Free Music Notes for Use Your Illusion 1Free Music Review: A Classic Hit: 5 Stars
The Use Your Illusion (UYI) albums are not another "Appetite for Destruction," and perhaps that is why they are not not well-received by some Guns N' Roses fans. The band's style is a bit less lively, and the songs are more serious and more sophisticated than those on the "Appetite" album, but that does not mean that the UYI albums are bad. On the contrary, they are classics.
UYI I, in my opinion, is the better of the two UYI albums. For me, the songs complement each other and flow much better than those on UYI II, it is more "down-to-Earth" than UYI II, and it comes across as if the band had more focus on this one than on UYI II. Also, it has a far better variety of style and tempo than UYI II.
Contrary to popular belief, I find very little (if any) "filler" material on this album, and nearly all the tracks are good. The highlights include the famous "November Rain," "Don't Cry," and "Live and Let Die," plus good, lesser-known material such as "Dust N' Bones," "The Garden," "Don't Damn Me," and the 10-minute art-rock piece "Coma."
UYI I is a must-have for Guns N' Roses fans, but I'm confident that anyone who has a taste for rock music will enjoy this album for a long time.
Free Music Review: A melodic masterpiece Hit: 5 Stars
This album hits hard and doesn't let up until the very last sound of drums, closing the song "Coma". No other band that I know of can write a song over ten minutes long and keep interest as well as GnR can. In my opinion, Coma is the best song GnR have ever written. It is one of the most thought provoking, lyrically challenging, melodic masterpieces this world has ever seen. This album doesn't just talk about suicide, though. It goes into standing up for what you believe in (don't damn me), love ballads (don't cry), and irony (dead horse). Dead Horse always puts me in a better mood after listening to it. "I'd like to think that our love's worth a tad more, It may sound funny but you think by now I'd be smiling". This album does not include much of the "dueling guitars" as did the appetite ablum, but musically, it is obvious they put more time into it. Lastly, I believe this to be their second best album...second to the appetite album. Hey, I'm 19...I'm not too conserned with how it sounds...I like the ideas of the appetite album better. It had more "balls" behind the lyrics, although the lyrics to the UYI albums are more meaningful.

Guns N' Roses steps up their musical talent and diversity on their pairs of Use Your Illusions - this one is the more angrier side in an overall sense. Aside from the straight up hard rock from "Appetite for Destruction" you've got GNR with more influences branching from blues, country, and classical music - I thought it was an interesting combo for the band and it all worked out well. "November Rain" is a classic - classical orchestration, beautiful piano, and the excellent guitar work from Slash in the solos and the drama at the end of the song is just intense! Aside from angry songs like "Right Next Door To Hell" you've got calmer and blusey songs like "Dust N Bones" which was a personal favorite and Axl isn't the only singer in GNR - I believe Dizzy Reid does vocals too? I'm not sure but it certainly adds a new dimension to GNR. "Live And Let Die" sounded interesting - more heavier than the original of course and more sound to it, but I'd stick with the original. In an overall sense, "Use Your Illusion I" is a musician's step forward from "Appetite" but just as in your face and quiet at times , highly recommended.

With the "Use Your Illusion" albums Guns N' Roses had to do something very difficult and that is how do you follow up the greatest rock album of all-time. They did it by not trying to make another "Appetite For Destruction" and that is why the "Use Your Illusion" albums are so great. For me "UYI 1 & 2" are the two best rock albums of the 90's and sound just as alive and fresh today while almost all the other songs and bands from the 90's sound so painfully dated. To me it is the "UYI" albums that make GN'R one of the greatest bands of all-time if not the best. On this album you get the hits "Don't Cry", "November Rain", and a great version of "Live and Let Die". Just like "UYI 2" you get a wide variety of songs, but it all works somehow and just like on "UYI 2" Izzy Stradlin gets to sing lead on a few songs. The highlights on this album for me are "Dead Horse" which just flat out rocks and maybe the best song GN'R ever did "Coma". "Coma" is an incredible ten minute song to end the album and takes you on quite a ride.
