Free Music Review: 5 Stars are not enough to rate this album
Hit: 5 Stars

Doesn't matter if you like Metallica or Aerosmith, Rolling Stones or Pearl Jam, Led Zeppellin or Iron Maiden. This album is a gift. Is a gift for any rock and roll fan. 12 years have passed since I bought Appetite, and still I can't understand how five human beings could make such a masterpiece. It's like 5 Gods decided to play hard rock and Appetite came to life. If you ask me to tell you my favorite song, my answer would be something like: Rocket Queen! ...No, maybe Sweet Child. No, I got it! ...Paradise City. This is the greatness of this album: Every song is unique and extraordinary. Every song is better than the best of any other rock album.

Rocket Queen is one of the best songs ever composed by any band. The first three minutes are basicly related to the miserable life of an undesirable woman. The music reflects what they put on paper: darkness, pain and sorrow. Suddenly, the song turns into something really different. Slash speeds up his riffs for 30 seconds, and then lyrics become the most beautiful words of hope and care that i've ever heard. If you are ever lonely, sad and in dispair, these are the words you'd love to hear. Paradise City: "Take me down to the paradise city where the grass is green and the girls are pretty" This is the famous chorus of one of their most popular songs. This is the perfect song to hear when you are tired of fighting day after day to get a better life. Powerful riffs and a final guitar solo that is just from another world.

You can also find songs like Welcome to the jungle, Outta get me, Brownstone and Nightrain. Brilliant hard rock pieces with outstanding vocals by Axl. All 4 songs are very rich in lyrics and resume the roughness of hard life on the streets, where drugs, alcohol, powerty and violence are the rules of living. If you hear carefully those songs, you are gonna be surprised about the multiplicity of voices that Axl can achieve. Is like a different singer for each song.

Sweet Child and Think About You, the first one is the trademark song from the gunners with the unforgettable guitar intro from Slash and superb wah-wah solos. The second one is maybe the most low profile song in this album, but surely one of the nicest and warmest love songs ever written by GN'R. Not hard, not sweet, just the perfect combination of guitars and power volcals. Finally, a special chapter for My Michelle. Slow guitar intro, killer vocals from Axl and spectacular lyrics associated to the hard life from a girl lost in drugs, lack of parents and money and no friends to guide her thru the most difficult moments. These guys are just outstanding. Slash is a guitar God. Since 1991, I haven't heard an album with half the quality Slash showed in his guitar works in Sweet Child, Rocket Queen, Estranged, Locomotive or November Rain. Axl and Izzy are great for composing. Their Lyrics are brilliant! Just take a look at the songs from Appetite and you'll understand the mastery and sensitiveness that lies in the very deep heart of these guy. Especially Axl, the eternal problem guy. Yeah, there is no doubt he is a difficult guy to deal with. But you just have to take a look at his songs (like Estranged and November Rain, and i'm sure he wrote Think About You, Rocket Queen and Sweet Child), to understand that there is a really nice and good hearted guy behind the problematic one. One fully talented musician and excellent person, who just got a difficult round in life that made him a little explosive and tough.

Finally, don't hesitate to buy this album. You won't regret. For me, this is the best album ever, and not only from rock and roll. And just like the title says...5 stars are not enough!

Free Music Review: The Punked Out, Make-Up- Free Remedy to LA Glam Rock
Hit: 5 Stars

This album broke a hole through the shallow facade that had become glam rock in the late 80's. The debauchery of Slash and Axl Rose seemed to win out over the pretension of the hair and makeup brigade. When Def Leppard had its huge "Hysteria" album and U2 was being drowned in accolades for its "Joshua Tree" album, Guns N' Roses burst onto the scene with a sound that jumped out of your speakers with a fast, raw thumping energy.

