Free Music Notes for Grey Gardens: Original Broadway Cast RecordingFree Music Review: A real treasure Hit: 5 Stars
This is quite wonderful. There are a couple of clunkers - or maybe they'll just have to grow on me - but the score is smart, tuneful and totally entertaining. The range of material here is amazing - from very bouncy upbeat fun like The Five-Fifteen to Around the World, arguably the score's best. A real standout is The Revolutionary Costume for Today. A brilliantly realized piece of theater. And while all the performers shine, the real reason to buy this CD is Christine Ebersole! WOW. She gives a staggeringly brilliant performance on Disc. I can just imagine how powerful she is onstage. She moves to the top of my list.
Free Music Review: Sensational Musical at a time when Musicals are suffering Hit: 5 Stars
I saw Grey Gardens in New York last month without knowing much about it and the Documentary it is based on. By the end of the show with the audience on their feet screeming and cheering the cast lead by Christine Ebersole who plays 2 roles in the show, I became an instant fan.
The recording is one you all need to hear as it has a booklet with great pictures and all the words but the songs are the type you remember as soon as you hear them. Unfortunately I heard that the show comes to an end at the end of July so the only way you can hear this amazing cast will be by buying this CD.
Free Music Review: The Best Musical of the Season Hit: 5 Stars
When you listen to a cast recording, does it feel like being IN the theater? Just by listening, can you "see" the performances in your mind's eye? Does the emotional impact still come through? Because this recording of "Grey Gardens" does just that: it gives you the feeling of watching the one of the performances that took place at Playwrights Horizons during the cold winter of 2006.
This recording is not only well engineered, but extravagantly packaged. Quality is the hallmark of Frankel and Korie's score, of Ebersole's radiant performance, and of this recording.
Free Music Review: A milestone in American musical evolution Hit: 5 Stars
The score is nigh perfect in evolving from a Cole Porter, Irving Berlin pastiche in Act One to a Stephen Sondheim, neo Phillip Glass tone in Act Two. The song, "Will You," so brilliantly acted by Christine Ebersoll, never fails to bring me to tears. I was thrilled to see Grey Gardens on Broadway and shocked to learn it closed in late July 2007. In a half-century of theatre going around the globe, this show remains an all-time highlight for me...up there with Gypsy, West Side Story, Follies, Candide, Cabaret, Sweeney Todd and Billy Eliot. Thank God for this wonderful CD.
Free Music Review: Oh my! This is the best thing EVER to happen in America! Hit: 5 Stars
Never have I cherished an original cast recording of a musical like I do this one. Grey Gardens - The Musical caused my to take action in my life and travel to New York to see Christine Ebersole and company live on Broadway. That performance was a matinee near the closing date and after they won the Tony so most of the wind had been taken from their sails but still I had nothing but admiration for them anyway. This show has one of the most beautiful and inventive musical scores ever written for the stage.Ms. Ebersole and co. are beyond brilliant. You all must have it!
