Free Music Review: Green Day's Masterpieces
Hit: 5 Stars

Since each song is deserving of a review of its own, I decided to rate each track individually. I hope you come to the conclusion that International Superhits! is a superb album, and if you haven't already purchased it, realize that it would be a wise decision to do so.

Maria. 7/10. I love the intro to this song, it's the perfect beginning for Green Day's "Hits" album. The song is good, not excellent by any means...simply not up to Green Day's caliber, but a decent listen all the same.

Poprocks & Coke. 8/10. I really like this song. The instrumentals are excellent, although the lyrics are a bit elementary. The track as a whole is very solid and a great "new" addition to the album.

Longview. 10/10. Words can't describe what an incredible song "Longview" is. This song made Green Day into what they are today: the most popular, talented, and enduring pop-punk band in the world. Mike Dirnt's bass solo in "Longview" is legendary, and the lyrics are sharp, witty, and all in all, "Longview" is Green Day in a nutshell.

Welcome to Paradise. 8/10. Another "Dookie" hit, "Welcome to Paradise" is an exceptional punk song that made Green Day so popular. It's very catchy - just an excellent song in general.

Basket Case. 9/10. You won't be able to listen to this song without immediately hitting "repeat" once it ends. Only Green Day could pull off a song like this, and yet they make it sound so easy. A "Dookie" gem.

When I Come Around. 9/10. Probably the most bubbly, pop song from "Dookie," "When I Come Around" is a simple, catchy track that showcases all of what Green Day has to offer. This song also made Woodstock '94 into Green Day's monumental arrival on the pop scene.

She. 8/10. A deeper and more mature song than most of Green Day's tracks, "She" is a brilliant track that gets better with every listen.

J.A.R. 7/10. Although "Insomniac" is my favorite Green Day album, I'm just not a big fan of "J.A.R." Mike Dirnt is the greatest bassist alive, but incomparable to Billie Joe when it comes to lyrical talent (Dirnt wrote the lyrics for "J.A.R."). The song is decent, but nothing exceptional.

Geek Stink Breath. 10/10. My favorite Green Day song of all time. A much angrier and darker track than anything from "Dookie," "Geek Stink Breath" has driving guitar riffs and talks about a drug habit that is a bit out of control. You will never get tired of listening to this.

Brain Stew. 10/10. Another perfect track, "Brain Stew" is just classic Green Day, displaying Billie Joe's lyrical genius, and the guitar expertise that both Billie and Mike possess. Tre Cool's drumming is showcased exceptionally well in "Brain Stew," and makes the song into yet another rock masterpiece.

Jaded. 6/10. I hate to say it, but I usually skip over this song. It's a hyper and quick track, and I'm sure that most Green Day fans love it, but I'm just not one of them.

Walking Contradiction. 8/10. Such a catchy track. You won't be able to get this song out of your head. The lyrics are top notch and if you want to know what Green Day music is all about, just listen to "Walking Contradiction."

Stuck With Me. 6/10. Not one of my favorite songs. There's just nothing that really stands out about this track, it could have been done by Simple Plan and been just as effective. "Stuck With Me" is not up to Green Day's potential.

Hitchin' A Ride. 7/10. When you first hear this song, you can't get enough of it, but after many, many times of listening to "Hitchin' A Ride," you will tire of it. It's a great song, but just not one of the best.

Good Riddance (Time of Your Life). 10/10. There's really no need to review this track, because I'm sure everyone has heard it a number of times and has created their own judgment about it...but here goes: "Good Riddance" is, quite simply, one of the greatest musical recordings ever made. This track singlehandedly transformed Billie Joe from a goofy punk-rocker into a talented and accomplished songwriter. Even though we've all heard the song hundreds of times, we would all, happily, listen to it one more time.

Redundant. 7/10. Even though "Redundant" was one of Green Day's top hits, I still don't think it deserves a place on this album. It was one of the weakest tracks on "Nimrod," and remains as one of my least favorite Green Day songs.

Nice Guys Finish Last. 8/10. Much like "Walking Contradiction," "Nice Guys Finish Last" is one of the silliest and most fun Green Day songs. It's a catchy track that is easy to like.

Minority. 6/10. I love the beginning of this song, with Billie Joe's guitar solo, but everything just goes downhill from there. "Minority" just seems so amateur for a band like Green Day. With that said, it is still a good song that deserves a listen.

Warning. 9/10. Even though it is the title track for Green Day's allegedly "weakest" album, "Warning" is still a track that you'll never get sick of.