1."Welcome To The Jungle" - Legend has it that when Axl was young, he got lost in LA one time, and stumbling into the ghetto, someone said to him, "you know where you are?/you're in the jungle/you're gonna die. Comparable in subject to "Mean Street" by Van Halen. Aside from being a great rocker, its commendable for the way it deals with and brings to life the inner city. Much like rap, it sounds menacing because it views an often ignored subject from the perspective of the drug dealer.
2."It's So Easy" - "You think you're so cool/Why don't you just/F... Off" Mean spirited, angry and bitchin'!!
3."Nightrain" - Every time I see an empty bottle of this in the street it makes me laugh cause I think of this song. It's comical how well the lyrics sum up the entire image of the sleazy, violent, urban drunk. You have to laugh cause it's all too real.
4."Out Ta Get Me" - Theatrical account of Axl's abused childhood.
5."Mr. Brownstone" - Heroin junkieism in the vein of Lou Reed
and David Bowie, updated for hard rock, yet before Alice In Chains ode-to-smack album, "Dirt". An addictive song.
6."Paradise City" - A tremendous indictment of the entire LA culture. An almost country opening and tasty riffs lead up to a whistle that kicks off this freightrain of a sing-a-long, chock full of power chords and riffology with a derailing crescendo. Led Zeppelin comparisons are apt here.
7."My Michelle" - A country western opening morphs into another baddass hard rocker. Axl's girlfriend was a socio-path too.
8."Think About You" - Best thing here are Axl's hyena vocals.
9."Sweet Child O' Mine" - Played in the key of C sharp major it sounds even better due to the lead up of "Think About You" which is played in the relative minor of B flat minor. Slash came up with one of the all time great guitar riffs here, although the song is largely bass driven. Axl's most beautiful lyric: "Her hair reminds me of a warm safe place/Where as a child I'd hide/And pray for the thunder/And the rain/To quietly pass me by". Excellent pacing and dynamics with a scorching solo by Slash. I used to think the low and high voices on the "Where do we go" part were two different singers. It displays the huge range of Axl's voice.
10."You're Crazy" - An on-fire punk-rocker.
11."Anything Goes" - The obligatory sex song. Great serpentine vocals, caked with guitars.
12."Rocket Queen" - Great drum and bass groove. A prostitute love song. Not nearly as good a pop song as "Roxanne" by The Police, but same topic. Check out the break down into the outro in the last 3 minutes! Great dynamics. Just another nasty customer, suddenly turns into a caring lover. Beautiful guitar/vocal medley here.

This album truly was a harbinger of the grunge to come. Guns N' Roses differed from pop metal in that the bass was much more punky and prominent, and the playing was more raw, unpolished and out of control. They were just as self-destructive as the glam rockers, but with a more streetwise, honest and to the point outlook. Make no mistake - this album can give you a headache but its great to be able to tap into the this kind of energy and attitude when you want to, without having to do the horrible things these guys did to themselves.

Free Music Review: The Greatest Rock Album of the 80s
Hit: 5 Stars

The debut album for Guns n' Roses was and will remain one of the greatest debuts of all time for a rock group. In a time where disco-pop music ruled the music scene, Guns n' Roses unleashed a new phase of rock which was at the time unsurpassable. Guns n' Roses brought raw, vicious rock n' roll to the charts as lead singer Axl Rose screeched lyrics about sex and drugs, and guitarist Slash smashed out brilliant guitar riffs.

Song by Song:

1. Welcome to the jungle: one of the three huge hits of this album. An outstanding beginning to one of the best rock n' roll albums of all time. Who can dislike it: "sha-na-na-na knees, knees!"

2. It's so easy: Although fairly underrated, this track is one of my favourites of the album. A wonderful opening guitar intro into the heavy rock side of the track. It is very well paced and contains a highly energetic beat to it. We here Axl go lower in this one and Duff Mcgackan backs it on vocals throughout the heavy track.

3. Night Train: It's your typical GNR song. Heavy, rockish guitar playing from Slash and Axl Rose unleashes the powerful chorus throughout the last minute of the song.

4. Out Ta Get Me: This track contains explicit lyrics which is the most appealing part of the song. Similar to night train, Axl is closing out the song screeching the chorus: "they're out ta get me, they won't catch me, cause I'm innocent!"

5. Mr. Brownstone: This song was written by bassist Duff and it is nothing short of brilliant. He explores the life of himself and Slash as they once struggled through a heroin addiction. This is probably the best song written by Duff in his time with GNR.

