Free Music Review: Grover Still Grooving By The Winelight

Basking in the success baught to him by means of Winelight and it's equally winning follow up release Come Morning Grover Washington kept Marcus Miller and Richard Tee in the fold,which is a great choice if your looking to make this kind of music function really well and also baught in Philly's Dexter Wansel in for the title cut-a high point of the album and worth discussing in the beginning. Long aware of how well the soul vocal duet worked with his kind of sax playing Grover had Patti Labelle come in and throw down one of her best performances and trust me:she has many many more where that came from. Another great creative point is how a little twitch of the mixing console allows Patti's wailing vocal cry to sound as if it's leaping out of Grover's..wailing cry on sax. I've heard it before but that little effect gets me every time. There are two fast jams on this album too. "Can You Dig It" and most importantly "Mixty Motions",with it's cleverly misspelled title both really put percussionist Ralph McDonald to good use on the kind of jazz-funk groove Grover did best: dancably soulful with a certain lightness and understatement from everyone involved. Even though later smooth jazz sugar coated that idea way too much in places.....brevity is a wonderful thing,in writing about music and often enough in playing it. At the same time it's important to be able to do this without sounding too forcably natural and hollow. I can't point out enough that Grover was one of the masters at avoiding those pitfalls during these years and every song here comes from that place. After all you also see how midtempo,soulful fare such as the Bobby McFerrin sung "Things Are Getting Better" as well as caribbean flavored smooth funk like "More Than Meets The Eye","Brazilian Memories" with it's low and errie synthesizer riffs and "Cassie's Theme" how even a somewhat lower tempoed groove,with the same sort of lightness in tow have even more of that "heavy on easy" type strengh and power in them than some faster ones. Not only is sometimes less more but also you hear the strengh of the individual musicians a little more as well. The album is rounded out with "I'll Be With You",another Philly style soul-jazz ballad sing by bassist Cedric Napoleon. Not only does this album showcase Grover's well established light but elaborate sax style but the spongy jazz-funk rhythm section with him. Those who enjoyed the style of Winelight,especially as an extention of his recordings in the late 70's backed by Locksmith than this is something you'll want to hear.
