Free Music Notes for G N' R Lies

Free Music Review: Something for everyone
Hit: 5 Stars

This album has something for everyone (even racists, if you thing about "One in A Million"), but generally was partially opportunistic (releasing the EP - Live Like a Suicide) and another four acoustic tracks. How it would look to fans was very much parodied within the album cover which exploits the tabloid nature of their press at the time. The songs are all solid, even the acoustic version of "Your crazy" generally seems to work better than the electric version. 'Patience' is a fantastic song which, at the time really showed people some of the potential range and scope of the band. "Used to Love Her" is very tongue in cheek and reminds me of the feel of "No Expectations" by the Rolling Stones. Signalled the potential for the band which would be more fully explored in the (somewhat overblown but with many good songs) Use your Illusion albums.

The Live - Like A Suicide EP really reminds me of Aerosmith, Johnny Thunders and New York Dolls. If you like those bands you will probably recognise the influence here. Great tongue and cheek lyrics "I lead a reckless life, and yknow, its my only vice".

Free Music Review: More GNR tastiness.
Hit: 4 Stars

Is this disc essential to GNR fans?
Yup!
Patience alone makes it worth the seven bills.
A great ep with some great tunes.
Check it out.

Free Music Review: Lovely
Hit: 5 Stars

A LOOOOOOOONG time ago this was THE second tape (yes tape) I bought with my allowance money (the 1st was Appetite for Destruction.) I loved it then and still love it now. People say there's no talent, the music is hatred and the singer is lousy....they are complete idiots. The band is completely fantastic. They broke up the mundane mainstream music and made their own type of musical masterpieces, unlike anything out there at the time. The music is still kickass, my kids even love it!! They STILL rock, and in my opinion are the BEST Rock band that exists.

Free Music Review: A New Direction
Hit: 4 Stars

An album with two distinct halves, G N' R Lies is one part a "live" recording, previously released as the pre-Appetite for Destruction water tester Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide, while the second half is a collection of acoustic originals. As such, the album has two very distinct feels to it, and boasts both some highlights of Guns N' Roses' catalog, as well as many fan favorites.

Beginning with the "live" half (which isn't actually live, but a studio recording with crowd noise added in for effect), the band performs two originals and two covers. "Reckless Life," written well before the band had much of what would become their dangerous reputation, is a strong opener, as is the follow up cover of Rose Tattoo's "Nice Boys," both of which fit the band's style very well. They follow these with original "Move to the City" and a cover of Aerosmith's "Mama Kin," which demonstrate the band's less heavy tendencies and pay a tribute to one of the rock classics that came before them.

The acoustic half is all original material, beginning with the hit "Patience," which is likely the most well known track on the album. The tongue in cheek "Used to Love Her," with its comically dark lyrics follows, prior to a revisitation of Appetite track "You're Crazy," which loses little of its edge, despite being unplugged. "One in a Million" closes the album, and is a clear highlight, though it also deals with some controversial material.

All in all, a great EP coming between the groundbreaking Appetite for Destruction and the enormous scope found on the Use Your Illusion albums.

Free Music Review: SIDE TWO
Hit: 4 Stars

If you can get through the harsh lyrics side two displays some of Slash's best guitar playing. If you want more I suggest finding his track "Obsession Confession" found on Gypsy Soul New Flamenco Narada.