Waiting. 8/10. "Waiting" is Green Day's most "pop" song to date. Billie Joe's voice sounds amazing, and Tre Cool's drumming is really displayed very nicely. It's a pop song, but it's good.

Macy's Day Parade. 9/10. What a haunting song. Billie Joe's voice is flawless throughout this serious and thought-provoking ballad. "Macy's Day Parade" is an exceptional track that you won't easily forget.

Green Day: International Superhits! 8/10

Free Music Review: Just the Hits
Hit: 5 Stars

First of all, if you're just getting into Green Day, this is a great album to have, because it shows off all of the sides of their music, and how it has progressed through the years. Their songs are fun, catchy, and very easy to like.

1. Maria- While I admit that I started laughing the first time I heard the introduction, it really is a great way to start off a song. "Maria" is one of two brand-new tracks on the CD, and goes into some political lyrics. (Some foreshadowing, perhaps?) Not their best song, but certainly not bad.

2. Poprocks and Coke- Really, the song has nothing to do with either poprocks or Coke, but the instruments are toned down, it has a nice melody, and is the second of two new songs on the disc.

3. Longview- The song that pushed Green Day into the mainstream, "Longview" is a great track with exceptional bass work by Mike Dirnt, inventive lyrics, and a good melody.

4. Welcome to Paradise- More great bass work, especially in the bass and later bass/guitar solos by Mike and lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong. Tempo changes and and good melody make this a solid track.

5. Basket Case- Probably one of my favorite Green Day songs. The lyrics are witty, it has a great melody, and I love how the drums and bass come in halfway through the first chorus. Also great drum work by Tre Cool.

6. When I Come Around- Probably one of the first Green Day songs I heard, I loved it then and still do now. The instruments aren't as hardcore as in some of their other songs, but there is no doubt that the performance of this at Woodstock '94 made them very popular.

7. She- Deeper lyrics than some of thier other early songs, "She" shows us what a mature songwriter Billie Joe can be. The song is quite good, too.

8. J.A.R.- The only track on the CD not penned by Billie Joe (it was written by Mike). While his lyrics may not be as inventive, it is by no means a bad song, and the ending with the bass accompaniment is great.

9. Geek Stink Breath- I have to commend Green Day for writing a song with lyrics this deep and about a subject this serious. The song is about a bad drug habit, and it certainly would convince anyone to stay off of them. Ambitious, but certainly well done.

10. Brain Stew- The instrumentals in this are great, and Billie Joe's changed his voice a bit, but it fits the song and it is very catchy.

11. Jaded- This song tops out at about a minute and a half. Probably the most traditional punk song on the album, short and hyper fast, but it can get tiring just listening to it.

12. Walking Contradiction- The lyrics of this song are wonderful, very inventive, and it showcases what the band is about.

13. Stuck With Me- This song has a good melody, and while some of the lyrics may not be quite as original as other songs, it has a good sound and is very singable.

14. Hitchin a Ride- Another song with great lyrics, it also boasts a good guitar solo and an interesting melody.

15. Time of Your Life (Good Riddance)- Probably the song that most people have heard without realizing who it's actually sung by. This song truly shows what a great, meaningful songwriter Billie Joe can be, and even though it sounds nothing like most of their other stuff, you can't help but love it.

16. Redundant- It has great guitar melodies and the chorus has a good sound, some more good lyrics, too.

17. Nice Guiys Finish Last- I never heard the song before I bought the album, but it's now one of my favorites. Great melody, catchy, fun, and a really good song.

18. Minority- I love the infusion of accordian/harmonica into this song, and the live version is even better. My mom says it sounds like an "Irish drinking song," but I first heard it when I was 12, and I liked it then, and even remembered the words four years later when I hadn't heard it since.

19. Warning- Another catchy song with great lyrics, it isn't as "punk" or heavily instrumentated as some of their earlier songs, but it's still great.

20. Waiting- Probably different than any other song on here, certainly "poppier," it still has a great melody and the instruments are good, too.

21. Macy's Day Parade- A very quiet song for Green Day, it is another of my new favorites. Billie Joe's voice sounds incredible when there are no instruments competing with it, and it's another example of good, mature, songwriting.

Free Music Review: Taking Punk into the 90's
Hit: 5 Stars

"Do you have the time to listen to me whine
About nothing and everything, all at once?"

