Free Music Notes for Grey Gardens: Original Broadway Cast RecordingFree Music Review: Can' Wait For Broadway Hit: 5 Stars
I was privileged to have seen Grey Gardens in its original off-Broadway production. It is a very exciting event, indeed, that it will now be opening for an open run on the real Broadway stage. Captured within this beautifully produced CD is a show of incredible wit, depth, intelligence and beauty. It is finally an adult musical which has been long surrounded by drivel, silliness, lack of originality and overproduction. This is a show that weaves a fascinating story together with haunting music and lyrics that twist and surprise and delight. Songs such as Another Winter in a Summer Town, Around the World, and the Fashion Revolution for Today are some of the best theatre pieces written in years. The show breaks my heart and it's a long time since that's happened on Broadway. And the extras with the CD including the lyrics and beautiful photos really make this a wonderful collection. Bravo!
Free Music Review: The Broadway musical lives on Hit: 5 Stars
The soundtrack of Grey Gardens is modern, yet echoes of a Broadway heritage are present. Some parts reminded me of Sondheim and the lyrics were very clever. For one who has no chance of seeing the show, this is the next best thing and after a few playings, I can already recall the tunes and lyrics. I haven't seen the documentary upon which it is based but am an avid Kennedy-Bouvier fan. I was expecting a dark almost despairing collection of songs but was pleasantly surprised at how much light and shade is in it. What a shame it is closing so soon. I guess it doesn't have enough helicopters on stage to sustain it but I am sure it will be revived when people become aware of what an important addition it is. The characters come alive on this recording and you can almost hear them acting. A very authentic and haunting soundtrack, highly recommended to any lover of Broadway musicals.
Free Music Review: Savoring the cake I had Hit: 5 Stars
What a wonder! This cast recording of "Grey Gardens" makes each listening a recollection in tranquillity of the theater experience which becomes deeper and more enlightening. Christine Ebersole's dual roles as mother Edith Beale and Little Edie, daughter, together with Mary Louise Wilson's as the older Edith Beale spiral harmonically between love, competitiveness, shared loneliness and tragic interdependency. The cast recording immortalizes so many nuances of the musical characterizations with lyics and music that put one in mind of the flint and spirit and loneliness of Emily Dickinson's poetry. If you loved and admired the performances, you will treasure this cast recording. ( Grey Gardens - A New Musical (2006 Original Broadway Cast)
Free Music Review: GREY GARDENS CD Hit: 5 Stars
This particular CD is a recording of the original Off-Broadway production of GREY GARDENS as produced at Playwrights Horizons prior to its transfer to Broadway. This is an important distinction, because once the show was moved to Broadway, several of the most entertaining numbers were cut or severely shortened. Purchasing this CD will allow the listener to enjoy the entire original score, which includes the astounding performances by Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson. It was recently announced that the score of the Broadway version will also be recorded. But having seen the Broadway production, I can't imagine that the new recording will be more enjoyable than this off-Broadway cd. I recommend it whole-heartedly!
Free Music Review: Great Score Hit: 5 Stars
Grey Gardens has hit written all over it and will definitely be one of the musicals to beat come awards time. It has one of the best scores to hit Broadway in many a season. The subject matter seems daunting to say the least for a musical, but they've pulled it off beautifully. Wonderful performances by Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson. I recently finally caught the original documentary and Ebersole's performance is so like Little Edie its uncanny. Great songs that work within the story that you can sing along to. They havent skimped on the packaging, either, for this recording (made before it moves to Broadway). Essential for any theater lover. Quirky, funny and a little haunting. A class act all the way!
