Good Riddance, Nimrod didn't do very well as an album either. By the time music video for Redundant came out, the band was no longer in the spotlight, instead fading away into the quiet corner where so many bands have gone to. Then they released Warning which basically secured their spot in the punk rock wall of has-beens. Who would've thought that the three Oakland boys would shape up, put on mascara and show up four years later with a big F**k you Mr.Bush attitude? NOT ME! GD would still have had a special place in my heart, but I thought it was over for them. Another case of Bad Religion or Offspring. After an amazing run of hits and singles off American Idiot, the boys disappeared for a bit. At this point I'm thinking, ok, good for them, but what's next? How can they possibly top AI?
Long story short, they did. Maybe not as much in the public eye because believe it or not, the industry has changed so much from 2004 to 2009. 21st CBD was the perfect gift that GD could've given me for following them all my life and believing in their music. This is what a real relationship is. Fans grow up and get old along with their idols, thus doing life together.
Thank you Green Day.
Free Music Review: Everyone's a critic Hit: 5 Stars
The beauty of these reviews is that anyone can write one. Although I would love to address the unfairness of some previous ones, I also want to let readers know why this is a 5-star cd.
Firstly, this is another advance in the musical maturity of one of the best rock bands of this era. Sure, it is another "themed" album like American Idiot, but the subject involves the overwhelming complications of even trying to have a personal relationship in this uncertain world in the early 21st century. American Idiot was more political, this is more personal; but the two cannot really be separated. Boy, that sounds really pseudo-intellectual.
Secondly, the thing rocks. Just listen to The Static Age, Peacemaker, or American Eulogy as loud as you can stand, and tell me it's not the best stuff you have heard in a long time. Or just listen to all 70 minutes straight through--wow.
Thirdly, what's wrong with being political? This is important stuff, and these guys are telling what they think. I think great rock is always political. Listen to the lyrics and you might just learn something. Heck, might as well criticize the Beatles, especially John. OR U2. OR Springsteen. Rock IS political, and it doesn't skew to the right. You don't like the politics, turn off the music and listen to Rush...
Lastly, this is not a rock opera. A Rock Opera is Tommy, where there a multiple parts and a plot, etc., or even The Wall. This is more like Dark Side of the Moon or The Rising or Sgt. Pepper--a themed album where every song is loosely connected.
Even those people who gave this 2 or 3 stars are going to be listening to it again and again!
Free Music Review: Punk goes through puberty Hit: 5 Stars
Of course there were high hopes for this album. It's frickin Green Day. But when I popped this CD in my player and listened to it for the first time, I can whole-heartedly say that I was 'satisfied.' Soon after 10 songs I was bobbing my head and drumming on my steering wheel. This is Green Day doing songs that Green Day does best.
This album is set up like a play; it has 3 "acts" and a total of 18 great songs and 0 bad ones. They utilize a technique where they start a song quietly, making you turn up your player, then blasts out their catchy guitar riffs. The only problems I could have with this album is that some of the songs sound a bit too familiar, but when I buy a Green Day album it's because I want to hear Green Day, not Green Day playing something I'm not expecting.
Favorite songs would have to be 21st Century Breakdown, East Jesus Nowhere, Viva La Gloria, Before The Labotomy and Last Of The American Girls
Least favorite: Know Your Enemy (it's just a stupid song), Restless Heart Syndrome (too slow, lacking replay value.)
All in all, this is a cheap album so if you have doubts, just get it anyway. If you hate it you can resell it on here and get [...] bucks back. If you like it, like I did, it will make a great addition to your Green Day collection. If this is your frist Green Day CD, go back to Dookie and work your way into this one. Report back in 5 years when you fully understand what these guys are about, and not what the media has played them out to be.
