Free Music Notes for Firefly (Original Television Soundtrack)

Free Music Review: Love all things Firefly.
Hit: 5 Stars

It has the Music from the Series what else do you need to know? ;)

Free Music Review: Fantastic, but...
Hit: 4 Stars

Allow me first to say I abhor the state of television today. Very few and miles between are those programs that shine forth and cause the audience to think about a subject, concept, or idea instead of reclining passively in front of the flicker box with as much brain activity as a long-decomposed mouse on a completely rusted wheel. Firefly was, without any doubt, as close to art on television as any program has become. It never talked down to its audience (no matter how much the network tried to force it to) and relied on the audience's long-term memory to keep up with the tapestry of its many story arcs - which is likely one of the main reasons the network canned it after two handfuls of poorly-scheduled episodes. Like many of you Firefly fans out there, I had to be peeled off the ceiling when news of the release of the official Firefly soundtrack was announced. I'd bought the online-only verson about 3 weeks earlier, but being an audiophile, 128 kps .mp3s just don't hack it with me. I looked forward to freeing up space on my hard drive by deleting the nasty compressed .mp3s in favor of a bright, shiny new disc. If you're nodding your head at this point in recognition, allow me to caveat you by saying DON'T DELETE YOUR .MP3S!!!! For starters, yes, the CD-quality sound is first rate and the musical Akira-Kurosawa-meets-John-Ford head-on collision enters you into a state of serenity (heh.... get it?), but when you compare the files to the CD you notice changes. Some are cosmetic such as certain tracks have been renamed (ex: "Deserted Ship/Empty Derelict" became "Out of Gas/Empty Derelict"), some will cause more die-hard fans to fill incalculable space on blogs when they discover some interior tracks have been rearranged, all of which were fine and understandable as long as the original material was kept but the one key element that offends my completist/OCD/type-a sensibilities and keeps it off the fifth star is that the track called "Goodbye Early" with its fantastic and sinister oboe overtones has been excised from the CD. All of which is not to say this isn't a disc that you rush out and buy (if you can find it), which you should because the tracks are like nothing you've heard coming from that intellectual wasteland known as television, but I'll still be waiting for the Super Deluxe Multi Disc Gourmet Composer's Edition of the Firefly Soundtrack.

Free Music Review: One of the few non-theatrical soundtracks worth buying
Hit: 4 Stars

Music is a very important part of my life. Lyric free music is wonderful because it offers you a mood more than a story. I miss the big band days before vocals became necessary. Soundtracks from 1992's Last of the Mohicans, 1989's The Abyss, 1991's Dances with wolves are part of my permanent rotation (OK, so when I fly I take 1 change of clothes & 99kg of music) as well as the classics. Why do you need to know all this? So you can properly appreciate how much I enjoy the music on this disc.
The Firefly soundtrack includes all the incidental, motive & cue music that made the show such a wonderful experience. There have been other telly programmes, most notably due South which released discs and managed to include important music, but failed to include all those little themes that made the show special. The drawback is unfortunate however; to include all this music, it can't be very long. Firefly's blessing is also its curse; we get to enjoy tracks with the eclectic, unique music of "Whitefall" & "Big bar fight" & "Leaving" & "Back home" but they're only seconds long. I'm serious! Most of the tracks are under 2 minutes long & are offered as combinations.
So thanks to Joss Whedon & Greg Edmonson et al for the show & the music, buy the disc if you're a fan because you'll remember all the scenes that went with the music & that'll help ease the hungering for MORE!

Free Music Review: Pretty much for fans of Firefly.
Hit: 4 Stars

I don't think I really need to go into details that this soundtrack is pretty much just for fans of the series, if you've seen Firefly you know to expect the same beautiful and sublime music that you can find in the series. If you've never watched the series before please just stop reading this and go rent the Firefly complete series DvDs.

If you like what you see there feel free to come back and consider purchasing this CD.

My only gripe with the soundtrack that bars my giving the review 5 stars is that the folktale sung in the episode Jaynestown "A Man they call Jayne" is absent from the soundtrack having only been performed during the filming of the show, but it would have been nice to see here.

It's absence from the soundtrack is only a small loss however as the rest of the music is quite excellent.

Free Music Review: Great music, but...
Hit: 4 Stars

As much as anyone else, I love the music from this TV series. It's as distinctive a score as anything else. But I have two gripes.
Just like all the rest of the reviewers here, I believe "The Hero of Canton" should have been included. It was an instant cult hit like the show itself. Plus, more music from "Bushwhacked" should have made the cut. Particularly, the music played over the scenes of the crew cutting down the bodies of Reaver victims. And the scene of Simon and River hiding from the Alliance outside the ship. One of the more potent episodes.
The second gripe is the songs should have been listed in the same chronological order the episodes on the DVD were.
But still great listening.
