Free Music Notes for Gypsy - 2008 Broadway Cast RecordingFree Music Review: Patti is an energetic Mama Rose Hit: 5 Stars
Patti Lupone's Mama Rose in Gypsy exudes determination with every note. However, Miss Lupone somehow manages to communicate the seductive femininity beneath the brassiness. In Miss Lupone's performance, one understands why those who find her overbearing and a general nuisance also find her irresistable to a point. In the final number, "Roses's Turn", we get the full force of Rose's frustration. We understand why it was vital to her that first June, then Louise go to the top of the entertainment ladder. Miss Lupone's performance is of a piece, or rather, the pieces that we have been hearing from "Some People" on fit together to give us a picture of the whole woman. It is no accident that Rose's final number, especially as delivered by Patti Lupone, becomes the most engaging in the entire, wonderful score. The other performers on the album hold up their ends nicely, and all, including the orchestra, combine to give us a powerful experience of what is perhaps Jule Styne's best score and one of Stephen Sondheim's most appropriate librettos.
Free Music Review: Bye Bye Merman!! Hit: 5 Stars
I have the Merman and Peters recordings of this show and let me tell you Patti LuPone's recording is by far the best. Merman had a very limited emotional pallette..she always sounded angry so she was only effective in a few numbers. Peters didn't have the voice but she was effective enough. Patti LuPone has the voice she has the emotions she has EVERYTHING!! She can be seductive eg. Small World. She can be borderline insane eg. Rose's Turn. She is fantastic. Laura Benanti...WOW!! You can hear her transformation from Together Wherever We Go to The Strip its fantastic!! Byd Gaines can hold his own against Rose. It's amazing!! I HATED the role of June before this recording, they were all so squeaky. Leigh Ann Larkin completely changed that. I wanted her in Act II. Her vibratto is heaven. Tony Yazbeck is agrat Tulsa. The Babies are great. the Ensemble is great!! Far surpasses the Merman Recording.
Free Music Review: LET THERE ALWAYS BE Gypsy AND PATTI LUPONE Hit: 5 Stars
As long as I have gone to broadway and Patti LuPone was some how in it, that it would be a sure fire gaurenteed hit and a great 2 hours of total enjoyment. I have seen her in everything she has done. So When I heard she was doing GYPSY I knew it was not to be missed because Patti would make history playing Rose like it was never played before..and I was RIGHT. Patti LuPone earned that Tony for ' best actress in a musical ' as she did in Evita. Her voice is untouchable and powerful where if i were sitting outside I would be able to hear her from there, I voice like hers belongs to Rose, Patti IS rose and for those 2 hours I just smiled because I have seen great theatre, so I knew I had to by the cast album and when I play it home..it's like being in the theatre once more. I can strongly suggest buying this cast album just for her alone, Patti is a total JOY..!!
Free Music Review: This will lift you out of your seat! Hit: 5 Stars
We spent big bucks to fly to NYC for the day from South Carolina to see Patti in Gypsy. We paid for premium seats, 4th row center, and we were in heaven for the better part of three hours. As LuPone emailed me in response to a congratulory letter I mailed her at the theatre, " Thank you for your wonderful letter. I'm sorry for all your toubles in the airport, but I'm glad you saw this production
with this cast. I'm a very proud member of it. Love, Patti " Our "trouble" is that weather closed the airport and we spent the night in baggage claim. But the show was the high point of our long history of theatre-going. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see the gold standard of Broadway musicals, and the CD brings that excitement home--literally! I pray that someone has the sense to capture this cast on DVD before it's too late. I'd buy it in a flash!
Free Music Review: Gypsy~ All You Need Is THIS CD!! Hit: 5 Stars
I have heard many cast recordings of Gypsy and I have to say that this CD was amazing.
Patti Lupone is really giving the performance of a life time and her songs soar right off the CD. She belts out "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and, in my opinion has the best version of "Rose's Turn" ever. Her antics in acting show on the CD through the funny, sad, and dare I say even crazy parts of the show.
Boyd Gains is pitch perfect as the lovable Herbie, matching Lupone's vocals in Small World, and bringing comedy to the part in "Mr. Goldstone" and "Together Wherever We Go."
Laura Benanti is amazing as Gypsy/Louise, her "Little Lamb" is lovely. Her transfer to Gypsy Rose Lee is great and "The Strip" is one of my favorite songs.
The entire cast is amazing, include Leigh Ann Larkin as Dainty June.
I would highly recommend this CD!
