Free Music Review: Missing band of the decade?

As my mixed playlist drove through five ace songs from this CD once again, and as I looked up for the fiftieth time to see who was playing such nice crunchy guitars, I realized that I hadn't given much thought to where this music came from and what happened to them. Sure, as others point out, they stole everything, an entire band a song, but who doesn't? Shoot, other groups like Coldplay are pure derivative, and I have more songs off "Million" than I do "X&Y" on my playlists.
So, where did they go? Zero Wiki entry, the website is some shopping spam and Google comes up nearly empty. Mike Thrasher is apparently still in the biz as a promoter in Oregon, but still, in terms of profile vs. quality, this has to rank way up there for lack of notice. Heck, it was only 7 years ago, how could you be this solid and be gone? Ah well, past time for a reminder of how good this album was. Check it out.
Driving A Million Poster
Halfway through listening to L.A.-based Gwenmars's Driving a Million, you will have a headache. The band is often loud and crunchy, but the brain pain will actually result from the 100 times you'll smack yourself in the forehead wondering what song from alt-rock's late '80s, early-'90s heyday each track sounds exactly like. Sweetly howled Kurt Cobain-ish choruses ("Neon Tom," "Venus," "Train Song"), the fetchingly strumming romance of Echo and the Bunnymen ("She Hung the Moon"), the reverb-soaked shoegazing of a million bands that have since imploded ("Radio Gun")--the list goes on and on, but, thankfully, this is a case of imitation being the sincerest form of flattery. Driving a Million is the sexy, funky homage to the golden age of college rock that bands like Stone Temple Pilots promised, but never quite delivered. --Bob MichaelsLos Angeles trio Gwenmars latest effort is packed with solid songs filled with a sense of the frigid, synth modernism of post-punk and the apocalyptic glee of glam rock.
