Free Music Review: Long Overdue Review

It's hard to believe that I bought both this disc and "Tilt" about the time they came out, back in '96-'97-ish. At the time I was mostly into shred and prog (nothing wrong with that) with a peripheral interest in jazz fusion. Although I still indulge in some good ol' power metal now and then, I've been listening almost exclusively to jazz for the last few years. (-and, I do mean *jazz*: Parker, Coltrane, Davis... and a lot of guitarists too. Check out a guy named Adam Rogers. Phenomenal.)
Although I've been disappointed in the direction Richie Kotzen chose to take with his music, I have kept tabs on Greg Howe off and on- always impressed with what I've heard. Recently I took this CD out to give it a spin, thinking I'd have a new take on it. Frankly, I still love it for the same reasons I did a dozen years ago: The playing is fresh, sharp... It's jazz with a rock heart. (-yeah... I know. They call that 'fusion'.) There's such a great fusion scene these days. If you haven't checked out Uncle Moe's Space Ranch, Greg's solo stuff, anything that Steve Smith (drummer from Journey) has played on in the past 10 years (esp. stuff with Larry Coryell), CAB, Jonas Hellborg w/Shawn Lane, Planet X, Ohm... etc., then you're missing out. But, this is really where it started. I don't mean 'fusion', per se. I'm savvy to the contributions of McLaughlin, Corea, DiMeola, Holdsworth... and even Miles, but these guys brought fusion into a new era with these albums. If you're a fusion fan, pick this up! Yeah... It's a bit more rock than jazz, but the chops are so tasty you won't be able to get it out of your player. (Same goes for "Tilt"; which as one reviewer commented, is actually slightly better.)
