Fresh on the heels of rave reviews for the off-Broadway production of their holiday musical Striking 12, the smart-pop trio GrooveLily unveils their newest cast recording: A LITTLE MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S MUSIC, drawn from the novel production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream in which they co-starred in the spring of 2006. It features three all-new GrooveLily songs - "Slings of Eros," "While You Were Sleeping" and "When I Dream" -- as well a series of original suites that Groovelily has carefully developed and shaped for this new recording. Written with equal participation and improvisation from all band members, the end result is an exciting and unique cast recording that GrooveLily's Brendan Milburn has called "some of the most lyrical, lovely, groovy, rhythmically complex and unfettered music we've ever made." All music by GrooveLily (Valerie Vigoda, Brendan Milburn & Gene Lewin); lyrics by GrooveLily & William Shakespeare.This CD documents the songs New York trio GrooveLily wrote and performed for director Tina Landau's musical take on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Don't be fooled by an album title that brings to mind A Little Night Music, however. We are not in Sondheim territory here, but in a benign, lite-jazzy, lite-funky environment. In the liner notes, Landau explains that the show was "GrooveLily's dream of Shakespeare's play." And so the band, led by violinist-singer Valerie Vigoda, wrote (and performed onstage) songs inspired by the characters; they are grouped thematically on the CD. Alas, perhaps the endeavor worked better on stage, especially for the songs where the lyrics are not by the Bard ("When I dream, without trying/I can float, I can climb" and other such banalities). In the end, the recording lacks both the dramatic thrust of good musical theater and the catchy hooks of good pop songs. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
