Free Music Review: Brush off da hataz & dem HOLLABACK GIRLS, Dis album is fire!
Hit: 5 Stars

Let me start off by saying that I'm not really a No Doubt fan. I like some of their songs like: "Hella Good", "Don't Speak", "Underneath It All", "Spider Webs", "I'm Just A Girl", "Ex-Girlfriend", & "It's My Life", and I also like the band members, but not enough to buy one of their CDs. I always liked Gwen Stefani though. There's just something really cool about her. I'm more into Rap/Hip Hop/R&B, so I loved it when Gwen hooked up with Eve for "Let Me Blow Ya Mind." Back then there was talk that she was releasing a solo album, and I hoped that it would be more R&B. Though "LOVE. ANGEL. MUSIC. BABY" isn't entirely or even mostly R&B, I was pleasantly surprised with the whole product. I've heard and seen many negative reviews on this album just because Gwen wanted to do her own thing away from No Doubt. But here's the REAL review. Ya'll just sit back and listen up, these songs are graded out of 5 stars:

The album kicks off with "WHAT YOU WAITING FOR?" Ya'll have already heard this one. I know I'm gonna get chewed out for this, but to tell you the truth, I'm not really fellin'' this one. It turned me off at first when I heard it. Since I hadn't head any other track off the album, I was hoping that this song wasn't a representation of the whole album. My hope was correct. I do like the way she sings on it, I like the lyrics, I even like the 'take a chance you stupid hoe' part. I don't know, maybe I really do like this song. Nah. I don't. Not really. ~3.5 Starz~

Next comes "RICH GIRL" featuring EVE. This song is hot! When I heard that DR. DRE produced this track, I knew it was going to be a highlight. The vocals are hot, the lyrics are hot, the beat is hot and Eve's rap is hot. I'm glad that Gwen's record label chose this song as her second single. ~5 Starz~

Then comes the future club banger "HOLLABACK GIRL." This is my favorite track off of the whole album. Now, let me be honest. The first time I heard the beat, I was like, "when is this beat gonna kick in." But, when I actually listened to the lyrics, I realized that the beat goes perfectly well with it. The song is pretty much about a schoolgirl that don't take no crap from anyone. It sounds like a school cheering type song. Reminiscent of "Hey Mickey (You're So Fine)." Everything about this song is ill, THE NEPTUNES did their thing on this one. ~5 Starz~

Im my opinion, we hit a speed bump with "COOL." The story of the song is good, and the way she sings is nice, but the actual song to me is boring. The production is aight. Although it's not the worst song on the CD, it's pretty close. ~2 Starz~

"BUBBLE POP ELECTRIC" is probably the most far out, experimental track off of "L.A.M.B." If I'm tellin'' you the truth, I hated this song the first, maybe eight times I heard it. Then, I don't know what happened, but everything just clicked. It could have been the fact that I didn't know what Bubble Pop Electric meant, and then I mysteriously figured it out (leave it to your imagination.) Or it could be the fact that the lyrics are so ill, but whatever it was, it worked. This song features JOHNNY VULTURE ( an alias of ANDRE 3000), the 'boyfriend' of Gwennie Gwen Gwen. The song is basically about Gwen needing some fulfillment. In this case, the fulfillment is giving Johnny all of her love in the backseat of his car at a drive-in-movie. Yes, the production and the vocals are just as wild as the concept of this song. Gwen even busts out a seductive rap in the second verse, crazy ain't it? But this time crazy = tight! ~5 Starz~

"LUXURIOUS" is an amazing song. Yeah, that's right, amazing! Why do I say amazing you say? Because, Gwen took the NOTORIOUS B.I.G.'s "Big Poppa" beat (or the ISLEY BROTHERS' "Between The Sheets" beat for all of you old people) flipped it and made it her own. That is not any easy thing to do. The vocals are great on this one, the lyrics are tight and the breakdown is ill. Her bandmate TONY KANAL produced this one and a few other tracks and believe me, he did his thing on this album. One of the highlights on the album. ~5 Starz~

Now we come to probably the weirdest song on this album, "HARAJUKU GIRLS." Okay now, your average smart a$$ would say "she should have called the whole CD 'Harajuku Girls' because that's all she talks about." But, I'm not gonna say that (even though technically I already did), even though this may be a weird topic for a song, I guess I admire the fact that she really writes about what she feels, this is a representation of that. Not a very good one though. The song is a little better than just tolerable however. I like the witty lyrics, the JIMMY JAM & TERRY LEWIS beat and the Japanese chicks sound cool. ~3.5 Starz~

Alright, I have a very interesting story about these next 4 tracks. Okay, I bought this CD the day after it came out and I just started listening to these next 4 songs about 12 days ago. I think that I just assumed that they were all rock songs, so I never bothered to listen to them, horrible mistake.

