Free Music Notes for Appetite for DestructionFree Music Review: Should be repackaged in Deluxe Edition. Hit: 5 Stars
This is one of the best albums ever recorded, and the one that changed everything that was to come, for better and worse. I liken this one to The Doors' debut in that a majority of their songs to be on future CDs were written by the time this came out. 1/4 of "Use Your Illusion" were recorded around this time as well as most of the acoustic part of "Lies". "Appetite" had a different cover which caused a lot of controversy at the time, and I think that the original cover can still be found.
Once upon a time, Guns N Roses were a band that caused a storm and were the biggest band out there. Unfortunately, changes were to occur and were never the same ever since. The "Use Your Illusion" CDs were big hits, but were more sprawling epics than they were great rock songs.
I think they were classified as a "metal" band in the beginning (mostly due to their look), but their ties to bands like the Stones were far more obvious, and their roots to punk were probably more closer (even more obvious on their "Spaghetti Incident" CD).
Overall, the songs are dark and uncompromising, yet a song like "Sweet Child O'Mine" winds up in there, kind of like how Eminem will put that one radio-friendly song to draw you in to a far darker world...
But the band itself is the engine to what propelled this album into being a classic, not just one person. Each of them have a distinct sound on there that can be heard through the entire thing. There are times they might have tried to sound like mid 80s metal (keep in mind Metallica were just starting to be headliners around this time and bands like Motley Crue were riding high), but where most bands were singing about over the top stuff or just having a good time, GnR were talking about personal "devils" they were facing than most bands were doing.
There are a couple of songs that some might consider "filler", but included in this collection of songs it fits just right.
The only thing I can suggest is that the demos from the sessions, outtakes, the MTV "Live at the Ritz" and the promo videos be included as part of a "Deluxe Edition" CD/DVD.
With or without extras,it's a bona fide classic and a must own.
Free Music Review: Hardrock masterpiece debut from last true Rock N'Roll Band Hit: 5 Stars
In 1987, the small LA club band Guns N' Roses, released their debut, titled Appetite For Destruction. Rock N' Roll wasn't at its best in that time; poppy-comercial crap ruled all around the world. Until the day AFD was released. To put it simply, Axl and company kicked a** of all those who said rock is dead - and proved it is not. This is what changed the world in the late 80s.
So what's so great about this music and that band? Isn't it just another rock n' roll stuff we had through the years? Well, the fact is - that Guns N' Roses were the last true Rock N' Roll band - You may argue, but this is unfortunately true. Rock N' Roll best years, the 70s were gone, the 90s were full of cheap commercial pop and alternative bands, and nowadays... let's not even talk about it. It was Guns N' Roses who played true, inspiring, Rock N' Roll at their time. There wasn't anyone like Them when They disappeared.
Back to the record - It is piece of raw, trash, wild, rough, raunch hard rock - and You can't help but love it. The opening riffs of Welcome To The Jungle set You right in there; It's So Easy make You even hotter - Slash kicks off with his dire guitar licks on Nighttrain; etc, etc... The others are great, too - like the major GN'R hit Sweet Child O' Mine with awesome riff at the beginning - just a really sweet, power ballad tune that always make You dreamy - and tear Your soul apart on Slash incredible solo. Anything Goes is another favourite - really cool one, very catchy - this song has got sexual innuendo and bluesy rawness that will surely please You. And the closing Rocket Queen, a masterpiece - Strong beat starts, and Duff comes in with bass riff... this song GOT THE POWER. Some stellar jammin' in the middle and the closing part, it's just excellent. Flawless.
Not to mention the others - Paradise City, another big hit, or dark rock-riffer My Michelle - This album is a joy from start to finish.
GN'R would release other excellent albums in the future, but Appetite For Destruction remains as essence of their classic sound and is favourite among most fans. Well, what can I say... just get this album and enter the Rock N' Roll heaven. Highly recommended.
Free Music Review: An 80's Masterpiece Hit: 5 Stars
Well, what else can be said about this one? I can still remember the day I bought this for the first time (October 10, 1987).Several worn-out copies later, "Appetite For Destruction" remains my favorite recording of all time. For me, the timing of ths record could not have been better. This became my personal soundtrack during my junior and senior years of high school. There was much I could identify with: anger and rebellion("Out Ta Get Me", "It's So Easy"),the longing to be somewhere else("Paradise City"), and the feelings I had for that special girl(the #1 smash"Sweet Child O'Mine"). These days, when I put the CD on, I just sit back and think about all the years that have passed, and the music still has the same impact it had then. It is rough around the edges, even sloppy at times, yet this is what seperates "Appetite" from some of the band's later efforts. It carries real, raw emotion that feels genuine, not manufactured. In the era that was the late 1980's, there was commercial pop(Whitney Houston), commercial rock(U2, REM) and the endless wave of commercial pop-metal(Poison, Ratt, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, etc...) When Guns N" Roses came along, it's guitar crunch along with it's Sex Pistols' attitude and lead vocalist Axl Rose's sometimes sensitive/sometimes angry, but very intelligent lyrics, GN'R filled a void which had been missing since the late 70's, when Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and The Rolling Stones were kings of the hard rock mountain. Subsequently, GN'R themselves were supplanted by the alternative rock movement of the early 1990's, as well as causing their own demise with all the internal fighting/drug use/Axl's increasingly odd behavior, to name a few. As of this posting, Axl Rose is still attempting a comeback using the Guns N' Roses name. "Chinese Democracy" is the rumored title of the new recording, but it's been 11 years since the last new CD's of original material(1991's "Use Your Illusion" I and II). Nevertheless, if Guns N' Roses never resurface again, "Appetite For Destruction" will stand as one of the truly magnificent rock albums of all time, and perhaps as and indicator of what impact Guns N' Roses could have made had the band stayed intact in it's original form.