6. Paradise City: This track is an all-time favourite for most GNR fans. Axl is especially strong singing this track live, but of course the original is nothing short of brilliant. This touched many GNR fans including me and should be considered one of the greatest rock songs of all time.

7. My Michelle: This is a heavy, ugly rock song in the lyrical stand point. Rose shouts out lyrics relating to cocaine and sex in this track. It has a classic intro, somewhat similar to the intro of the "Use Your Illusion I" hit, "Don't Cry". However, this track becomes heavy and contains outstanding energy and excitement in the chorus.

8. Think about you: This track is one of the lightest in terms of the lyrics. This is a beautiful song that can be appreciated by most rock n' roll fans as a touching song.

9. Sweet Child O' Mine: This song made Guns n' Roses superstars. It begins with a beautiful guitar solo from Slash and then Axl begins singing the beautiful lyrical tune. This is probably GNR's best ballad.

10. You're Crazy: This is heavy, quick and entertaining. Non GNR fans won't like this song but it's a favourite for any hardcore GNR fan. It stays quick throughout and Axl delivers powerful lyrics. GNR Lies sticks in a slower paced, and sensational version of it if you're interested.

11. Anything Goes: This song relates to sex and is one of the weakest off Appetite for Destruction. It still contains an upbeat rock n' roll sound but lacks in the lyrical standpoint.

12. Rocket Queen: This is a nice way to end the album. It begins with a 45 second instrumental intro which leads into an all-around solid track.

Therefore, it is clear in my mind that this is a must own Metal album, featuring superb guitar riffs, awesome lyrics with a vengeance, and definitive and catchy tunes. A must buy for all metal fans and someone interested in GNR music.

Free Music Review: A whole new Beast
Hit: 5 Stars

My old review was just a bashing of Led Zeppelin fanatics who insult other bands works, so this one is an actual review. You could call it remastered. Hahahahahaha! I kill myself with laughter. Anyway in the 80's hair metal had dominated the stage and all of the tough boys had turn soft in order to get commercial and gain big bucks. Well, Guns n' friggn Roses is going to change all that. Weeks after its debut Appetite already has teens not taking baths and combing their hair and cussin out their Algebra II teacher for being "So Easy" and telling their sister to "turn around B#$ch I got a use for you, besides you aint got nothin better to do!" But all incest jokes aside, here is how I describe Appetite for Destruction.
Track Listing:

1.Welcome to the Jungle: Welcome to the Jungle! We got riffs and lyrics, and decadence beyond magnitude. A song about entering LA in search for a new life, the introduction to Gun's N' ROses and I can't think of a better first song than this! 10/10
2.It's So Easy: The most underated hit on this album next to Mr. Brownstone. The bass intro by DUff is legend, every band I worked with opens their show with that bass riff. Also when Axl tells you to "F#$k off!" and Slash solos are the other trademark of the album. 10/10
3.Nighttrain: In my opinion greater than Welcome to the Jungle. This is the quintessential GnR concert opener, because it is loud and extremely lyrical. The whole band does amazingly well on this track. 10/10
4.Out Ta Get Me: A little weird coming after Nighttrain but great nonetheless. A little FU rock mixed with fast beat riffs make this a must-hear. 9/10
5.Mr Brownstone: One of GnR's most underated hits, the drums on this track are amazing. If you think Steven did a great job wait till you hear it with Matt on drums. 10/10
6.Paradise City: An absolute must-hear, one of GnR's greatest hits and in my opinion the best song on this album. Axl's vocals are top-notch and SLash's guitar riffs are amazing. 11/10
7.My Michelle: A story of a druggie-addict call girl whose mother is in the ground and has a drunk father. Axl has great vocals but suffers from only being 3 and some odd minutes long. 9.2/10
8.Think About You: In my opinion the most underated song on the album. It's a love story about a guy and this girl he has known for a long time and when he his drunk or high he thinks about her. Great lyrics, for those who have a childhood love they just can't reach. 10/10
9.Sweet Child O'Mine: The quintessential metal ballad. I never got the message of it, I think it is about Axl having a crush on a 15 year old (that's a joke, just ignore) but anything is open for interpretation. One of the best power ballads out there, a must listen too. 11/10
10.You're Crazy: One of cuss rock's early songs. Originally recorded as an acoustic track (see my Lies review) this electric version is more racy, rocky, and loud. Axl's vocals also sound alot more sober too. 11/10
11.Anything Goes: A weird song. I know what I said about Hollywood Rose and if possible get their version of this song because it is way better. This version has weird toy noises and sounds like a big band performance. 7/10
12.Rocket Queen: I never really got this song, it has nice guitar tone and lyrics, but the bass seems a little heavy at times. The distortion is unnecessary but the message is sure. 8/10