Now it's time to "CRASH!" Crash is off da hook. Check it out, in this song Gwen busts out some ghetto raps and it's very convincing, a hell of a lot more convincing than Madonna's "American Life" garbage. In an interview she described this song as SALT'N'PEPA meets BELL BIV DEVOE. But, I'm going to be so bold as to adding THE BEASTIE BOYS into that mix. The raps are fire, the vocals fit perfectly and the Tony Kanal beat is hot. Another personal favorite ~5 Starz~

Hitting another speed bump we get to "THE REAL THING." I really do not care for this song at all. It reminds me of some broke a$$ MADONNA song. There's not much to say about this train-wreck. Easily the worst song off of the LP. ~1.5 Starz~

"SERIOUS" is seriously my second favorite song off of L.A.M.B. It starts off with this tight violin-ish orchestra piece and then slams into this dance joint. It's kind of reminiscent of Madonna's "Get Into The Groove." This is definitely a strong considerable single. This song is perfect, the beat is great, the reverb is great, the ad libs are great, the vocals are great, the lyrics are great, the chorus is great, the breakdown is great, you name it, it's great! Gwen better release this song, it's too hot to be ignored. ~5 Starz~

next we get to "DANGER ZONE." This is not my favorite type of music. I'm not usually a fan of rock/pop music, but this song is really good. I like the chorus a lot. I guess this is the closest to a No Doubt song that you are going to get form this CD. So if you are a hardcore No Doubt fan, then you'll most likely like this song...Maybe. ~4 Starz~

"We've got a long way to go / when snow hits the asphalt / cold looks and bad talk come / we've got a long way to go / it's beyond Martin Luther / upgrade computer. I love this song. "LONG WAY TO GO" is very weird. It features Gwen and ANDRE 3000 singing a duet. Some of the lyrics are a little cheesy, granted. But some of the lyrics have deep meaning. Some people think that the lyrics of this song are out-dated. But I don't think so, I know that more people that one would think, still talk about interracial relationships like the're the next thing closest to hell. In fact, you would be crazy to think that many people think that way. But that's another story. This song is odd, and different, but that's what makes it so damn good. It sounds straight up like an OUTKAST song, but Gwen puts it down and makes it hers. What I really love about it is the ending, it ends with MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.'s "I Have A Dream" speech and then a horn/trumpet instrumental. The ending of that song is great for capping off the whole album. ~5 Starz~

This album is great, in my opinion it's one of the best of 2004. In fact, it's THE best pop album of 2004. The stand-out tracks are: "RICH GIRL", "HOLLABACK GIRL", "BUBBLE POP ELECTRIC", "LUXURIOUS", "CRASH", "SERIOUS" & "LONG WAY TO GO". Go and cop "LOVE. ANGEL. MUSIC. BABY." If you ain't got it, then I'm tellin'' you, you're missing out!

Overall Rating: 4.5 starz / 5 starz.

Love. Angel. Music. Baby. Poster

In her own unique way, Gwen Stefani has managed to shift our culture since coming onto the scene as the lead singer of No Doubt. With years of defining style and 30 million in record sales under her belt, she will again turn heads with this debut record that is as fresh as it is retro and as progressive as it is feel-good familiar.

With this project, she has enlisted some of the biggest names in music (Dr. Dre, Eve, The Neptunes, Andre 3000, Nellee Hooper, Dallas Austin, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Linda Perry and Tony Kanal) to create a genre bending masterpiece that is guaranteed to be one of the most talked about records of this year (2004) and beyond.

On No Doubt's great Rock Steady, Gwen Stefani was a "girl that hangs with the boys... just sippin' on chamomile." Three years and a KROQ-nerd Talk Talk cover later, she presents a solo debut that wants it all--Vivienne Westwood and John Galliano, backseat love and lifetime devotion, '70s pop throwbacks and hip-hop beats as well as Clash adoration (she continues to be managed by the firm of Rebel Waltz, named for a mournful Sandinista! cut). Among the standout tracks are the stomping, Neptunes-driven "Hollaback Girl," the tongue-in-cheek Eve/Dr. Dre collaboration "Rich Girl," and the girl-power manifesto "What You Waiting For?"; another tune, "The Real Thing," nods toward role-model Madonna's "Holiday." Though it can't match Rock Steady's inexorable track-by-track flow, Love, Angel, Music, Baby is such state-of-the-art pop that the description almost feels like damning it with faint praise. --Rickey Wright