With that opening salvo from "Basket Case," Green Day perfectly encapsulated what it was like to be a teen in the 90's. Critics may have complained that Billie Jo and company were little more than pale imitations of the Ramones, Buzzcocks or the Damned, but if you were under the age of 16, those bands were something your Aunt and Uncle were into during college might they have been rebellious enough. Besides, every disenfranchised teen needs someone to tell them life sucks, your parents are stifling you and school is just holding you down. With "Dookie," Green Day said it perfectly and to the tune of over 10 million albums sold.

Given that the charts were being dominated by the likes of Mariah Carey and Michael Bolton, having Green Day give society the musical finger ala "Longview" made absolute sense. Green Day became the first "punk" band to have a platinum album, and rightly so. They were loud and fast and fun, while Billie Joe sang with a quirky English affectation, and Tre Cool may be one of the best punk drummer ever. That didn't stop the naysayers from braying "poseurs!," but Green Day had more up their artistic sleeve.

"Insomniac" gave the fans who banged their heads to "Dookie" a lot of what they expected in slams like "Walking Contradiction," which again sported a brilliantly self-effacing lyric in "I'm a smart sas, but I'm playing dumb." At the same time they were obviously plundering Ramones' songs, they also came up with a riff worthy of AC/DC on "Brain Stew." That was the kind of smarts that got them off of the alt-rock radio station ghetto and on to the ones that specailzed in Ozzy. By the next album, "Nimrod," the worldview had obviously made a huge lurch. "We're living in repetition," claims Billie Joe at the beginning of "Repetition," "content in the same old shtick." It's an honest to Pete love song! Almost as far from the "Dookie" mold was the inescapable "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)," safe enough to work its subversive way onto "Seinfeld."

That acoustic sound blossomed out in full during "Warning," especially the great title track. Even the requisite punky song, "Minority," sounds a little out of sorts with the rest of the CD. It's hard to sound like an overworked teenager when the adult nostalgia of "Macy's Day Parade" belies your age. Not that it matters...every single single of these 21 "Superhits" comes of as individualistic of the "Green Day" sound.

Obviously Green Day were smarter than originally given credit for. "International Superhits," as a history of modern alt-rock and just for plain fun, is every bit as worthy as "Ramonesmania" and "Singles Going Steady." More than any other band of the 90's, Green Day plumbed the spirit and energy of those first 70's bands and pulled into the next generation.

(PS: Just to prove that they could be mature and still kick butt, the 2004 "American Idiot" is Green Day's best CD yet.)

Free Music Review: Green Day kix and so does the retrospect
Hit: 5 Stars

If you didnt realize this is a retrospect of Green Days "hits". International Superhits has songs back from the album "Kerplunk" (The song "Welcome To Paradise"). What I fins disappointing is that there are no songs from when John was still Green Day's drummer (The album 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours has his work). On the bright side though there are songs like Maria, Poprocks & Coke which were previously unrealesed and the song J.A.R (Jason Andrew Relva) which was one of their songs from "Music From The Motion Picture ANGUS". So those are all pluses. I do feel that they left out some other good songs also like
2000 Lightyears Away and Dominated Love Slave
(From the album "Kerplunk")

Burnout
(From the album "Dookie")

Prosthetic Head
(From the album Nimrod)

Overall though International Superhits did amass some of the greatest Green Day songs. If your a longtime fan this is great for those few songs that were not on other Green Day albums and if your a new fan it's great if you only want some of the great songs by the guys. Personly I think all the Green Day is awesome and I have all their full length albums from 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours to Shenanigans.
Green Day has been able to pull off many diffrent sounds which you can experiance on this album. Just look at "Poprocks & Coke" to "Longview" to "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" to "Minority" and you'll notice each one has a diffrent yet makes you want to sing-a-long sound.
Not only does Green Day have a variety of diffrent sounds but the songs all flow pretty well together. Notice "Longview" leading on to "Welcome To Paradise" and "Brain Stew" leading on to "Jaded".
I've been asked to describe Green Day before and it's almost impossible too. The songs all have diffrent meanings. "Minority" is a protest song, "Longview" is basically talking about the average day bum/slacker, "Poprocks & Coke" talks about dedication to someone. The most meaningful song as I hear though has to be "Good Riddance (time Of Your Life)" which if your still a kid you will probably most likely hear at your summer camps at least once but even when not at camp just makes you think about memories and all the good times.
I've already said a lot and if your still reading your obviously tired of reading this so I'm just going to finish by saying that Green Day is a amazing band that I love to hear all the time and I hope you will too.
