Free Music Notes for Firefly (Original Television Soundtrack)

Free Music Review: Probably the best scoring out of the big three Whedon shows
Hit: 5 Stars

I loved Christopher Beck on Buffy and I thought Angel's Robert J. Kral was fine 'n dandy, but Gred Edmonson on Firefly really takes the cake for me, and I didn't realize this until I bought and listened to this amazing, wonderful soundtrack.

Call me biased, but I love my "Firefly." What a wonderful show. And I had no doubt it would be a wonderful show before it aired, because this is Joss Whedon we're talking about here - he's my god.

This soundtrack, unlike the recently released Angel soundtrack, is balanced and almost has continuity/consistency. The Angel soundtrack would go from glorious season five fight-music to season two Pylea-cheese, making the Cd a mostly "listen-then-skip" affair.

With the "Firefly" soundtrack, it's an entire listening experience, and it doesn't even matter for me if I remember which episode each song came from: this CD is an entire mood, an ethereal feeling.

The mix of Chinese, Western, Classical (and the oboe! the lovely, lovely Early oboe!) is truly dynamic. Thanks to the wonderful production by Edmonson and the fantastic selection of instruments/effects, these songs sound like they were played by all-real instruments (even though they couldn't have been). What really matters is, really, the tight song-writing and the consistent mood throughout the songs. It certainly feels like Edmonson "got" the series and really, really enjoyed it, and I can't say the same to the somewhat inconsistent efforts of Mr. Kral.

Sometimes the music is too "background-y" and slow, especially in the first half of the disc, but by the middle it's all good from there on.

Why didn't Edmonson score "Serenity" (the movie)?

Best tracks: "River Tricks Early," "Boarding the Serenity / Derelict," and "Inside the Tam House."

Grade: B+/A-

Free Music Review: Edmonson Captures Browncoat Spirit
Hit: 5 Stars

When watching the original Firefly series, the music struck me as being intrinsic to the style and feel - the idea if you will - of Joss Whedon's future worlds. The opening title theme immediately captures the expectations of the viewer, and the incidental music combines the western and eastern cultures seamlessly throughout the action. This CD contains excerpts and highlights from the television series, and from Big Bar Fight to Dying Ship, fans of the series will be undoubtedly delighted to reminisce with the soundtrack. Greg Edmonson's compositions manages to combine the stereotypical American western motifs many of us are familiar with, and creates an extraordinary hybrid with oriental and eastern influences that constantly remind the listener of the bizarre yet effective (and believable) amalgamation of major world powers that has occurred within the Firefly universe. The soundtrack communicates, as only a soundtrack can, the diverse range of influences and emotions contained in the series. From confrontations with Reavers, Niska and Early (each taking into account the difference in character and situation), to the heart wrenching predicament of River and Simon, and through the various episodes of the series, Edmonson has composed, with almost impossible premise and parameters, a beautiful and appropriate (if there is such a thing) soundtrack. Despite the terrific work on the movie release - Serenity - which was in itself an extraordinary achievement, it is a shame that Greg Edmonson was not responsible for the soundtrack to that, too. This CD must be recommended to any Browncoat, for the Independence lives, and fights on in music.

Free Music Review: better then Zen
Hit: 5 Stars

Being an owner of an iPod and a sizable collection of iTunes you might wonder why I sought out and purchased a CD of the original television soundtrack of "Firefly". For one thing having been a sound engineer I tend to *listen* to a show as well as just watch it and I loved Firefly and still believe that the folks at Fox were rampaging idiots to shuffle the series around and then cancel it.

The show, the cast, the story line and especially the MUSIC is rich and multi faceted and soothingly complex and just a delight to both the eye and the ear and was such a relief from the usual dreck on tv. The music by Greg Edmonson is as excellently well crafted and beautiful to listen to as Joss Whedon's dialogue. The two together are a delight. You'll find yourself playing this CD over and over again. (I probably should have gotten two.)

So, I bought a copy of it- and this is my second reason why I did- my husband likes to snag my iPod when he travels and I needed to be able to still listen to this marvelous soundtrack while I'm driving about either by myself or with friends. Must share the wealth - it's only right. And it's great for sitting in traffic. You just can't have a bad day with Firefly playing in the background. It nurtures your brain the way sitting for two hours of meditation would.

Free Music Review: Terrific soundtrack--great for Browncoats
Hit: 5 Stars

While Browncoats are sure to love this soundtrack, which is especially terrific for a TV show, even non-fans of "Firefly" should appreciate the beauty of certain tracks.
Probably the greatest shortcoming of the CDis that many of the songs are too short, but this is because the songs were as brief as their accompanying scenes required.
The "Main Title" is probably the best known, and loved, song. I do wish a longer version of this song, the only one with lyrics on the soundtrack, was available.
My favorite song is track six, "The Funeral." This is the music which played during the final scene ever filmed for the show, the funeral scene at the close of "The Message." The cast had already been informed that the show had been cancelled. The final shot of Nathan Fillion's "Malcolm Reynolds," standing silently stoic in the falling snow, always comes to my mind as I listen to the melancholy ending of "The Funeral."
Other songs I particularly like are "Inara's Suite" (track 14) and "River's Dance" (track 23).
The only song from the TV show that is not all the CD is the "A Man Called Jayne" about "Jayne Cobb," Adam Baldwin's delightful character.
Great soundtrack to a great show, cancelled way, way too soon. "You can't take the sky from me......"

Free Music Review: This is from a tv show?
Hit: 5 Stars

Compare this to any tv show soundtrack you've ever heard. "Firefly" blows away every tv show soundtrack ever. In fact, it's better than almost any movie soundtrack I've ever heard - exceptions being those for music oriented movies such as "A Hard Day's Night", "Amadeus", "Almost Famous" and the like. Every piece on this cd takes you right back to the moment on the show that generated it. I love finally being able to listen to just the music from the series. I had realized how great the show's soundtrack was a long time before this was released and had tried to just listen to it while watching the show. Unfortunately, the show is so good that I'd always get distracted into viewing the whole thing as the incredible, integrated viewing experience that is "Firefly". Just being able to listen to the music alone is fabulous. And the best part is that, as listenable as this soundtrack is within the context of the show, it's just as good on it's own. Every piece of music on this cd stands on it's own. If you love "Firefly", you'll love this soundtrack just as much. The only complaint I have is one of omission. How could they not include "Hero of Canton" on this cd? I think it had something to do with licensing, but I really wish it could have been included.
