Free Music Notes for 21st Century BreakdownFree Music Review: Better than I though. Hit: 5 Stars
Like many other people in my age range, Dookie was one of the first albums I owned. I've always loved Green Day, and each time they put out an album, I'm at the store that day buying it. Let's get something straight..... everyone knows that "die-hard Green Day fans" are going to slam this album. They could have produced an album that sounded like Dookie to the T and people would still slam it. Bottom line.... when I first listened to it, I was like "This cd is alright." So I gave it a better chance and listened to it a few more times. It definately grew on me. Unlike most people, I am a fan of bands evolving and trying concept-type albums (like Mastodon's Crack The Skye and Face to Face's Ignorance Is Bliss). I have grown to really love this cd. I don't think it sounds anything like a continuation of American Idiot either; like a read in a few reviews. This album has far more slower and experimental tracks. My favorites so far are 21st Century Breakdown, See the Light, The Static Age and Murder City. When you first listen to this album, please have an open mind. Don't expect the same sound as American Idiot, or any of their previous albums; although it haas some similar parts. I'm just sick of people nagging about bands changing. It's going to happen whether you like it, or not. I can't think of one long-standing band who hasn't evolved in some way, or changed their style throughout their careers. So cut everyone a break, keep you B.S. to yourself and give it a shot.
Free Music Review: Just Keeps Going Hit: 5 Stars
Listening to this album track by track really fires you up, these are songs with attitude, driving beats, nice changes in tempo, and that Green Day sense of harmony and hook heavy songs leading into powerful chorus'. This is a CD with quite a few singles plus a few destined to be fan favorite album tracks. The fact that they are often labled as punk rock is a silly conclusion, they have much more melody and song writing sense than your average true punk band. And they have a few ballads sprinkled in here and there. So many tend to judge them as a sellout or "Scene kid band" or whatever, the whole this is a non-issue...they are just one of the great hard rock bands out there today.
Love "Before The Lobotomy", "Christians Inferno", "21 Guns"...part III is just the CD getting stronger to me with "Horshoes...", then another fav in "Static Age".. and like I said just about every song on here is uplifting hard rock of some kind to get your heart thumping and hits emotional chords deep inside you that can make you think about things, enjoy an evening alone, or just at least make you feel like getting out there and making the most of life. Maybe that's what a punk band does too, it's perhaps all the same and in the eye of the beholder what you get out of this, but to me there really can't be any denying how great the songs contained on this CD are.
Free Music Review: Fact: Opinions can be wrong. Green Day outdid themselves again. Hit: 5 Stars
Opinions are like you-know-whats (everyone's got one), but it's not difficult to say those who proclaim this 69-minute masterpiece is anything short of great are, simply put, dead wrong. The "American Idiot II" argument is trite - if it ain't broke why fix it, and with so much variety in the 18 tracks this go-round you really can't find ANYTHING different? The "no memorable tracks" argument is made by those who refuse to look for them for whatever reason. At any one time I could have six to eight different melodies from this effort stick in my mind - my fave tracks so far are Peacemaker, Murder City, Restless Heart Syndrome (this year's Boulevard if they single it), and Horseshoes & Handgrenades... Is this album 100% perfection? Well, the first time I heard "Hysteria... Mass Hysteria" I thought it sounded like an amateurish off-Broadway number. I thought Good Riddance was the WORST track on Nimrod, but the slower tracks here really work for me, though I get the feeling 21 Guns will get massively overplayed and kill it for me. If I gave grades for the GD albums from 1-100 (to give you perspective on my opinion) I give 1,039 (comp) 89, Kerplunk 88, Dookie 92, Insomniac 92, Nimrod 95, Warning 90, American Idiot 97... 21st Century BD gets 98 (so far). There's too much to like, so for the haters, get over it, open your mind and enjoy this incredible album!
Free Music Review: not your old school Green Day.. Hit: 5 Stars
Ok, I've been a fan of Green Day since they came on the scene, and I've loved every album they have produced. When I bought this CD, I was expecting the old Green Day, which is tremendous. Instead, I felt like I had gotten a whole new band. I even checked the cd cover to see if I had even gotten the right band because it sounded so different! To tell you the truth, I even shelved it for a while and did not give it a chance. Fast forward to the release of "Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen", and I heard "21 Guns" on the soundtrack(another excellent album, by the way). This song is so good that it will stay in your head..lol. I took it out and started listening to the CD, and now I can't stop listening to it. "American Eulogy" sounds like the old Green Day, and is excellent. The first thing I really notice about some of the songs was how piano-dominated they are. It kind of reminds me of the old school 80's ballads with a good mix of classic Green Day. I've seen a lot of complaining about the politic message that the band is trying to send through the album. Don't let this scare you. To be perfectly honest, most of the Green Day lyrics are difficult to understand anyway. So I must of missed them..lol. I will say if your a fan of Green Day in the past, give this album some time to grow on you and you'll never put it down.
Free Music Review: The best POP album I own... Hit: 5 Stars
Pretty much every song on this album is fantastic pop music. The standouts are Viva La Gloria, After The Lobotomy, Peacemaker, and Murder City for me. The only songs I am really indifferent about are Christian's Inferno, Own Worst Enemy, and Horseshoes and Handgrenades. I found them to be fluff.
Alright, one thing that bothers me is that people characterize Green Day with Punk Rock. I only know of two true punk songs that Green Day has done since Dookie, Panic on Insomniac and St. Jimmy on American Idiot. They are a lot more pop rock than punk rock. Let's make that clear. Green Day is around to sell albums and make money and after listening to almost every song on this album, I hear the cash registers chinging...
Green Day should get a solid 5 or 6 singles out of this one and will make millions, good for them. This is not a punk rock album, this is a pop rock album. Please don't complain that "Green Day has soldout, etc, etc." They have always been "sellouts." The first time I ever heard of them was when I was 12 and Dookie came out and singles were all over the radio. Isn't that the definition of "selling out?"
In conclusion, don't bring any prejudice to this album and enjoy it for its bubble gum poppy goodness that it is.
