Free Music Review: The GWAR album by which all others are judged.

Scumdogs is early GWAR at its best, and depending on your view of the band, might just be the best the band has ever been. It's nonsensical, it's infectious, it's gross, but most of all it's just fun to listen to.
You only have to read the track listing to get the sick sense of humor the band has on this album. There's everything from the gross-sounding "Love Surgery" to tracks about "Vlad the Impaler" and the "Sexecutioner". It's all heavily tongue-in-cheek, assuming the tongue is bloody from the cheek being ripped off. The band is just out there, and is clearly having a ton of fun from every moment of it.
I can only point to two weaknesses at all, and neither of them is particularly damning. The first is that GWAR was still a very young band when this was recorded, and the sound mix feels just a tiny bit amateur in spots. This only leads to more of a feeling of just how fresh and punk-inspired the band was, making this a plus for some listeners. The second is that there's one weak track here, and that's "Cool Place to Park". The song doesn't really add anything to the mythos to the band, and only really seems to be on there because the band at the time had a habit of giving the Beefcake character a single track as a vocalist. Considering that's only one track out of thirteen, you can pretty much write that off.
This album is just fun. Very explicit, very gross fun, and in all the best possible ways. If you want to pick up just one album to define GWAR as a band, this would be it. Highly recommended to all beings, human or otherwise.
