Free Music Review: Well worth it for the amazing performances and bonus materials
Hit: 5 Stars

Patti LuPone is giving the performance of a lifetime and it is well preserved here.

Free Music Review: The War of the Roses
Hit: 4 Stars

Gypsy is without a doubt one of the two or three best musicals ever to hit Broadway. Great story and book, exciting music, and Sondheim's organic lyrics are witty, fun and move the story along. The central character of Rose has been interpreted by a host of divas including Merman, who starred in the original production, to Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters, Bette Midler (for TV), Rosalind Russell (for film) and now Patti LuPone. No doubt about it, LuPone has the voice and the guts to sing the role. I've listened to it for about a month now, but for my money, Angela Lansbury's performance beats every other one hands-down. By all means, you'll enjoy Patti for the voice and the LuPone recording is more complete. The strippers who coach Louise through "You Gotta Get a Gimmick" lack the variety and the vocal skills of those who sang in the Lansbury recording, and Zan Charisse more believably transforms from child-like, second-fiddle, ugly duckling Louise to the confident Gypsy Rose Lee. Still, the 2008 recording delivers. Boyd Gaines sings and acts well (not always the case with those who play Herbie), Laura Benanti is enjoyable and the more complete recording does justice to the score. I enjoy listening to it but always go back to the 1973 recording, sometimes back-to-back. If you have the LuPone and Lansbury versions, you need none of the others.

Free Music Review: A fine recording
Hit: 4 Stars

With such a wealth of outstanding recordings of one of the finest musicals ever to grace the stage, this recording is certainly worth ordering. Patti luPone brings her brash voice and wonderful acting to the tough role of Mama Rose and leaves an indelible mark. Another reason for owning this album is Larua Benanti. Try to make it through "Little Lamb" without shedding a tear.

But I must say that no album so far has come close to touching the orchestra of the Original Cast Album. They make the jazzy score sizzle with excitement. I think the problem with subsequent orchestras for "Gypsy" is the size - the OCR sounds like a fuller orchestra, and others sounds like the tiny pit bands. Ethel Merman's performance on "Rose's Turn" cannot be matched simply because the orchestra cooks the song to perfection, in my opinion.

In short, a wonderful new chronicle in the life of "Gypsy".

Free Music Review: Best Rose Yet?
Hit: 4 Stars

The latest contender to take on Rose, the "ultimate" woman's theatrical role, is Patti Lupone - and she's incredible. Not that her supporting cast (including Laura Benanti & Boyd Gaines) isn't terrific too, but this production is all about Patti. She certainly earned the Tony for Best Actress & may be the best Rose yet!

I have never loved the overall score for "Gypsy". It contains several great, classic songs that are among theatre's elite, but there are several songs that are simply less than satisfying for me. However, I agree it's a masterpiece & triumph for Stephen Sondheim. This cast recording is very good.

Free Music Review: Stunning!
Hit: 4 Stars

For my tastes- Patti is the best sung Rose ever! Her vicious and ruthless behaviour has been heightened to a degree i did not think was possible on a recording. Having been bitterly disappointed by the Bernadette Peters recording (I know not why..?),loving the harsh Tyne Daly version and not even ranking Bette Midler's effort, this new recording is a revelation.
Rose's Turn is so full of ferocity and frustration and Patti so much a better voice than Merman..
What is not to like about this??
