Free Music Notes for Kerplunk

Free Music Review: underrated classic
Hit: 5 Stars

Green Day's Kerplunk laid out the musical and lyrical blueprint that was to come in later efforts which makes this album a necessary listen. This album was the introduction of the final ingredient to Green Day's signature sound, Tre Cool. Adding his bashing drums and rolling fills, he matched well with Mike Dirnt's busy bass work and Billie's melodic but nasty guitar tone. Cool also serves up a wild card with the country parody "Dominated Love Slave" which is only made funnier by the band's pre-American Idiot bashing of rednecks (:pick-up truck") and Mike Dirnt's authentic walking bassline.
It has been said that this album was their pot album (ala the Beatles' Rubber Soul") which is strongly evident in Billie's lyrics and the odd, non punk experimentation which augments the album. "Christie Road" is about a place where the band went to smoke. Billie seals that deal by singing "smoked my boredom gone slapped my brains out so high" Also in "One Of My Lies" Billie and Mike sum in up, in perfect harmony "And all i wanna do is get real high" It's fun to hear cannabis indulgence from a band that got their name from a pot reference.
The album's augmentions (perhaps from smoking so much) come from the changes in directions the songs go. The drum, bass, and improvised guiatr feedback breakdown in Welcome To Paradise, the drum and bass intro of "80",the metallic palm-muting at the end of "One Of My Lies" the odd sound collage (toilet bowl flushing ambitions away) in "Android" Not to forget the amazingly melodic bass line and contemplative pace of "No One Knows" and the Simon and Garfunkel on speed approach to "Words I Might Have Ate" All unique touches an album which has been constantly tagged as bland and repetitive.
Billie's lyrics don't falter on this album either, writing about his life and those around him in an urban romanticized way. "Wandering down these streets all by myself/think of my future now i just don't know" or the lyric "like sitting on blacktops of the schoolgrounds/the love i bitched about i finally found" or "hey old man in women's shoes i wonder if he knows i think he's crazy" This has always been a theme for him (being from the Bay area in CA) and it's much more appealing on this album because at the time of the recording he was more of an embodiment of St. Jimmy and the urban characters he created in American Idiot. ie the character study in "Android" was probably based on somebody he saw on the street that day. The post-adolescent struggle of love and loss is more of a first person affair and understanding that the band were in their late teens-early twenties when Kerpunk was recorded give the lyrics a bit more gravity. Though the abudance of love songs may seem corny to some Billie writes them just as impassioned as the late Joey Ramone or Smoking Popes Josh Caterer and gives them a brash, darker, more desperate feel that i'm sure bands like Brand New and Alkaline Trio took notice of. (random pop punk side note: I've seen random pictures of Mark Hoppus in the early days of Blink wearing a Kerplunk t-shirt thus giving evdience to the influence this album has had on many)
An intersting non punk influence that can be seen all over Billie's writing is J.D. Salinger, author of Catcher in the Rye (among other books) that Billie pays homage to in "Who Wrote Holden Caulifield" Containing the amatuerish edge (i.e. pre-major label) sound of 39 Smooth, the melodic punk of Dookie, The harder, frantic edge of Insomniac, the experimental phases of Nimrod and Warning and the stuck in suburbia story of American Idiot Kerpunk is definitely, and my personal favorite essential Green Day listen.