Free Music Review: Shocked and disgusted Hit: 5 Stars
I am completely shocked and disgusted on some of the reviews I read. Fortunately it was very few. What I cant understand is why people think Nirvana was so great in rock history. Nirvana came in the rock world, destroyed everything that was good and lowered the standard of music for the next 10+ years to come. They are responsible for every terrible "rock" song you hear on the radio i.e. nickleback and the hundreds of clone bands like them. Worst than that I was reading how someone compared Clay Aikens, some fat american idol guy, Hilary duff, and Limpbizkit to Guns. Claiming Guns werent as good as really honestly believe that that review had to be a joke, know one could say that and really mean it. Remember Guns n roses were the last rock superstars to ever grace music with there presents. Since then no one has ever come close to the status they achieved. DO you think Rolling Stones would pick a name out of the list of bands we have nowadays to go on tour with them, and have them join them on stage to do a song....Hell no! If it wasn't for the few bands like Guns n roses I think I would prefer to be deaf. Appetite for destruction is the single best album of all time...hands down. Its rawness, honesty, and timeless riffs say it all. It was the first album to stir up any real controversy without even attempting to do so. Nowadays you got people like eminem who make a conscience effort to try and be edgey....pretty lame. Slash is not the greatest guitarist in the world, but he has to be one of the best riff writers out there, and his solos are melodic and in key with melody of the song. Its like two different songs being played together in perfect harmony. As for Axl roses singing.....his voice is one of a kind. He can sing at any range at any volume. And no one, not a single soul could attempt to belt out there voice like that without losing it for a month. Just listen to the opening of Welcome to the jungle on any live album or dvd. Its unreal. This album is perfect from begining to end, and if it wasnt for the swears on the album, every track would of been a radio played song.
Free Music Review: AC/DC COLLIDES WITH LED ZEPPELIN! Hit: 5 Stars
Guns N' Roses sound like a mix between AC/DC and an early Led Zeppelin. Axl has a normally high pitched voice but he has an amazing vocal range so he sounds like Robert Plant. The rest of the band has that same bluesy/hard rock sound as AC/DC. I have to tell you there isn't a bad song on here. Although this doesn't mean some aren't better than others. Read on to find out about the songs.WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE: Straight forward hard rocker with awesome lyrics and great guitar riffs from Slash and Izzy. Axl executed his vocals perfectly on this song. Perfect way to start off the album. 10/10 IT'S SO EASY: Good song but overshadowed since there are three classics on the album and this one didn't get very popular. Still, the lyrics are interesting and it's worth a listen. 8/10 NIGHTRAIN: This song is a cool hard rocker with funny lyrics and a very bluesy rock sound to it. 9/10 OUT TO GET ME: I just love the chorse on this song and this is PURE PUNK! If your a fan of Guns N' Roses' punk songs don't miss this one. 10/10 MR. BROWNSTONE: Cool verses and an even better chorse on this song which is all about drugs and how they affect you in life. 9/10 PARADISE CITY: An ABSOLUTE classic song with sweet guitars, steady drum beats, and well executed vocals. 10/10 MY MICHELLE: Good hard rocker about some love story involving Axl and some girlfriend named Michelle. 9/10 THINK ABOUT YOU: Party rock some but it just doesn't really stand out as a favorite of mine. But again, punk fans will like it. 7/10 SWEET CHILD OF MINE: BEST SONG ON THE ALBUM! An absolute classic! Awesome guitar solo courtesy of Slash. Even my Mom likes it and she hates 80's rock. I'm embarrased to say this but when I first listened to this song on the radio I thought it was AC/DC. But you have to admit, the opening guitar riff sounds JUST like something Angus Young would do. 20/10 YOU'RE CRAZY: Another punk anthem with great guitars. 8/10 ANYTHING GOES: Song all about sex. It has a cool sing along chorse. 9/10 ROCKET QUEEN: Sing along wit a geat insrumental part. Very long though. Still it's a cool closing song. 10/10