Guns n' Roses rating:
1.Use Your Illusion II
2.Use Your Illusion I
3.Appetite for Destruction
4.Live Era: 87-93
5.GnR Lies
6.The Spaghetti Incident?

Free Music Review: Is Appetite the best? Many say so
Hit: 5 Stars

When magazines such as Rolling Stone, Blender and Spin all hail Guns N' Roses' legendary album, Appetite for Destruction, as the greatest hard rock album of all time, well, who am I to argue otherwise. With over 20 million copies sold (it still moves 400 000 copies a year) and certified platinum 15 times in North America, it's hard to dispute the worldwide popularity and acclaim that the once most dangerous band in the world was able to garner.

Highlights:

Probably the best lead off track ever, "Welcome to the Jungle" with loud, screeching and wailing guitars layered with Axl's unrelenting and renowned shriek conveys the recklessness and raw sound that were to define the band. Alice Cooper once said that if there was one song he wished he had written, Welcome to the Jungle would be it. I dare you to go to a major sporting evet and get away without hearing this song played over the P.A.

The bass-driven anger filled "It's So Easy" continues the story of the menacing streets of Los Angeles. Arguably one the greatest bass intros in hard rock, "It's so Easy" is definitely one of the hidden gems of the album (for the casual listener of course).

The song with the most groove would have to be "Mr. Brownstone," the band's sordid tale of drug use.

Best driving song: Paradise City
Best karaoke song: Sweet Child O'Mine
Best hidden gem: Rocket Queen (I love the riff change halfway through the song - oh and the fact that during the guitar solo you can make out the sounds of Axl Rose having sex with a groupe.

If you can't get past Axl's voice, you're not going to like anything by Guns N' Roses. However, it is my opinion that Axl is capable of turning a mediocre song (Think About You) into a really good song. You take Elton John, Janis Joplin, Ronnie Van Zant (of Lynyrd Skynrd), Dan McCafferty (of Nazareth) and you have the vocals of Axl Rose. To me, he is the greatest frontman hard rock has ever seen since Robert Plant. On Appetite for Destruction, Rose's vocals and lyrics, while angry, menacing and raw, are nothing but honest. Unlike other frontman at the time (Def Leppard, Poison, Motley Crue), Axl required little in backing vocals and wrote about what he felt, caring little about the effect it would have on his audience. There is nothing contrived about this record and what was written by Axl. Songs like "Out Ta Get Me," "Rocket Queen" and "Welcome to the Jungle" are when Axl is at his best: pissed off yet insecure.

Personally, I can't relate to any of the lyrics. I do not know what it's like to be surrounded by vagrants and having to live off the mean streets of a city like Los Angeles. Moreover, I'm not a big fan of hair-metal, which I argue has little relation to Guns N' Roses. Yet for some reason, Appetite for Destruction is my favourite album.

To say that either Hysteria, Back in Black or Appetite for Destruction is the greatest hard rock album of all time is a rather arbitrary measure. It's all about personal preference. Admitting my own bias, I do believe Appetite to reign supreme for one reason: too many unmistakable songs, whether a fan or not. The defining songs of the album, Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City and Sweet Child O'Mine are probably the most recognizable songs to come out of that era. It was mentioned that "Love Bites" by Def Leppard was the greatest Power Ballad. Yet I've never heard of it. How many people could say the same about "Sweet Child O'Mine," or "Welcome to the Jungle?" Very few, I would wager.
